Passenger numbers up a smidgen of 5% in August to 2.69 million. The moving annual total is now 22.74 million terminal passengers (22.83 million with transit). This financial year it's up 3.9% - bear in mind that there was just 1.3% extra seats available this summer so it indicates aircraft are getting fuller.

Freight is now back above the 100,000 ton mark for the moving annual total which is a healthy 6% increase. August was up nearly 11%.

With LH about to operate a new weekly LAX-MAN-FRA service with DHL meant to begin a 5 weekly service to Leipzig, things are looking bright again on the cargo front.

I never really understand CFG operating ex MAN, is it just to provide extra capacity for TCX, or are they operating as an independent with a growing route network from MAN?

Performance and capacity in the main however remember that TCX and CFG are effectively the same company in the back office these days.

On the long haul Manchester flights carry the CFG code and offer connections via Lufthansa and Flybe going West.
From Munich and Frankfurt the Thai flights also carry the TCX code

What are the chances of Royal Air Maroc starting flights to MAN? Morocco is a very popular destination for Brits. I know there are a few low-cost/charter airlines who fly from MAN to Morocco, but is there a market for a legacy carrier to fly perhaps to Marrakesh?

What happened to a direct China flight? I thought Hainan wished to start. Is the visa requirement an issue?

Also, does anyone know why TG don't operate to MAN. Why wouldn't it work? They can carry passengers through BKK to other Far East destinations and also Australasia. Or has EK, TK, QR, SQ & EY taken up this this market fully? Personally I'd rather stop in BKK than DXB, DOH or AUH if I was off to Sydney, there's much more to see & do if you take a one or two day rest stop.

regarding flights to China - it might have a thing to do with lack of slots at PEK. as I read in the "China daily Newspaper" today in my office in Beijing (which comes free to our office each day) is an interesting story on page 5.

"Work set to begin soon on Beijing airport's 4th runway"

Beijing Capital International Airport, the busiest in China, will soon start building a new runway to help ease the heavy burden on existing facilities and improve flight punctuality, airport managers said.

The airport's current three runways handle about 1,600 flights each day, which is more than their intended capacity and has resulted in less time for maintenance, according to Luo Liang, head of the airport's planning and development department.

http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/cndy/2015-09/15/content_21853085.htm

basically its a long story - but the bit that I spotted was it wants to have direct links to both Dublin and Manchester but the 4th runway won't be ready till 2018. so that gives us a time frame to work with.

Thai International is a major loss marker on the long haul, can't even make money out of Heathrow !

And the Brits don't go to the coast in the numbers that the Scandinavian do where they deploy the 77W.

Really from their own bottom line staying away from Manchester is probably a positive move. BTW Bangkok as a rule has pretty poor up front yields for many carriers.

As for the Chinese issues it really is down to politics and its' the Mandarins in Whitehall stopping regional services with anti Chinese policies (Visa issues) and other rhetoric with a very restrictive bilateral still in place.

The August provisional passenger statistics are out. I think we should merely reflect on one route:

CX had an astonishing 95% load in August.

Seriously, this should actually be worthy of a separate thread on how the ME3 do not poach passengers; I wonder how many passenger CX is actually turning away. The expansion of the route cannot come quickly enough and now we must have some doubts whether going daily A350 will be better than being a daily 77W. The other thing is that CX have substituted the lower density 77W with F class on a few occasions which may give a very slight indication that there are people paying in sufficient numbers for a more premium heavy aircraft to be needed.

For many I expect a non-stop service will beat one with a stop-over and if people are continuing from HKG with CX it may be cheaper anyway. The poaching may be the other way if people prefer the bright lights of Hong Kong to those in Dubai.

Probably impossible to judge, but how many are not flying CX from LHR since the MAN service started?

When I was going from MAN to HKG in Aug last minute on a standby ticket I looked at CX and stood no chance of getting on. Flew with TK in the end (got upgraded on the way out and it was amazing - so definitely a good choice!).

I didn't know that they were looking to change it to A350, whilst that'd be a nice sight - I think the 77W may be working better. Maybe A350 for Winter schedule & 77W in Summer would make sense.

That's a good question but I'm not about to fork out some dosh to get the detailed report! LHR saw passenger numbers drop by 2,500 passengers. We had 11,650 passengers. Most of the "connector" hubs had increases as well so it may have just increased the overall market.

Also re Thai, if you're *A you have the option of quite a few one stops going east, so only direct to Bangkok would have an advantage over transferring with SQ*, SK, LH etc for all but regional Thai destinations.

* Yes SQ routes through MUC but then their product and hub airport are IMO brilliant. Plus they have been flying out of MAN quite some time with an excellent reputation.

Not sure if this route is to be seasonal or year round.

