30 Worst Decisions You Can Make On An Airplane

Tue Aug 18, 2015 2:37 pm

I think this article is pretty spot on

Some highlights:

Bring anything on board with garlic, onions, or fish

Taking stinky food on a plane is unconscionable. Not only will your seatmates be stuck smelling it while you eat, there are aftereffects to be considered.

Bring a carryon that you cannot personally lift into the overhead bin

There is no amount of charm that makes this the right thing to do. Unless someone in your party can lift your carryon overhead, check it.

Take Ambien for the first time

Or any other medication for that matter. It’s infinitely better to tough it out through a sleepless flight than to watch your Ambien alter ego dancing naked down the aisles next week on YouTube.

What airport is that in the pic?

Along those same lines....worst decisions an Air Traffic Controller can make:

1. Never try to beat a straight-in

If you have a plane flying a 'straight-in" approach, never ever try to put the plane that's on a downwind ahead of it.

I don't see "choose to fly ryanair" on the list anywhere.

I'm normally very skeptical about those 'internet lists' (especially on Yahoo), but thruth to be told; this really should've been printed and handed out with every boarding card. I completely agree with this list. It completely baffles me what passengers are doing nowadays (as seen on the facebook page Passenger Shaming)

I had a friend whose grandmother brought a large jar of homemade fish sauce on board. Apparently she spoke little English, and security became so exasperated they let her take it on board. That would have been one hell of an awful flight if it had spilled.

Good question... maybe Macau? Also could be significantly photo-shopped.

Have a hygiene failure

Flight time is the wrong time to try a new antiperspirant, rush to the airport without a shower, or skimp on laundry. The stinkiest travelers are usually the ones coming home from long tropical vacations.

I admit I might have been guilty of that one once. I was in Darwin, Australia on the last day of a long trip around the continent. I had to check out of my hostel in the morning, but my redeye flight back to Sydney didn't leave until late that night. So to kill time I rented a bicycle and rode the nice bike path they have along the coast. For those of you who've never been to Darwin, it's a very hot, humid, tropical city. As you might imagine, I worked up quite a sweat on that bike. And I had nowhere to take a shower. At the airport I found they actually had showers in the airside part of the terminal... except my towel and all my toiletries were in my checked bag. I seriously thought about buying a souvenir towel from the gift shop, except I still had no way to obtain soap, so I decided it wasn't worth it. I did, at least, have a long enough layover at SYD that I had time to take the train into the city, have lunch, and stop at a supermarket to purchase a towel and a bar of soap. So I did manage to get a shower at SYD and was only potentially smelly on the DRW-SYD flight.

Long ago I boarded a NW 727-051 at PHX. They delayed boarding until the last minute as the outside temp was over 100 degrees and there was no air conditioning support for the aircraft. They instructed us to make a run for our seats and put away our bags so the jet could push back as quickly as possible. So I did as I was told. And then a guy sat down in the aisle across from me, opened a can of tuna and began eating it. Eating tuna in a cabin that was mostly likely over 110 degrees!

LOLOL too bad if you're sitting next to me out of YYZ, I usually grab a lox bagel (cream cheese, lox, red onion, capers, mustard) from Caplanksy's.

Great list...

I know someone who violated this rule by giving their toddler Benedryl for the first time on an ORD-Hawaii flight... worst 8 hours of his life (and maybe everyone else in the plane)... his son had the opposite reaction from the intended reaction...

I always take an Ambien on my longhaul flights USA-Asia and back. The flight used to be exciting and a novelty, but after about the 5th or 6th round-trip, I just wanted to get there, so I would go to the local clinic and get a prescription for a few Ambien pills. Works like a charm, except when the first meal is served 2 hrs after departure, and the second meal is served 5 hrs after departure (looking at you, MU!).

I don't remember ever waltzing up and down the aisles naked though (though maybe it is a good thing I don't remember!).

Keep your bare nasty feet out of the seatback pocket. Saw a lady using one as her personal foot rest. One, it's gross and two they're not meant to fold open like that. Another one, the view from the first class windows is the same as economy. Watched a guy come from economy ask the fellow in first if he could take a picture out his window and then preceeded to share his rendition of the grand canyon with the rest of the foks in first behind him.

Not entirely true. The wings/engines probably blocked the Grand Canyon from his seat hence the need to go to First Class.

But to your point about the feet - not only that but when people take off their socks and stinks up the entire place. I'm sorry, we all know it's more comfortable but if your feet stinks you need to keep them inside your footwear or wash them with some good anti-bacterial soap. Had to endure 5-hours on a VX flight from SFO-JFK and literally ran to the bathroom after docking into the gate to throw up.

Well, the take me to Cuba has only been a problem in the U.S. and that is no longer true.

I would add almost anything you encounter flying into or out of Las Vegas. People that go to that hell hole tend to be rather stupid. I has a woman next to me revving her nail color in flight, a guy in a wife beater and dork shorts down to his flip flops and I believe he had not bathed in days, and, the weirdest was a guy who got on with a pizza that I am pretty sure was 36 inches in diameter. The last one makes me wonder who was watching this idiot get on. I will do everything possible when forced to fly commercial, to avoid Las Vegas as a transit airport.

Reminds me of a flight I took to Ibiza for wedding and 2 women across from me had there legs across each other's laps. All I could think think was that if we had hit clear air turbulence they might have broken there legs and I would've been stuck listening to them scream

Which leads on to a similar heinous crime............. failure to keep quiet. No one else on the flight - neither your seat mate, nor the six other people within earshot of you, nor the flight attendants - really give a fcuk who you are, how funny you are, or how *great* you are to talk to and while away the hours with. Just sit down, shut up and speak only when spoken to.

I was about ten years old and flying CDG to MIA alone, and a man with dreadlocks sat next to me. There was no way he had showered within the last week--I can still remember the smell! Not only did he stink up the whole cabin, but he also took the window seat (which, as a plane-obsessed kid, I was not too thrilled about). Those were by far the worst ten hours I have ever spent on a plane.

The guy might've been sitting directly over the wing in economy and therefore would have had a much inferior view out of his window?

i'm inclined to say that pax may be in violation of FAA safety regulations ... can't imagine how the other pax can deplane within the regulation time in an emergency when a pax blocks the aisle like that

I understand that, but there are plenty of windows to choose from before and after the wing before you even hit first class. It's not like the windows are bigger up there.

Agree, also no seat belt extention would even fit that bulk.
