Flybe Dash 8-Q400 - SOU To PMI & ALC

Wed Sep 09, 2015 5:11 pm

I have noticed over the last couple of months, BE have been operating the Q400 on routes from SOU to PMI & ALC.

Although obviously it's capable; however, this must be a shock to passengers and rather uncomfortable.

I know generally the routes are operated by E jets , but guessing poor load factors are pushing them to use the Q400

Your thoughts?

The E-jets were restricted to something like 80 pax out of SOU, plus fares weren't that cheap so I don't think loads were great. Also FR and THO were operating 738's to PMI & ALC from BOH less than 30 miles down the road.

I guess it was Q400 or axe the routes. I quite like those A/C and have used them quite a bit mostly on the DUB-SOU runs to connect to the cruise ships. Obviously a lot less of a block time but still if it means keeping a route then I guess its worth it.

I'm a big Q400 fan and find them very comfortable, but these are long routes and their speed does't really show on such.

I've taken a few Q400 flights on sectors just over 1hr. I've never found them any less comfortable than larger jets, plus I like the 2x2 config, more so than 3x3 on bigger A&B jets. What is it that others find them to be less comfortable? Speed?

I certainly wouldn't be put off by Q400 flights on such sectors of around 2 hours, but then I'm a plane geek that loves props

Why would loads be restricted on a 2.5 hour flight?? They are both well in range of the 195s

I reckon this is more to do with the slow removal of leased 195s from the BE fleet and them progressing towards a full non-jet fleet, as they've been meaning to do for some time now as part of the turnaround programme.

Q400s are used on several sectors up to about 2 hrs. 40 min. in Canada.

I assumed this was something to do with the airport and runway performance, rather than payload range of the aircraft.

They're not progressing to full non-jet... they're progressing to DH4 and E75!

The loads were not restricted at all, many flights to AGP, ALC, FAO and PMI were operated full with 118 passengers. Currently the Wednesday PMI is on the DH4, the ALC was on the DH4 a couple of times in the winter. The reason for this is Flybe are intending making SOU an all DH4 base from November so they are trialling how these routes will work on the DH4.

Just my .02 cents, I fly the "Q" every 3 weeks over the Rockies for a 2 hour flight from YLW to YMM, and while it is generally a relatively comfortable aircraft as a passenger to fly on, but I've found that its more prone to turbulence as its service ceiling is only 25 000ft which limits its potential to climb above it.

I flew with them to PMI from SOU back in the late 2000s and the E195 was full.

Great flight from my local airport!
