Equipment Failure At JFK 8/15/15?

Sat Aug 15, 2015 3:52 pm

I just checked flightaware.com for JFK flight info and noticed there is an alert saying increasing delays due to equipment failure. There don't seem to be any flights taking off but they're some arriving. Anyone have any additional information?

DC center had a major computer failure and no flights are being allowed into out of or over DC center. Lots of diversions for DCA and IAD as a result. Its created a real mess.

I'm hearing it's the entire Northeast Corridor. DC up through Jersey and NYC.

New advisories issued with specific departure routes and case-by-case exceptions for overflights and landings. Things are moving again, at least out of IAD. Perhaps the TATL arrivals will be allowed to land as scheduled.

According to the FAA map, the issue has spread as far as TPA and FLL:

And this is a pretty big hole in air traffic:

I'm going to have so much fun sitting in IAD today. Flying to LHR on BA today. Guess I'll be arriving way later unless they fix the problem very soon.

Be optimistic! You may take off and remain below 12,000 until you get to New York! You'll see some scenery.

If you're really lucky, like the last few flights that took off, you'll go on a hold before leaving DC airspace because they can't get flight data transferred! A hold after take off! That'd be a first for me. I'm almost jealous.

That would be really cool if that happened. I just want to get to London, but I'll take it as a bonus.

Not sure what you mean. But yes, I'll be flying to LHR on the BA plane that landed 15 minutes ago.

At least your plane is on the ground. They can load baggage, fuel her up and be ready for boarding as soon as the ATC issues are fixed. Would suck more if the plane had to divert and then only come in once the issue is resolved.

ZDC's airspace extends almost all the way to NYC, and it runs the arrival routes into the NYC airports from the south. So if you're going into NYC from that direction, you'll be impacted unless your flight can reroute over the ocean (as you see lots of flights doing in the picture in the OP).

Just wanted to post an update, I'm currently sitting at my gate in IAD. There are flights delayed. But at same time flights are boarding and leaving. Not sure if those flights delayed, only timeline reference I can give is the SAS flight at the gate next to me is finishing boarding right now.

I take back what I said. The SAS flight is still sitting at the gate.

Just flew MIA-LGA on DL. We were rerouted to overfly ATL, TYS, DAY and then to LGA, in order to avoid DC airspace. Total flight time was about 3 hours 20mins for what is normally a 2 hour 20min flight.

Does anyone know why DL flt # 939 was diverted to MCO when it's doing LGA > AUA yesterday (8/15) ?

My guess would be due to the route it had to take to avoid DC airspace, it may have needed fuel stop
