First Plane Touches Down On St Helena

Wed Sep 16, 2015 10:29 am

The end of an era as St Helena receives its first flight at its new airport. A Beechcraft King Air 200 flew from Cape Town making various stops along the way before finally landing at Prosperous Bay Airport.

Comair of South Africa will have a scheduled flight fro Cape Town from Feb 2016 reducing the journey time from five days to about 4.5 hours.

How long is the runway on St. Helena and what kind of equipment will Comair be flying?

Never mind - - I got my answer! 737's and A319's will be commercially operated according to Wiki. Not a very long runway though! Less than 5,000 feet!

Will be quite weight-restricted of course.

It is too late for him.   But this airport was long over due, though being only reachable by ship makes the island something special. I have seen a beautiful trip report about someone visiting St Helena.

They only have 737-800 so those will be used.

I would love to visit. See Longwood house. Check out if the wall paper had arsenic in it. Decide which of the three hotels to stay in. Buy some stamps. Listen to Radio St Helena. See if I can spot the mysterious Manatee of Helena.

The short runway would make the trip even more exciting.

I wonder if this will affect the ship service.

Yes it will. Part of the agreement for the funding of the airport was that the RMS St. Helena, the only ship that makes regular runs to the island, would be retired.

I've been to St. Helena twice and it's a fascinating place to visit.

All the big stuff will still need to come by boat for a while.
I guess the airport fire engines and things came by sea.
Imagine "white goods" building materials etc would come by boat and food stuffs and medical come by plane.
Good luck to them, has been a while coming, how is their internet service?

Imagine the patience the residents have when trying to get anything... no Amazon next day deliveries...car parts probably take months...

So right, but then if that is how they have grown up they expect nothing more, makes you realise how lucky us main landers are.

Don't know, maybe they are the lucky one's. Think,no impulsive and fleeting consumer purchases. That will change as online shopping and delivery will be quicker once parcels can be shipped by air.

Does this have the potential (facilities, runway length, etc) to become a diversionary airport and change any current ETOPS routings?

But St. Helena would seem great for Pitcairn Islanders who have a 40 hour boat ride to anywhere!

For an aircraft like an A330 or 777, I don't think the runway length would allow it. Technically you may be able to land and takeoff, but not legally.

On an island only 10 miles by 5 miles across, I'd be surprised if there were a lot of cars down there. Just getting gas could be a headache, though I guess they're gonna need gas a lot more from now on

Congrats to HLE. The world just a little smaller. Just wondering if someone might start HLE-LAD which is 600 mi. closer than CPT.

Based on the document provided by United787 at reply 21, the runway will be extended to 1,850 m, 6,069 ft, so eventually, once the runway is fully extended, a B738/A320 shouldn't have too many problems on a 1700 nm hop to CPT.

This extension of the runway will only be as TORA, no LDA. The LDA will seem to remain at 1,550 m. Page 6 of the document.

Only a 6000 ft runway, lack of passenger handling capacity and ramp space (only 2 aircraft at once), lack of hotels, lack of aircraft maintenance and fuel. All of this tells me St Helena airport will not be an alternate for ETOPS flights.
