Crew Meals In Cockpit And Severe Turbulence?
How do cockpit crew handle this if it happens suddenly, is food and drink splattered all over?

Flail our arms and scream we are all gonna die! 
Just clean it up. I try not to have much out if we are in anything more than light chop or we are in the process of avoiding weather, if I do it's a bottle of water and I always keep the cap on.

So pilots can avoid the type of turbulence that causes people to hit the celing? I thought that just happens unexpectedly.

I am not a commercial pilot, so forgive me if I am wrong, but I think it is safe to say that if pilots encounter sudden and severe turbulence, they will have much more to worry about than their "food and drink being splattered all over".

Isnt the splatter a safety concern as well? some were creating a fuss over a coffee cup sitting near the controls on a Kuwait Airways plane in another thread.

Turn around and ask the FE or LoadMaster for a barrage of napkins. Remove everything that could interfere with the safe operation of flight, leave the rest to cleaning. If it's really bad, make an entry in the log book. Finally send the FE or LM out the back to organise replacement grub. Buy him/them an extra round of landing beer once back on terra firma.

Always have paper towels up there. Bottled water should have a cap. Drinks should have lids. Keep stuff away from the center pedestal. Pass drinks from behind and to the side. If it gets really bad, put your tray on the floor behind your seat.

I am surprised this thread has gone most of the day without someone mentioning the movie "Fate is the Hunter". I guess it needed an oldie to remember it. Try to find the movie on Netflix, Amazon, or something similar. A.net people will probably like it. Without giving too much away, it is germane to this topic.

There are two things that will always create turbulence from nowhere:
- getting a cup of coffee from the flight attendand/other pilot
- opening the log book to make flight entries
Now, regarding the drinks, I try to avoid drinking or keeping liquid inside open cups when turbulence is antecipated (in or around big CBs clouds), mountain areas, etc.

Unrelated but discussed here, then what is the minimum crew on a large freight flight? Take a 747-F or 777F, I see load master and flight engineer. I take it captain and first officer as well. How are these flights staffed?
During holiday shipping seasonal rush, I used to work at LCK doing load and unload for a few 747's and I "THINK" (it was 20 years ago, give me a break) I saw a flight crew of 3 get out of one.

Same staffing as normal airlines, it may change with deadheading or pilots just jumpseatting there may also be extra crew i there are live animals on the plane.

No difference in crewing when compared to the passenger operators. Two crew, with a third if the flight time demands it.
The 747 will always be the TRUE queen of the skies!

Often pilots will hear ride reports from other pilots or request them so they know what to expect.

Neither of those planes require a flight engineer or a load master. Maybe a 3rd pilot if the flight is long enough.
