Today's Eastern Airlines

Mon Aug 10, 2015 11:43 pm

How are they doing? ....and what's their plan?

I've seen them doing the Havana Air flights to Cuba and have heard they have done some charters. Seems like they might be going about their business the right way. Stay within yourself, get a plane, employ it, make some cash and go from there. Provided that it's smooth sailing, will they eventually start some domestic scheduled service? To where? It seems that they may have a foot-inside-the-door for Cuban routes when that opens up.....so maybe stick with what ya know for awhile?

What about planes? Stick with the 738? How many?

For whatever its worth, its good to see that name in the sky again

Their plan is to build up revenue via charter flights and within a year start scheduled service. They are building things slowly and carefully. Appears to be wise management running this relaunch. Second 737 is on the property and will enter service within a few weeks, and three more joining the fleet by year's end. They have 20 MRJ's on order as well as 7 (I think) more 737's.

Route system was stated to be a Miami hub with routes to Latin America and the Carribean. Though I'm sure they will serve at least some Eastern U.S. cities for feed.

What is a MRJ? EAL will be starting a one flight a week between Houston and Havana in the near future.

I'm happy that EA is making it back into business, and they certainly seem to be doing it the right way...but I must confess that I wish it was Pan Am instead.

10 orders for the 738 and 10 options on the MAX 8. Plus the MRJ order. Not too shabby for a new entrant in the airline biz.

How will they be able to compete against AA in MIA if they start scheduled service?

Pretty sure the second 737 is flying as I seen both of them at the gate together.

Eastern II is doing fine so far as far as we know. Of course we don't know their financials but so far they seem to getting a good amount of charter business. We will see if they go for scheduled ops. If charter flying makes money no reason to go beyond their niche for the time being.

Hearing rumors that the Eastern charter flights between IAH and HAV have been postponed. As the flights were supposedly starting tomorrow and the HAS website has not made any effort hype up this service as they always do with every new int'l launch, I suspect that these rumors might have some merit.

From the press release page on their website, aircraft 3 and 4 will be new build leased 738s and aircraft 5 will be a 73G set to arrive in September. The 73G will be used for sports charters, beginning with the Florida Panthers NHL team.

I think they are leasing an 737 to BW. I read where BW is leasing an American registered B737 and one of Easterns was seen flying to POS (I think it was POS)

Affirmative; the second 737 is operating on behalf of BW.

If the new Eastern is able to offer a superior product at a reasonable price, they'd be able to give AA a run for their money.

Agreed, it's a beautiful airplane. Here's the rendering in EA colors:

My friend flew the new Eastern to Havana just last week, he said the flight was completely full and that the service was good. I hope they become an AS type carrier out of MIA, they already have agreements with a number of existing operators like Havana Air and Surinam Airways.

YES! I actually tweeted to Ed Weigel about that a few weeks back; glad to see it's going forward!

Eastern is now the official airline of Univ. of Miami athletics. Interesting. Good for them.

I have to give their marketing people high props for their brand management. It seems that the fear of pitfalls from resurrecting a name following a 20 year dormancy were unfounded. Their use of social media to generate an exciting image has been well executed.
They are pushing the brand to non avgeeks who know Eastern and see them as "homegrown" Florida enterprise.
