I flew into Melbourne from KL on Monday the 11th of August on EK 408, a B 777-300 ER. Just before midnight and just west of Adelaide at 37,000 ft I noticed that while we were travelling at the expected M 0.83 the ground speed was actually 1192 km/h with a tailwind of 276 km/h.
Perhaps this is not unusual - it certainly impressed me!

Mine is around 1150km/h in a 747 somewhere over Siberia travelling from LHR to NRT.

Mine is on an OZ 747 ICN-LAX doing 727 MPH over the Pacific. We were Hauling Ass and passed an A330 QUICK!

While impressive, I doubt that this is a parameter that is closely tracked enough worldwide to create an accurate repository which is necessary to comprise an official record book.

I've seen similar ground speeds also on the 777. Basically needs a strong tailwind and aircraft at upper end of cruise speed range and you're covering ground quickly.

My fastest ever flight was on a 727 from Phoenix to Detroit after the Phoenix Grand Prix. We were delayed about 3 hours in departure and the Captain was given the okay to "Put the pedal to the medal" - His words, to make up the lost time.
We were very light - less than 1/3 full and It was a maximum performance takeoff and climb and cruise, the still air distance is 1690 Miles.
We had a major tailwind over 200 miles per hour. I can't remember the exact Groundspeed but I think it was close to or just over 900 MPH, Call it about 1,550KPH. The Captain remarked on the PA that we might have set a record. We were less than 2 hours gate to gate.
The 727 has a Mach .9 max cruise speed, I don't think we went above 25,000 feet where Mach .9 is about 625 MPH.
It's all a little fuzzy as it was so long ago, but the one thing I'm positive on is the less than two hours gate to gate.

Since most modern jetliners cruise between M0.73 and M0.85 it all depends on the tailwind component. Working as an area controller on the west coast of Norway, I recall windspeeds up to 230 knots around FL300-FL350. Some westbound flights diverted to KEF/BIKF for refueling, whilst eastbounds came along at 700+ knots...

No reason it would be uncomfortable, unless they ran into turbulence at that speed.
Otherwise, at .8 or .9 Mach the superb 727 was as solid as a rock.
I know because i've flown it at those Mach numbers !

2 interesting thing I noticed,
1. Good number of records are made in the Asian region of Japan and around. (is there any geographical reason?)
2. Good number of records are done by LH/SQ pilots....does this mean, other pilots either don't record it or not interested?
