I had been hearing many rumors of WS starting a YWG-Europe route. Even if it's only one flight weekly I hope to see it succeed as I'll probably be using it some day. Also I'm curious to see how AC will answer to that particular route.

I think westjet is smart to get in there on there to london where they can steal and stimulate demand.

Rogue, icelandair, and WOW are showing the LCC model can work across the atlantic.

Is there enough capacity for all of this expansion from Canada to UK? AC Rouge recently announced YYZ-LGW to complement its YYZ-LHR flights. With BA also flying that route and TS on YYZ-LGW, it seems like a lot of extra capacity on YYZ-LON anyway. The other routes are a good addition though, shake things up between BA & AC

...and might explain why we're seeing offers as low as $1,400USD roundtrip J offerings on Canada-London, as of late. Flyertalk is awash with them.

It's long been a known fact that USAmericans can get better premium-cabin deals by positioning in Canada, but lately some of them have been cheaper by a factor of x5!  Wow! Seeing trips that cost $8,000+ originating in the USA, selling for under $1,700 in Canada. It's crazy!

How long some of these routes last is always the big question. However for the time being it will be nice to see a little bit of competition on these routes.

Why are there so many holiday TATL flights between Canada and Europe? I guess Canadians travel more than Americans, and that there are some large communities of Eastern Europeans in Toronto or French in Quebec, but... is the market that big?

Well I would like to see some numbers. I see often those adds in the metro in Paris or London with pictures of Alberta or wherever in Canada selling you some holiday package... but still that is a very niche market for Europeans compared to the US (New York, Florida, Chicago, California...). It is not like Europeans are flocking to Toronto for holidays.

Well I would like to see some numbers.

A huge amount of Britons go to Canada on holiday and also to see relatives. This is partly why, for example, Air Transat (and previously Zoom) serves various regional UK cities from Canada on a low-frequency basis, and why WestJet flies Toronto-Halifax-Glasgow.

While not showing you what you want, in terms of traffic figures for UK-Canada-UK see page 86: http://www.caa.co.uk/docs/80/airport...tl_Air_Pax_Route_Analysis_2014.pdf

You can assume almost all those from LGW are travelling for tourism/visiting friends and relatives reasons and a good amount of those from LHR.

Finally some love for YWG! It's only once per week, but a bold move nonetheless. It'll be interesting to see how (or if) AC responds. Congratulations to Westjet on the expansion to the UK!

US bound tourists are spread over much more gateways whereas tourists to Canada go to Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver and nowadays Edmonton. Moreover, I reckon more charters will be going to Sanford/Orlando from the UK then the number of flights to Toronto from the UK

Based on the schedules published by the OP, it looks like the aircraft could be doing a lot of W flights, ie. YYZ-LGW-YEG-LGW-YYZ-LGW-YYC. Since flights from YYC, YEG and YYZ equate to twice daily to LGW, I guess the aircraft flying from and to YWG will not be part of these W flights.

WestJet is certainly finding uses for its new 767 with daily from both Vancouver and Toronto to London. Calgary gets 5 times weekly 767 flights too. These are only summer time flights.

YUL does have limited demand to the UK. But if we talk about CDG, you'll have no problem filling the plane.

Disappointed it's only 1 weekly from YWG and 2 weekly from YEG. Seems to me they could have made these 3 weekly each, to give each route a fighting chance.

The bloodbath on YYZ-London and YYC-London will be nice to watch. Hope this doesn't push BA to exit YYC

I think 2 weekly on YEG-LGW is not enough to push AC out of YEG-LHR. They should hold their ground on that front !

Flights operations to LGW will require three aircraft and WS will have four. Since the official announcement is for tomorrow, will probably know more about the intend use of that fourth.

My guess, the fourth aircraft will be used on domestic trunk routes,ie, YYZ-YYC YYZ-YVR. It's possible that they could on certain days of the week fly south,no clue what destinations would warrant that much capacity.

I am going to second that opinion, with its schedule built around giving it the maximum operational flexibility to fill in for any of the LGW flights from either YYZ, YYC, or YVR (ie it would have ground time in YYZ / YYC / YVR near departure times for those flights so that it could fill it. The B737 schedules would then be built to allow them to swap in for it).

Anyone know how B767 flying is going for WS so far? Eagerly awaiting trip reports!

