WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares what is for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...It does NOT compare to last year or now (UNLESS OTHERWISE STATED).
HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5 JAN 4>5 ; means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. No other months were changed. I only list one direction, although it is possible the listed change is only one way. It is too difficult to average the two directions. I assume the change is roundtrip and that is most often the case.
HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month.
WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. In most cases flights are rounded, but in the case of international service or markets with low frequency, fractions are shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.
WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
Most airlines publish schedules 11 months in advance. This report covers the next 9 months. That avoids seeing schedules as they are loaded. Several LCCs load their schedules less than 9 months into the future. I remove the schedule adds if I see them and show a year over year (YOY) comparison if I notice them.
THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE SKYWEST
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.
THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.
THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard. This causes flights to not appear.
CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.
I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

These are worth keeping an eye on as they've disappeared/reappeared a time or two before. They are at-risk flying (AX I believe) and perhaps that leads to the occasional oddity.
If I'm not mistaken these mirror similar cuts loaded for winter-spring 2015 (some of which were reversed). I get that the dead of winter is a trough, of course, and that some markets don't really recover until mid-spring. But in an era of cheap oil and a solid business economy seasonal cuts like these in routes which seemingly should have solid business demand make me grimace a bit.

I'm guessing AVL at a minimum is permanent. Some of these were cut before and then reversed.

There's a lot of LAX cuts this winter -- peak-day departures appear to be around 140, the lowest since at least the 1990s, and that's not considering CO. It'll be interesting to see how much is restored come spring (what's loaded now isn't reliable).

That's the direction. UA said over the weekend that they were going to address chronic delays in their new schedule. Sounds like an excellent excuse to drop a lot of chaff.

It was deleted for the entire period I retrieve which makes it appear permanent, but it's possible it resumes for just deep Summer I guess. That seems unlikely to me.

Go back and read the thread from when this same type of cut was published for this past winter. Similar comments were made. Personally, I agree with you and still think it's pretty remarkable that United doesn't find it economically feasible to operate even a single daily flight in such a large, high-profile, and historically-United-friendly market as LAX-BOS. I get it that it's the absolute doldrums of winter when much business demand and virtually all leisure demand falls off a cliff, but still, I find it incredible that AA, Delta, JetBlue and Virgin - three of which have only been in this market for a decade or less, compared to United which has been in it for multiple decades - can manage one if not multiple daily flights during this same period. Really goes to show how radically things have changed at LAX since the late 1990s/early 2000s.

These changes have been telegraphed - and the proverbial "writing on the wall" - for any who have been paying attention in these weekly threads over the last 12-24 months. It is clearly obvious that while LAX is still a large and very important market for United - and I suspect always will be - United is steadily extricating itself from LAX as a "hub," and instead optimizing and tailoring its operation there to be as relevant as possible for the massive O&D demand to and from SoCal. Personally, I stand by my prediction from months ago that within a few years we may well see United settle at around 100-120 peak day departures from LAX to its hubs plus select important destinations - both domestic (like BOS, MCO, SAN, LAS, Hawaii, etc.) and international (LHR, TYO, SYD, MEL, etc.) - with substantial local O&D and connecting demand.

In the summer UA are two daily so I'm really curious to see if they just end up dropping the route with NK and AS launching daily flights in September. This is incredibly disappointing. 1 weekly in January!? They've always been daily on this route and WN just has the one daily flight to OAK. If it doesn't make money than by all means it should go but it's sad to see UA floundering at BWI at the moment and they are dangerously close to falling to single digit departures in January including express flights. AA and DL are both above 20 daily departures even in January.

Agree 100%. I also think some of the long, thin domestic mainline trips (IAD-SMF, SFO-PIT etc) that could only muster 1 flight per day are better off being served through a hub. Having 4-5 connecting flight options throughout the day has got to be more convenient for a majority of travelers that need a more flexible schedule.
By taking the ERJs out of the system, it's possible to run the same, or even more seats through the system by using slightly larger planes and still use up less airspace/gates at the congested hubs. This makes the hubs more efficient, less delay-prone and allows the carriers to improve their schedule reliability. Win-win.

UA has been whittling away at service to HSV for quite a while now. I'll be surprised if this route returns.
I think we are one daily to DEN, less than daily to IAD, and 2-3 daily to IAH.

That's a tough sell, fewer options is never more convenient for the customer. Why would folks not want IAD-SMF in addition to the connecting flights instead of just the connecting flights? Why would folks in Iowa and Oklahoma not want the option to take a non-stop to EWR, even on a smaller plane, rather than being forced to connect?
These routes may not have performed well and dropping them may be perfectly sensible, but let's not pretend it's better for the customer not having the service.

