What Airline Has The Most Gates At One Airport

Fri Aug 14, 2015 12:05 am

Simple question, what airlines has "control" of the most gates at a single airport?

DL ATL
AA DFW

Just guessing, but these two airlines have a lot of gates at there largest hubs.

Those are the ones that immediately come to mind for me too. Add DL@MSP, it's almost entirely DL save for a handful of OAL gates.

Is there a UA hub that has a lot of RJ gates that might put them in the running? ORD? Been a while since I was over there.

We should also add WN@DAL!

DTW has about 120 DL gates, but the North Terminal is reasonably large (30 or so gates) so the ratio may not be what it is at the other hubs.

PD in YTZ; IIRC 9 of 10 gates are theirs, and 1 is for AC.

Would imagine some others would include
UA in DEN
EK in DXB
BA in LHR

You can't ask that question at FWA. It's been an all-CUTE airport for quite some time, with gate usage varying (in some cases, wildly) by time of day.

What the hell does FWA have to do with anything being talked about above?

I was just bringing up that no airlines control gates exclusively at FWA, unlike some other airports. The same could be said for any all-CUTE airport.

LAX also qualifies as an airport where airlines have little control over gates. Many gates and the whole TBIT are CUTE, and even the airline-dedicated terminals (1 for WN, 4 for AA, 5 for DL, and 7 for UA) don't have too much of a difference in terms of gate numbers, especially when it comes to UA vs. AA.

I'll add some other airports where one airline controls the majority of gates.
-CDG: AF
-EWR: UA
-LGA: DL
-SEA: AS
-PDX: AS
-OAK: WN (all of Terminal 2)
-STL: WN (all of Terminal 2; excludes mothballed ex-TW/AA gates)
-LAS: WN

D16 is no longer an AA gate at DFW. When the airport refurbished it to accommodate the A380 they moved AA to D6. D6 still on rare occasions will be used by OAL as was the case earlier this week when KL departed from there.

Controls would mean has the largest percentage of gates i would think. I bet fortress hubs like

AA in CLT
DL in SLC
DL in DTW
US in IAH

I bet you those are all pretty high percentages of hub carriers controlling gates. You do see some airlines using that control. Take AS in SLC they keep begging for more gate space but its hard for them to add flights when Delta pretty much controls the gates.

I did the math for Delta's main hubs.

ATL: 159/201 = 79%

DTW: 121/147 = 82%

MSP: 102/128 = 80%

SLC: 65/83 = 78%

Anybody have the numbers for AA and UA?

We should probably exclude airports without one of the US3 and those with less than 10 gates or some similar number. Otherwise it'll be very easy to find airports with only UA for example that has 3 gates and all UA. --> 100%

At 18/20 = 90% it's probably going to be one of the very highest by percentage

Interesting, and by my quick calculations, for June 2015, Delta and Delta Connection, plus AF and VS who use DL gates, accounted for approximately 77% of enplaned pax at DTW. Pretty close correlation there.

What is meant by "control" are we talking about the airlines allocating their own dedicated gates / stands?

Well, given the discussion has stayed rather USA-centric, I think thus far we've been talking about actual operational ownership via lease, given CUTE gates are the exception rather than the rule in this country.

Based on my rough DFW estimates earlier (AA with 136 gates, and 32 available for others, so 136/168), AA controls about 78.5% of the gates at DFW, which is almost identical to DL at ATL.

Quoting BMcD (Reply 18):

Actually, considering that Southwest flies to many alternative airports, it wouldn't be that surprising to see WN at the top of the list because of their presence at places like HOU and MDW.

Not really, because Terminal 2,3 and 4 gates are common-user (even if some are used by the same airlines day in day out in practice, they're under airport control). Only at Terminal 5 is gate allocation controlled by BA (or any other airline) and there are 53 numbered gates (the numbers go higher but there are gaps to allow for expansion). So plenty of examples have already been given of airlines controlling far more gates elsewhere,

Hardly, they control about 30% of gates at LHR. Even if you counted any gates they use regularly at T3 it wouldn't come close.

the ME3 at their respective hubs will have a high % of gates controlled. Same with ET at ADD. My guess is DOH and QR have the highest % out of these 4.

Are we talking about actual number
OR
Are we talking about percentage

Because if its the former, how would WN @ TPA, MDW or DAL even count?

Also, are we including regionals....because airports have separate contracts for regionals.

DL in ATL

T = 8
A = 35 ish
B = 35 ish
D = 10 ish

so that's around 88

Could this be the highest percentage of gates owned by one airline at a "primary" airport for a large city?

Definitely not EK. Dubai is a bit more difficult to figure out because so many aircraft board on remote stands, but if you combine contact positions and remote stands together for Concourses A, B & C you get to 100 positions for Emirates. This is out of 220 positions, so EK have 45% of stands. I can't figure out FZ as Terminal 2 is CUTE but I would be surprised if EK and FZ combined were much over 50-55%.

It's often forgotten but 140 airlines not called Emirates fly to DXB.

EY@AUH and QR@DOH might be safer bets.
