MSY Drunk Crashes Through Fences, Drives On Runway
Apparently, the druggie crashed through the perimeter fence, drove onto the active, then when confronted by airport personnel, tried to escape by crashing through the opposite fence. Insane.

What I'm trying to figure out, is what did he hit that 1) apparently brought him to a stop, 2) damaged his front end like that (I doubt a weak fence would)?
I'm guessing one of the pillars that holds up the nearby overpass, but he's really not all that close to them.
That would've had to have been one heck of a ricochet for the car to have bounced back to rest where it's shown pictured here.

My guess is that the damage was from the fences. The damage is symmetrical and more severe on the fenders. This indicates that something like chain link fence fabric wrapped around the front end in a parabola. If the car had hit a bridge pier, the damage would have been more severe at the point of impact.

The article says the perpetrator is 23. I did some pretty dumb stuff in my early 20's, and I think many of us have, but nothing even close to this. I'd imagine he will probably spend some time jail for this one...

Same reason most other USA domestic airports don't?
Though he's lucky he went out of the fence side that he did (east of the threshold of Rwy19)...
...had he crashed through the western side (near the nudie bookstore) of that perimeter fence, then he would've ended up in a 12ft deep canal, and probably not have survived.

In Louisiana the crime of hit and run driving is a misdemeanor unless death or serious bodily injury is a direct result of the accident and the driver knew or should have known that the death or serious bodily injury occurred. Hell, you could ram your sh*t into a house and drive off and, while the property damage may be a felony, your hit and run would be a misdemeanor, no matter how loaded up you are. Even a D.W.I. in the state is a misdemeanor unless it's your 3'rd offense, where the felony level kicks in.

He will most likely be charged with felony trespassing in a restricted area, the AOA (aircraft operating area), and if there was an airplane about to take-off, or land on that runway, he could also be charged with endangerment of the public.

In my mind, damaging any Detroit Iron is a mortal sin. If he'd been driving an Accord or Civic, however, it would have been a public service.

When JPSO deputies and Kenner police arrived on the scene they found the Dodge Challenger abandoned, but after a brief search of the area, the suspect was arrested near the intersection of Deleware and Veterans Memorial Blvd.
This has to be the craziest... after doing all this the guy was able to leave the scene prior to be apprehended outside of the airport.

Which indicates he probably wasn't all that f#cked up, if he had both presence of mind + motor skills to get out, run, and hide...
...which to me indicates that this was probably more of a joyride than of a dude-is-too-bombed-to-know-he's-on-a-runway type of DWI.