I should have explained myself better. I didn't mean to simply take a flight away and not replace it with anything. I would rather see the hubs utilized better by the smaller markets as opposed to sporadic hub service and a single, token, long, thin non-stop overflying a hub.
I'm from one of those "Smallville" markets and know all to well about limited flight options. Assume a certain number of passengers need to fly from airport ABC and it takes 6 planes to accommodate them. If the choice was to offer 4 flights to ORD, 1 to EWR and 1 to IAD or 6 flights, all to ORD, with multiple connection options to EWR and IAD throughout the day, I would prefer the 6 options...maybe that's just me.

This example would make more sense to me if the option was 4x ORD, 1x EWR, 1x IAD vs. 8x ORD; in that scenario, there are more departures and potentially more schedule options. Otherwise, I'd still rather have five connecting opportunities to EWR and IAD with one non-stop available rather than just six connecting opportunities.
Regardless, at least in this update, the reductions are not shown to coincide with a schedule increase to the other hubs for those markets. So OKC (et al) didn't gain an ORD flight at the expense of EWR, it just lost an ORD flight. There may or may not be upgauging to negate the capacity reduction, but it certainly doesn't give customers more options.

I think the 4th is some sort of glitch tied to Leap Year. I've seen it pop up in some other airlines filings. It doesn't appear to be a problem in my code as I allow for the 29th day AND it only appears on some routes. So, no idea, but I'm pretty sure it is just going to 3x.

EWR to DSM and OKC have been discontinued before (I am more certain that DSM was gone before, also kind of certain OKC was discontinued also). I did not know that they were even brought back.

Regardless of the glitch, this route has changed quite a lot from 5 years ago, when WN dominated and B6 just had a few JFK flights at JAX.

They are AX. The fact that PIT-RDU--the third at risk AX route--did not show up in the report suggests to me that this is a filing error. The operation is small enough that it probably has to stay or go as a unit.

The TUL and OKC flights are not surprising to me. Both cities are extremely oil price dependent. With oil down in the toilets, the Oklahoma economy is rapidly collapsing. Incomes are essentially slashed in half. I'm sure this is already showing up wirh leisure travel. Don't think there is a lot of business opportunity between DC and NYC and these cities. Maybe a dozen seats a day. The rest is leisure. I occasionally route my employees on the OKC-EWR flight for connections to Europe. Most of the time it's through IAD or ORD.
Road back on an A319 IAH-OKC this afternoon. I make this trip frequently on a Sunday. I've never see the plane so empty. I don't think there were 75 pax on board. I'm sure it's coincidental but I'm fully prepared to see massive cuts in both markets. I feel for Alaska. Afraid they're too late to the game for their Sea flight.
United seems to be building the DEN hub up some more. Maybe it has to do with the new airport contract? I've seen quite a few adds there and the OKC-DEN market is almost all mainline these days with fairly full flights. While Den is a great connecting city for anywhere west of here, it doesn't work too well heading east. Houston is great for anything south including LatAm but it's also pretty crappy for anything north and east. Then again most of the market north and east is leisure so frequency isn't important. I wonder if airlines are using the same scheduling software and it has some sort of Leap Year glitch. It's also possible it's my program code, but I don't see how since my code says if 2016 then 29 days and it only appears sporadically which would seem to establish it isn't my code.

Agree.... However internal memos show these are being dropped. By January there will be no routes from PIT to non AA hubs, minus BOS for now.

I just checked aa.com for Monday, January 25. PIT-STL/BDL are gone; PIT-RDU remains. But, AX has crewed this operation from STL for as long as it has existed IIRC, so I don't see how AX can operate PIT-RDU without PIT-STL. I see no other AX flights into PIT or RDU on that date.
FWIW, I think PIT-STL has potential for 1-2x WN service (similar to PIT-BNA), and PIT-RDU can probably work with 2-3x 50-seaters operated for AA or DL. I don't see anyone else entering PIT-BDL.
I can't decide whether I miss the tulip or the bowling shoe more

We've seen something similar once or twice before -- it's definitely possible these three at-risk PIT routes could be ending, but I think it's just as likely they will show up again within a week or two, omitted accidentally (and temporarily) due to their particular nature.
If indeed PIT-STL and PIT-BDL end the best shot for PIT-BDL is OneJet. WN is the obvious choice for St Louis -- one wonders if the presence of PIT-BNA will complicate that as both BNA and STL could serve similar westbound flows out of PIT. Maybe PIT-STL wouldn't be an originator westbound the way PIT-BNA is.

I think both could work with complementary schedules (one morning and the other evening); that maximizes the connecting utility of both flights.

It's curious that UA is suspending it for most of the ski season, considering that there's some amount of ski traffic to AVL (or maybe just UA's way of dragging people out to the Colorado Rockies

I'm not sure why anyone in the NYC region would go to AVL for skiing. The skiing in Vermont is far better and far closer for NYC residents. And if you want really good skiing, you'll go out West as you mentioned.

Maybe it's me, but since I don't really see this as a leisure route, operating it for 75 days in the Summer only seems like nothing. Technically it's still continuing, but effectively it's gone if you are a regular traveler in this market.