Hi! How is life? As a Maritime Resident of the Province of New Brunswick, as I see and read through the posts here, no flights from YHZ, this is sad, because Westjet used Halifax to test London Gatwick I think and reading the fligths possible, non from Halifax with the new 767-300s, if it is the case, it is very sad for the Atlantic Provinces and especially for the Population with a very deep routed British Culture at Halifax and its Regions and Nova Scotia as a whole and Southern New Brunswick and PEI and Newfoundland. I hope and pray that Westjet will think things over concerning the Maritime.
With my budget now I can not go to London but if my life improve in the near future I would love to go to YHZ to take a flight at London Gatwick or Heathrow. Aviation passengers in the Maritime from my point of view we are the forgotten one most of the time. Yes I know the Economy in the Maritime is not the best, here in New Brunswick We are fringing on bankruptcy, but not there yet and the Government are trying hard to not have that happen, but still People continues to travel in this Region(s). I am very happy for those Who will have a flight near Your regions though, I hope and pray You will enjoy them and cherish them and not take them as granted. I am still a very very very BIG fan of Westjet. I Love You all at Westjet. I respect all of You here too. Take good care and have super day and be careful everywhere.

It would be a bit of overkill for WS to use a widebody a/c on this route considering AC uses the 763 to LHR. I really don't think there is enough demand in YHZ to justify two 763 a/c flying from YHZ to London.
Also, don't forget, AC has a rather extensive cargo network, something WS doesn't have at this time. AC uses this advantage on the YHZ-LHR route, and most time they probably make more profit from cargo than they do from pax.

For now. I think things will change dramatically for them in the next few years, especially with the introduction of the 763 and new international routes. Bear in mind, the pilots narrowly turned down being unionized recently. I think the next time this comes up, it might go the other way.

AC operated YWG-LHR years ago once or twice a week with DC-8s and then L-1011s. CP also operated YWG-AMS with similar frequency with both 747-200 and DC-10-30. Both AC and CP flights were stops on flights to/from YVR. I flew on an AC DC-8-63 YVR-YWG-LHR sometime in the early 1970s and YVR-YWG-AMS on a CP 747-200 a few years later.

Going back further to the mid-1950s, AC's (then TCA) first direct (same aircraft) western Canada-LHR service was a once-weekly L-1049G Super Constellation that operated YVR-YWG-YQX-LHR. It was referred as the Hudson Bay Route although it didn't get very close to Hudson Bay.

"Low cost" in LCC refers to the airline's costs, not the fares charged. Any airline will always charge as much as the market will bear. They'd be crazy not to.

Rouge, not Rogue.

Many people on this forum call it Rogue. It's become a thing. Just saying.

So far? It hasn't started yet. First domestic flying has been pushed back several times, now not beginning until next week.

According to Flightaware WestJet is already flying between Calgary and Toronto daily

Still sitting outside the WJ hangar with plastic over the engines. Visible to anyone driving up Barlow Trail to the airport here in YYC.

My guess, the fourth aircraft will be used on domestic trunk routes,ie, YYZ-YYC YYZ-YVR. It's possible that they could on certain days of the week fly south,no clue what destinations would warrant that much capacity.

What about a spare in case one needs to be taken out of service?

eff 06MAY16 Vancouver – London Gatwick 6 weekly
WS022 YVR1750 – 1124+1LGW 76W x6
WS023 LGW1255 – 1540YVR 76W x6 (eff 08MAY16)

This could prove to be very lucrative for me, with BA bringing in their A380 to YVR May 1st and then WS starting just a few days later ... 2 possible inaugural flights in one week

In this day and age,not too many airlines intentionally have non-operating spares as it expensive and lost opportunity. If anything, flying the fourth on the domestic trunk routes comes close,as it could be pulled offline/positioned and substituted with one of the more than 100 narrow-bodies in the event of prolonged mechanical or disrupted schedule.

Well, given that the hard product is still as "going rogue" crappy as it was three years ago, it's still apropos.

now, it's just...equally as apt a nickname. The passage of time does not dull the contempt many current and former AC passengers hold for the Rouge spinoff. The use of the brand name as an unflattering verb ("aww no, my most common route just got Rouged") is still used widely within the flying community and also unlikely to disappear, no matter how cute it may or may not be.
The nice thing about a mistake is the pleasure it gives others.

Speaking of AC/RV, it will be interesting to see if Rouge will retaliate, say by launching its own YWG-LGW service. Wouldn't put it past them.
us Air Traffic Controllers have a good record, we haven't left one up there yet !!

Then why is Rouge so successful if nobody wants to fly on it? I don't have any data but I expect load factors on Rouge flights are probably higher than AC mainline.

Right you are. Load factors are in the high 90s, as one would expect with that type of operation.

It's third year in, and Rouge is a tremendous success. It just goes to show you, the average a-netter should not be running an airline.

Makes sense. Thanks for the reply, I appreciate it
