DL 744 Flying ATL-MSP-ATL X2 On 11/29!

Mon Sep 07, 2015 3:44 am

Delta will bring the 747-400 back to ATL-MSP this year on the Sunday after Thanksgiving. This is a great opportunity to fly on the 747 domestically and probably one of the last chances to fly DL's domestically.

Flights are bookable:

DL2610 ATL-MSP DEP 0725 ARR 0853 EQP 744
DL744 MSP-ATL DEP 1005 ARR 1327 EQP 744
DL2276 ATL-MSP DEP 1455 ARR 1633 EQP 744
DL1549 MSP-ATL DEP 1740 ARR 2110 EQP 744

It's also possible we'll see a DTW-ATL-DTW subbed to the 744 in order to position the airplane to ATL. That will be clear about a week out. It could also be NRT-ATL-NRT.

Thanks for the info! Another great opportunity is SFO-ORD (and back) on UA. They're using a 744 Nov. 28/29/30!

Unfortunately those timings make it impossible to catch it, but that's still awesome. Is Delta doing this for extra needed capacity, or is it just one of those kind of things?

If Delta is retiring these planes by 2017, hopefully they'll do at least once more.

The 744 is operating MSP-ATL on 28Nov as flight 1108 320p-640p, and it will operate out of ATL on 30Nov as flight 784 0835a-1009a, after it completes it's Sunday missions

Does it have anything to do with the Atlanta Falcons playing the Minnesota Vikings on 11/29?

This is smart scheduling. International travel demand is low on thanksgiving weekend. Domestic demand is high. Moving international capacity to busy domestic routes will help. Any airline can fill any domestic flight on the Sunday after thanksgiving.
If you have never designed an airplane part before, let the real designers do the work!

More likely its the only large capacity they have available to move around for those specific flights expected holiday loads.

Thanks for the heads-up! Definitely will be trying to take this trip. I've previously only flown on CA's B744-Combi, upper deck. Nice to take another airline's B744 for sure.

I'm sure the Falcons/Vikings are helping but travel demand between the two largest domestic hubs on the Sunday after Thanksgiving is essentially endless. It's also a way for Delta to let their former Northwest employees visit family in MSP and get back to ATL for Monday morning work. That's a HUGE non-rev travel day and it's important to support the employees.

Delta has been great with adjusting capacity during peak travel times. I wonder if they will run more eastbound redeyes from SLC again like they have in the past.

This is a little more than last year, maybe due to the football game. There's also a MSP-ATL run on the afternoon of the 28th and a ATL-MSP return on the morning of the 30th. Not sure yet how the plane will get into position to and from MSP. Unfortunately it might just be a ferry.

The added flights on the 28th and 30th may be because of that. Last year the flight originated in ATL. This year it appears to originate in MSP.

I doubt this has much, if anything, to do with supporting employees. It's about maximizing revenue on a busy travel day. Like a normal flight there wasn't much non-rev room on them last year. One of them I was on was completely full.

Looks like there are some other domestic widebody segments showing up as well- I'm looking tentatively at flying ATL-SLC on the 29th, and DL1802 is currently showing a 777-200LR.

Not only is it a huge non-rev day, it's also a big employees on positive space and purchased tickets day. LOTS of people heading to see family in MSP.

More seats = more space for non-revs and employees buying tickets on the busiest day of the year.

It's certainly not only for the employees but it's a consideration.

I can't wait ... booked on 29NOV ORF-DTW (717) then DTW-MSP (757) then MSP-ATL (747) in Seat 1A on all segments, then the next day the first runs ATL-MSP (747) in 1A and MSP-ATL (77K - top deck) --- then a few days in Atlanta and back to Norfolk later in the week. Thank you for posting this, I've lusted after flying on a Delta 747 since the early 1970s and I'd see them at ATL (I grew up in Atlanta and have lived in Norfolk the past 25 years)

Booked on Flight 2610 to MSP and Flight 744 (how appropriate!) back on a reward ticket. I figure this might be my only chance to catch a 747 in my life. I just had to jump on it, especially after missing it last year. Thank God for SkyMiles making that trip significantly cheaper.

Hey if y'all are on either flight and near row 25 stop and say hi!
Careful, doors are closing, and will not reopen. Please wait for the next train.

MSP-ATL (77K - top deck)

This is an outstanding seat with TONS of room. I was in 77K on ATL-AMS this summer. See my trip report if interested.

Depending on my schedule, I might jumpseat on one of those legs. That would be real neat!
