Porter New Seasonal Service To Melbourne (USA)

Wed Aug 26, 2015 8:31 pm

Florida Today is reporting a new, not yet named, airline will be starting flights to MLB on a 70 seat aircraft. Start with seasonal service.

http://www.floridatoday.com/story/mo...airline-coming-melbourne/32336721/

MLB facebook page hasn't reported anything, neither has their website.

http://mlbair.com/

Well, certainly no one from Europe, that's for sure. Paradise to Paradise ? (from the Carribean?) Could be a Canadian airline? My bet is with the later....

Cheers,

70 seats narrows it down...

Bahamasair ATR72
or
Air Canada Express CRJ705 or EMB175

Could be Porter Q400 maaaybe but that's a looooong flight for a q400... unless its a tag like YTZ-MYR-MLB?

I can't think of another foreign airline with 70 seaters in that range of MLB?

From the article

"The carrier doesn't currently service the state, and Melbourne International would be its gateway into Florida.
The carrier is proposing, initially, non-stop, weekly international service from — an unknown destination — on a 70-seat aircraft. The arrangement is seasonal for now but could grow more frequent, and with larger aircraft, as the flights mature at Melbourne International."

seasonal, Non stop and weekly service, currently not serving the state would eliminate Bahamasair and Air Canada. Makes me think it could be Porter, but it is an awfully long flight on a Q400

Says nonstop weekly international service and that this would be the carrier's first destination in Florida.

So no AC. Don't really have a clue.

I too think it sounds like Porter. It would be a nice addition to their seasonal flights down south.

Maybe a charter operation using Elite? They recently received a crj-700 and were already flying out of MLB. Just a thought.

I have a feeling it's Porter...but what about the possibility of Canadian North/FirstAir sending a combie from YOW? I'm not so sure about south bound freight but I'm sure they could fill 2 pallets north bound.

Anyhow, good for MLB. Be good to hear who it actually is, but fun guessing along the way!

My bet is that its Porter but I do agree. One long flight on a Q400.

http://www.gcmap.com/mapui?P=YYZ-MLB&MS=wls&DU=mi

1000+ miles is long. If its Porter, you'd think they would've picked MCO over MLB.

Horizon runs PDX-TUS with the DHC-8 and that is nearly 1200 miles so it is quite within range. And really, why would a person choose any other aircraft over it? Sure it's a bit noisier than a 737, but unless one is a prima donna, the unobstructed view and the whirly things on the wing are great.

Oh wait, the flying public is a bunch of whiners, never mind.

QX doesn't run PDX-TUS. SkyWest does/did. Whenever you see a Horizon Q400 PDX-TUS, it's going down for a maintenance C Check.

If you saw it on FlightAware or FlightRadar24 or whatever flight tracker, that was just a ferry flight for the C Check. The flights were operated by SkyWest CR7's.

OK. Let me try to make it very clear. I did not see it on flightaware or Flightradar or any other database. I saw it out of my office window. And yes indeed, it used to be a daily flight from PDX to TUS operated by Horizon with a DHC-8-400. I was so used to seeing it that I no longer noticed it's absence.

Good grief, nobody believes anything.

Oh, BTW, the SkyWest CRJ service appears to have lasted a very short time.

If I remember right, AC had intended to start YYZ-DAB on a CRJ in the 2002-2003 timeframe but it never launched. I don't know about MLB, but I see a fair number of Canadian license plates (mostly Quebec and Ontario, but other provinces as well) in and around Daytona.

Only 25 minutes longer than AC and WS jets YYZ-MCO which is almost the same distance.

YTZ-MLB 932 nm
YYZ-MCO 917nm

Personally I would rather spend the extra 25 minutes with no risk of a middle seat and free beer/wine/snacks on Porter.

Sold as YTZ-MLB non-stop, but most likely will operate YTZ-YHM-MLB. Numbers just don't add up to be able to operate from a 4000FT runway with 75 Pax. My guess they will hop over to YHM for a quick gas and go.

My guess is they'll do the same thing as they do on the MYR flying and cap it at about 55/60 pax.

Not to mention the shorter commute time to/from YTZ for the M4-M6 crowd.

Wonder if it will be capacity constrained due to the YTZ runway length? Or not an issue in winter months for that distance?

I'm just curious as to how Porter will make a profit on this route using only Q400's and capping the number of seats; mainly because the economics of flying the Q400 only work until a certain point.

To be honest, they should've waited for their CS100's to come online before doing these types of hauls; as they can do YTZ-MLB more efficiently on the basis of CASM and payload.

Could they be taking a page of WS book (YHZ - DUB/GLA) and testing the market before they are really able to jump into it. Might also assist with their case (assuming they can sell out the flight) that there needs to be a longer runway for their increasing demand?? Just guessing really, but if it works then hey ho...all good right?

That is a super gnarly flight for a Q400. 3h10 minutes - yeesh.

Was just reading the wiki for MLB and noticed that Embraer is building a facility close to the airport - is this flight potentially targeting biz flying in the aerospace sector as well?

From the Toronto Star: "...The airline plans to serve a maximum of 50 passengers on a flight, instead of the usual 74 on this Florida route, due to fuel and range considerations. Previously, the farthest Porter had flown is South Carolina.“We constantly get asked to serve Florida. We can start doing it to a limited degree with this route and meet some of this demand now,” said Porter spokesman Brad Cicero, adding Bombardier’s CS100 jets are needed for longer routes. "

Surprised they didn't go for YTZ-DAB. It's a little bit shorter and gives you the same market. I would also argue that DAB is probably better known than MLB, though I'm not sure if that is true for Canadians.

Or they could give YTZ-PNS or YTZ-ECP a try...they're both a bit shorter than YTZ-MLB! And yes, I'm being facetious.

I was under the impression that Canadian North wasn't coming back next year.

IIRC the 5T flying was for the Celebrity Cruises contract. It was flown with a full pax aircraft, and it was often subbed out for a 7F aircraft. Would imagine that the floor space is much better utilized with butts in seats than to send a combi. I'm sure FX would end up being much more cost effective than whatever 5T or 7F could do on that route.

I had thought this contract continued into this winter...You're reply is the first I've heard otherwise.

That's because its winter and de-ice and taxi out will take longer in YYZ than YTZ. Add in the longer taxi time at MCO as well, and an easy 40 minutes of that block time on YYZ-MCO could be spend on the ground.

Comparing flight times would be more accurate if you want to compare the speed of an A319 to that of a Q400.

Block times out of busy airports in the middle of winter are misleading. Airlines usually give themselves a bigger buffer compared to the same route on a summer sked.

Will Porter be selling all the seats on the way back to YTZ? Wouldn't make much sense to cap it going both ways? I don't know much about MLB but I would assume it has a nice runway with enough room for the q400 to make the trip back north unrestricted?