Also, Loganair aircraft have taken over from the Flybe Q400s on MAN-INV.

According to the raisin site, MAN and LGW are swapping A380s from the 27th March with the 2 class version going to LGW with the 3 class version coming back here. I can't envisage EK deciding that having 100 fewer seats at MAN is going to be very good idea so let's speculate that either EK21/22 will become A380 or EK23/24 will be announced. The 25th anniversary of EK's arrival into MAN may well be a suitable occasion to do it.

MAN has also appointed on the Head of Businss at the MEN Media to be head of the External Affairs which may see an enhanced profile in the media.

Norwegian is also displaying this message when attempting to book MAN-BOS "Selected route is for sale from 14. May 2016. See first available days below." so either they have a website glitch or we have another long-haul route!

Yep, he's flying as we/re the last stop on his state visit as it's been reported as going back to Beijing from MAN.. Should be a 747 but don't know the times. The only places noted he's visiting are the Graphene Institute, civic lunch at the Town Hall, dinner at Manchester City then the airport bit so imagine we're talking 8pm/9pm departure. For the arrival, I reckon would be simpler to come up on the Thursday night.

Turkish Airlines started their evening MAN flight TK1491/TK1492 with a 737-700, now it appears that they are operating it mostly with 737-800, 737-900 & A321 with the new cabins (with the proper business class seats & PTV's with AVOD) which are also being operated on their other two daily flights.

Hints of an announcement in Business Desk Northwest

"In the afternoon, the President and Madame Peng, accompanied by the Prime Minister, will attend an event at Manchester Airport, where there could be an annoucement regarding direct flights to the Chinese mainland - a prospect that has been in the pipeline for many months. "

One thing having Tom, Dick and Harry saying announcement imminent but when you get serious news organisations saying it....

Confirmed as flying up from London on Thursday night.

Hi all.

I see MS have stopped the MAN - CAI service for the winter, again.

Is there any indication, from load factors, etc., as to whether they'll be back next year?

Having experienced the, first ever, lost luggage incident, when combining LH & MS via FRA; despite the boost such a trip gives to your FFP mileage, I'd much prefer to take the direct option, if it's available.

Thanks in advance for any info, or thoughts, that can be provided.

MS carrying roughly 4,000 passengers per month (around 50% to 60% loads). It's the bilateral that someone in the Foreign Office seems to bin when it comes to sorting it out as they are always late in the day in getting the route available for sale.

Shame about the load factors, as on the occasions I've managed to fly the route it's always been pretty packed in Y & reasonably well populated in J. Still, I guess with the current, rather unfortunate, downturn in the tourist trade, I guess 50% - 60% loads on the route aren't to be sniffed at.

If it takes as long to sort out the renewal as it did this year, I might have to start flying via IST, with TK (sadly there seem to be no Star code shares with MS at the moment) & MS, despite TK having a less generous luggage allowance on international routes, & the need to stop overnight at IST, on the outbound, if you want to arrive in CAI at a decent time of day.

Cheers for that info.

On those occasions where I've been able to fly the service they've actually been rather good.

Fine, they're not in the EK or SQ league at the moment but on the last few flights, even their domestic services on Express, it's been possible to see that effort is being made (such as proper crockery, cutlery & glasses in domestic J & fairly good food on their international services, ex-Europe),

The direct MAN. - CAI routing qalso has the advantage of no, "Oh my God, it's early, wake up, followed by a long spell of killing time at a connecting airport.

Well fingers crossed for CA and a nice 787 which will start joining the fleet next year, but it will be interesting to see where the slots come from at PEK ? (with 3 runways) its super fall, it makes LHR a joke.

Hainan are short on aircraft for long haul markets at the moment - current orders are for 3 x A330-300's and 30 x 787-9's - unsure of delivery dates. They have just started PRG and announced TLV to the network, so not sure if MAN will appear.

but fares would be interesting sometimes on CX via HKG you can pick up flights for as low as GBP 450 RTN!

just have to wait and see now.....tick tick tick.

The UK said they had been authorised but MAN is one of the routes deemed by the CAAC for expansion to by Air China from 2008ish. The route shop gives these for demand to mainland China in 2011: Beijing 89,000, Guangzhou 18,500, Shanghai 75,000. 182,000 passengers should be more than enough for a 4 or 5 weekly A330 non-stop service to PEK with the connections to PVG + CAN.

Routes to be revealed with the expectation of an HU 787 on the ground

"an anonymous source with Hainan Airlines, which operates under parent company HNA, told the Global Times that the company will unveil new flight routes from China to the UK during Xi's visit."

Stating "routes" implies more than Beijing to be revealed so Shanghai may well also be on the agenda for services!
