Canjet Suspending All Flights; Folding Down?

Tue Sep 01, 2015 6:24 pm

As reported by Radio-Canada and Les Affaires, the company suspended all flights as of today. The news seems to be out in French only.

Suspending all operations indefinitely. Here is it in English. Not sure it is much of a surprise. CanJet was talked about as a potential provider of lift for Canada Jetlines but nothing was arranged:

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-s.../canjet-halifax-shutdown-1.3211240

According to the report, it only had one aircraft left in its fleet.

In proportion to the population, Canada must have more defunct airlines than almost any other country.

Not surprising after they laid off most of their people in May.

That's too bad, I was hoping they could re-invent themselves...again. I always had a good experience with C6 and hope the staff can land elsewhere soon.

Wikipedia names just under 200 defunct United Kingdom airlines. It also names approaching 500 defunct United States airlines:

In fairness, quite a lot of the airlines on these lists have merged or changed identities, which is not quite the same as going t!ts up.
None shall pass!!!!

Do they own any of their 737s?

Is this the second time that CanJet has had to go out and reinvent itself as an airline? Was their second chance not based upon the TS work....they could potentially struggle quite a bit with a Canadian economy in the tank and the lucrative oil patch work likely to be incredibly quiet this year given the price of oil.

This article says they own 1, now to be leased to Air Transat

All the failed airlines don't seem to frighten at all the people behind Canada Jetlines, Jetnaked or New Leaf.

Sorry, another Brit that just could not take a joke.    ...Anyway, the U.S. population and aviation industry are just a little bigger than Britain's, when I last checked...

No fear for any start-up! The market needs at least one other game changer. A real low-fare carrier. Unfortunately there is not much choice for secondary airports or adequate airfields, but still there is a gap in a certain niche market.

How many "game changers" does one market need though?

Low fares are low yields, and a carrier needs to be able to find some kind of natural market without having to keep stimulating a market endlessly with sale fares. Even carriers like FR are now looking at trying to appeal to business pax and flying into major airports to generate higher fare levels.

Canada suffers from the same issue as Australia, which is vast distances but limited density and major cities to service. Its not a great recipe for success.

At the end of the day, secondary markets don't pay the bills, and there is a need to be part of the major markets, which are dominated by the existing carriers.

Exactly!

A buddy of mine just texted me in anger that his Greek vacation was cancelled due to Sky Greece's shut down. He blames Air Canada because Rouge's fares were too high, and wouldn't fly Transat because it was too uncomfortable! (Both airlines clearly satisfying Customer needs as they near 100% LFs this summer!)

I no longer have any sympathy for people chasing the lowest possible fare when they get stranded. Reliability/trip completion rates are in the public domain.
Just because I stopped arguing, doesn't mean I think you are right. It just means I gave up!

You can't have everything for very little. Everything comes with a price, but too many people tend to forget that. He could have tried TS Club Class, which is not that much more money to be spent.

We know that, being airline enthusiasts, but most people just buy by price. I agree ... I think Premium Rouge and Transat Club are tremendous value.

But ... to me ... placing all your vacation dollars and risking a vacation on an airline that had only completed 4 flights is pretty risky. Like buying a parachute at Walmart, or finding the cheapest brain surgeon!
