Quoting SonomaFlyer (Reply 49):
Anyone have a clue about what the price difference would be to have the heavy maintenance performed on the wide bodies in the U.S.? If you factor in the cost to fly the a/c round trip to HKG or XMN, the lost revenue due to the longer ferries etc, the cost difference might not be that big.

What kills heavy maintenance in the US is manhour cost when labor is about 75% of the cost of a check to begin with.

For instance a heavy check on the 744 can be between 26,000 to 40,000 manhours, so if you get labor rates that are $10-20 cheaper overseas it adds up to large sums.

As reference when United in 2005 agreed to send its 777 fleet to China, it said it expected $30mil annual savings.

The ship sailed almost 2-decades ago on this topic as US operators found the business case of going overseas compelling. Even much of the US narrowbody fleet leaves the country to places like El Salvador, Costa Rica, Mexico etc.

How many used A319/320's did United acquire?

When will all them be delivered?

Last, I read the Airbus' are getting the NEW (and very nice I might add) First class seat. Are they going on the new (used Airbus') and is the entire single aisle fleet (except for p.s. 757's) being fitted with these new F class seats?

Thanks

There was mention early on in the thread about the 777's operating to HNL will be retrofitted with lie flat in Business First. Has this been confirmed and if so any idea when this may begin and finish? Going to HNL next summer so just curious what might greet us on board.

I'd imagine the new-to-fleet A319s get the new seats. The aircraft have to get refit with something. There's already a line or two doing new F installs. May as well use 'em.

I doubt two cabin large regional jets will get 'em as they just got new F seats when the slimlines were installed. The press release said some 737s and 757s – I'd read that to mean "not all."

Sounds like the non-DirecTV aircraft will get the new seats...UA hasn't said anything about UAX or DirecTV equipped aircraft at this point. I would bet that they will at the very minimum get the new seat covers/bulkheads ect.

Any aircraft with Koito or pre-merger UA seats will be reconfigured. Presumably the newer BE Aerospace seats that debuted on the 737-900ER at CO will stick around for a while longer, and possibly be re-covered.

Apologies if I mention this too often, or that I haven't read this entire thread or if someone has answered me and I missed it!

Any news about the new UNITED INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS FIRST SEAT? The one that select GS members tried out?

I am very anxious for United to do 3 things: First is get a new, all aisle access BF seat, second is EWR to GIG non-stop and 3rd renovate the lounges that matter most (EWR, IAD, IAH). Any insights or news on any of these topics would be very much enjoyed!

Thanks all,

ERJ-145 Trans States (11/20) (841/842/843/844/845/846/847HK UA Blue, 812HK,825HK Trans States House)
CRJ-700 SkyWest (69/70) (760SK UA Blue)

List is a bit less than two months old so they may have painted these...everything else is in merger colors or house livery.

Unless that sole remaining CR7 was repainted recently, that's correct. I have the below on the last few ERJs (unless they've also been recently painted and/or not photographed)...
N842HK Blue
N843HK Blue
N844HK Blue
N846HK Blue
N847HK Blue
N812HK House
N811HK House
N825HK House

Given how they've been retiring some of these, I wouldn't be surprised if they don't see new paint.

Pardon me for maybe being the only one who might not know this, but what is the ultimate configuration they are trying to get to? The slimline seats with seatback monitors that will accept a USB cable rather than the awkwardly positioned rub-up-against-your-neighbor-while-trying-to-plug-in under-seat plugs? I really dislike the DirectTV option. Maybe I can be pointed to link somewhere?

I am sure this has been answered on this thread somewhere so forgive me for being lazy, I don't look at this thread as much as I used to... but why don't the new A320 interiors include power ports? I love the new streaming video to your own device but I recently flew SEA-ORD on an A320 and burned through my entire battery in less than half the flight...

Very odd ... since from the information I have, N62892 is slated to be used for a special Veterans Day delivery flight on Wed. 11 Nov.

