EK Receives 150th 777

Thu Sep 03, 2015 9:28 am

With 150 777s in the fleet EK is the biggest operator of the type.

Quote:
American airframer Boeing and Emirates Airline today celebrated the airlines 150th Boeing 777 delivery. The airline took simultaneous delivery of three 777s – two 777-300ERs and one 777 Freighter which marked the entry of the 150th 777 into Emirates’ fleet. The two 777-300ER’s are registered A6-EPA and A6-EPB while the 777F is A6-EFS.

It's not that long ago that SQ's 77th 777 was a big deal: http://boeing.mediaroom.com/2009-01-...ers-77th-777-to-Singapore-Airlines

Do all the Emirates birds ferry PAE-DXB for further outfitting, or do they go right into service?

Any chance they do PAE-SEA-DXB, with the SEA-DXB being a revenue flight?

The 77W, of which EK has 106, has a very good combination of payload (including freight capacity - quite a bit higher than the 380), range, and relatively low costs.

Wow, 150 777s? That's really something.

Does that number include the retired -200s, or is it the number currently in service?

Airfleets shows 144 currently in service + 3 stored. Add in the three recent deliveries and you end up with 150.

From Boeing's press release:

Quote:
EVERETT, Wash., Sept. 3, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing [NYSE:BA] and Emirates Airline today celebrated the simultaneous delivery of three 777s – two 777-300ERs and one 777 Freighter – marking the entry of the 150th 777 into Emirates' fleet.

Today's delivery marks the first time in 15 years that Boeing has delivered three 777s at one time to a single customer.

And most worry about EK's 65+ plus A380s.  http://m.atwonline.com/airframes/emi...-a380-retires-boeing-777-200-fleet

I expect retirements to accelerate for EK. In 2005 I didn't expect their RJ to be the 77W.

What is amazing is that EK has an aircraft shortage. Although some of that is due to them embracing airline low margins and rotating out aircraft in a very non-emotional and pure numbers oriented fashion.

And they haven't yet finished concourse D...

It is amusing that the 772s have been replaced with 77Ws that will be replaced by 779s...

The question is will any 77Ws be replaced by newer 77Ws?

Quoting VC10er (Reply 8):

The 77W is today's modern combi with good passenger economics but excellent passenger with freight economics. On EK's long routes, it carries 360 3-class passengers and a little freight. On shorter flights (which includes Europe), the 77Ws are volumed out with cargo too.

It isn't just EK. Almost half of 777 orders have been the 77Ws. Now, there have been more -200 length, but that was due to a sales head start.

Quoting tortugamon (Reply 20):

Only 196 to go... Doesn't seem so intimidating as it once did!

I'd like to see all 150 frames in one picture!

I know this is ridiculous, pardon me, I'm just trying to kill a little time . But say EK did have 150 spare 777 frames sitting around. They could clear a spot in the desert, fly them out to it, and then take the photo(s). Impossible, but it would sure match the unprecedented scale of the Burj Kalifa!

Err, not quite.
They have recevied 150 777, but only have 147 in fleet. Some have been retired.

' The additional three Boeing aircraft marks the 150th Emirates Boeing 777 delivery milestone, and takes the current Emirates 777 fleet size to 147'
Nothing seems as good since the VC10.

EK's last non-ER 777-200 ferried to MZJ (with fuel stop BOS) for scrapping last month (July 14). Not quite 19 years old, delivered October 1996.

Related EK video:

And delivery of EK's 100th 77W last November. They've added a few more since then.

It defies all comprehension. I readily admit I was one of the naysayers in the early days of A.net last century regarding EK. Maurice, Clark, the Emirs in the background doubling down on Dubai..really have to say hats off to the lot of them. They took advantage of what turned out to be the exact perfect geographic location given aircraft capacity and range, and untapped demand from secondary cities around the world that no one else could see..and turned it into a global juggernaut of a business.

240 large widebodies in day to day operation, simply unbelievable. I'll fly them someday soon I hope.

Without doubt the most successful wide body jet ever. The 300ER/200LR pioneered very large twin engined aircraft capabilities so successfully that it killed the A345/6 and Boeings own 747 not to mention severely limiting the success of A380. Love them or loathe them the airlines love their ruthless efficiency and capability. Even Lufthansa can't resist no more with there 779X order and no doubt how would Qantas be if they had 77L and 77W in their fleet.
The a332/333 are very good aircraft but short on range for true long haul. The A345/6 had the legs but were slaughtered by the 777 and to this day it is one of the most surprising thrashings dished out in the business world in a two horse race truly remarkable .The success of the 300ER did cause Airbus problems in where to position A350 which is probably why Emirates cancelled 70 A350. As for the rest of the industry it things expand in the future then the 779X will be the new 77W of choice and sell very well.
Congratulations to EK on their giant fleet of 777s. They realized a long time ago just how good they are.
