787 ANA Scrapped? Tucson, AZ

Sat Sep 12, 2015 3:40 pm

Hello,

I am on the Amtrak Sunset Limited train and went by the Tuscon, AZ bone yard and saw a ANA 787 sitting there. Have they already scrapped one?

Thanks for answering.

That would be ZA002 - the second produced frame - which was donated to the Pima Air & Space Museum.

Thank you Stitch!

I found it odd seeing it there already. That is one hefty donation!

I am assuming this was donated by Boeing & not ANA. If so, why was it ever painted in ANA colors? Was ANA ever designated to receive this aircraft?

Yes.

Yes, but it was NTU (Not Taken Up) and they received a later-build frame in replacement.

Wasn't it just painted in ANA colors for publicity, launch airline and all that ?

Well it was originally suppose to be ANA's plane, but publicity no doubt played somewhat of a role as to why it was it was painted in ANA's livery and not Boeing's house livery. NW's first 787, a test aircraft (forgot which one), was also going to be painted in the customer's livery. Unfortunately DL merged with NW and deferred the order before anything more than the rudder was painted.

Only ZA001 was meant to have the Boeing House Colors. As Polot noted, ZA002 was painted in ANA colors and ZA003 and ZA004 would have been painted in NW colors with ZA005 and ZA006 in the colors of Royal Air Maroc, as I recall. Pictures of the production line during the initial assembly of ZA001-ZA004 show the NW birds with a red rudder, for example.

Why is that unfortunate? Delta saved themselves the pain of operating early build dogs and preserved their ability to acquire later aircraft more suited to their needs, assuming they want 787s at all.

Unfortunate in the sense that we never got to see a 787 in NW's livery.

That makes more sense; I can see spotters would be disappointed while Delta management would just be relieved.

When I made my post, I notified the mod's thru the 'Suggest Deletion" option as well. I've never emailed them but thanx for the suggestion.

Sorry all for the nit-pick but seeing TUS spelled that way is like fingernails on a chalkboard for me!

In any case, I'm glad it got taken care of. Thanks to the mod's.

Was painted during flight testing in ANA colors. It was one of the flight test frames they never planned to go to an airline. It was built as a test frame ith wary build parts so boing donated one and scrapped or VCV bone yarded I believe 2 others that were in Boeing colors.

Here is a video of the test aircraft number 2 during runway tests at LYR ( Longyearbyen, Svalbard ) in Norway. Boeing used the aircraft to trst the runway for possible future emergency landings:

The aircraft is in ANA colors abd ius proabably the same that is now being heading to the Pima Air & Space Museum.

I think the airframe is so out of production spec that it has essentially a zero market value.

Many years ago I was driving through AZ with fiends and one girl spotted a miles-to sign referencing the city and asked "Are we going to go through Tuck-sun?"

It was very much intended to go to an airline, namely NH. Boing intended to deliver every 787, however, with the amount of re-work and change incorporation the first three frames needed, the paperwork was a nightmare so no airline would accept them. So Boeing wrote them off and donated them to museums once they were done with them.

The first and up to now only time I've been inside a 787 was at a museum (ZA003 at the Museum of Flight). Which I find rather bizarre for a new aircraft.