UA has selected employees who have served in the U.S. military to fly to SEA on 10 Nov, where they'll enjoy various activities including a tour of the Renton factory and Museum of Flight, and then fly to ORD on the 11th at 0930 on a/c 892.

Is it possible that induction could take three weeks?

It will be inducted, then fly to INT for the wifi/ scimitar work. If that's completed early it will sit there until time to send it back to BFI for the 'delivery flight' to ORD. This has been done at least one time before for some event.

Thank you for this thread.

Must say I am not a major fan of the wifi. Used it once and was not happy with the inconsistent service considering the price. I have gone back to carrying my entertainment external hard drive with me that contains all my movies. Will be traveling a lot in the upcoming next few months. Looks like I had better add more movies.

Used it once and was not happy with the inconsistent service considering the price. I have gone back to carrying my entertainment external hard drive

PDE is free and I have only had two instances of trouble with it (no sound once, and freezing movies another) on several dozen flights with the system installed. It's not a perfect sample size but pretty reliable in my book.

The wifi, on the other hand, can be spotty, but is improving lately.

An important thing about the WiFi is that there are three different systems in place. While a customer shouldn't have to pay attention to this, it might be worth paying attention to whether you're having trouble on GoGo, Panasonic, or Thales WiFi and choosing flights accordingly. Also good to raise the issue in post-fight survey emails with as much detail as possible so the WiFi + PDE team can better identify and address issues.

I hope you were not trying to stream videos off Netflix or something in-flight...the system isn't designed for that. It's really just for checking emails or surfing the web....

No I recall them specifically stating the wifi is not meant to support streaming video.

used the PDE once and had problems...so i figured from now on I would simply bring my own and not have to rely on the program functioning like it is meant to function.

Good article on United's progress toward unifying WiFi and PDE experience:

Sheds a little light on how folks can have such wildly different opinions of United WiFi.

so here's a corrected version:

Thank you for providing that, clears up a lot of confusion for me.

It is nice to see that after a lot of different products being offered and things quickly changing in the IFE arena that some consistency is starting to form and soon we will have more consistent IFE options across UA.

Is there a long-term plan to retire the DirecTV and go all WiFi/PDE for the domestic fleet? I hope... I assume UA has a contract with DirecTV and that will expire at some point?

738:
N27246 entered INT 10/21/15 conversion GUM to domestic
N37298 exited HOU 2139/22Oct, enroute GUM operation in new config.
N73299 entered HOU 2138/20Oct for conversion from domestic to GUM. Last of 7 738s to get GUM configuration.
Would expect 1 of three remaining old GUM configuration aircraft to exit GUM as N37298 goes into revenue service.

739:
N37466 entered INT 2129/20Oct, expect slimline installation

After 3rd Quarter revenue call, following changes to Feet Plan
744 - no change - 1 remaining fleet removal in 2015
752 - no change - 7 more fleet exits in 2015, remaining 4 in 2016
789 - no change -3 more in 2015, last 5 by June 2016
737 - no change - last 2015 unit delivered, reamining 2 deliveries in 2016
CRJ7 - no retirements in 2015
ERJ145 - now total of 44 to leave in 2015. 201 at end of year, so 7 more to exit in 2015.
Q400 - 20 remaining end of 2015, all retired in 2016
CRJ2 - no change - 50 at year end 2015, not including 23 Skywest on pro-rate agreements with UA

I know nothing about this particular contract but usually LiveTV owns the hardware on the aircraft. If the contract goes, I imagine LiveTV gets their hardware back.

Nothing on this fleet update...would assume that we will see them pop up on the Q1 fleet plan. The last thing that I saw on here was 1 late 2016 delivery and 9 in 2017.

Live TV does own the equipment, pays for the install and keeps most of the revenue generated. No one has ever posted on here what the length of the contract with DTV is....could be life of the aircraft for all we know.
I know the voices in my head aren't real but sometimes their ideas are just awesome!!!

Could be for work related to final 756 cockpit configuration. I believe a few PS 757s and at least 1 763 are completed and being flown now in the final combined 756 configuration and fleet.
