At the point when the reporter is demonstrating the shades, you can see that he is occupying quite a bit of the space of the empty seat next to him. I cant imagine just how tight and horrible it must be 9 abreast in this for any length of time

I wont argue with you on that. You go on right ahead and enjoy sitting next to someone like him in such a space.
I normally try to have a window seat, but on this configuration, I could only ever think about an aisle seat. Imagine 12 hours sat in the middle of 3 in this space, one adult male on either side!

WTF! Are you serious? This aircraft is just about to start service to the flying public - CBC doesnt send journalists to review old aircraft!
New aircraft, new operator, so "old, very tired argument"? Come on, even a USA sense of humour doesn't stretch that far!
Maybe the biggest laugh is that the joke is actually 100% correct, and that this 787 9-across is just a horrible travelling experience!

This 787 9-abreast (or 777 10-abreast) debate engenders a ridiculous amount of complaining from A.nuts and has done so for quite some time now. Like LongHauler said, a large majority of 787s in the sky today feature 9-across in Y and this isn't changing anytime soon.
Go ahead and search other 787 threads that mention seat plans and you'll find this rather trite and unoriginal complaint all over the place.

I'm confused about this talk about the plane entering into service shortly. I flew on an AC 787 to Copenhagen a month ago. FWIW, the economy seating was fine.

Look on the bright side - with so much of the public choosing not to fly the 787 in Economy (per A.net Law), those that do choose the 787 will have entire rows to themselves!
It truly will be a dream ride from a comfort level.
