Yes one to avoid. I am struggling to understand the difference in terms of on board service between Iberia Express and Vueling - is it just that MAD is IB [and hence IBX] territory whilst Vueling focuses on BCN?

Vueling actually offers a better product - 30" seats.

Having flown both - Vueling is definitely the better of the two in Economy at least.

People moan about IBX but I have done a good few flights with them on sectors over 2 hours and find them fine.

They have a good J product too. Great crew , comfortable aircraft , introducing free wifi entertainment system. Decent BOB and full OW benefits. Those are just some of the differences.

From a branding standpoint it is also confusing. IB express offers worse pitch than VY but uses IB branding. Really no commercial sense in having 2 brands and a sub-brand - is it a union or workforce thing? You'd think IB = business-oriented, more-premium product and VY = LCC, unbundled fares, leisure-oriented.

VY was surprisingly fine on my only flight with them. I though the BOB was a good value and the upgraded fare including luggage and a seat near the front was still quite reasonable.

Will there be a BA codeshare on these flights?

They could rebrand IBX something like Vueling Express... but definetly the brand is not very welcome, as travellers think about the pitch when they hear IBX

VY do offer some connections on through tickets both on their own flights and codeshares. Its a bit confusing at times.

If you mean these then I find them fine for European flights. Of course its down to personal opinion but I have done 4 hour flights in them and they were acceptable.

And Norwegian started MAD-BHX last season. Unless I am mistaken, those were the first scheduled flights between MAD and BHX ever and now two carriers on the route. In any case this is part of a larger trend; as the Spanish economy recovers, MAD is thr fastest growing large airport in Europe and Madrid is increasingly becoming a tourist destination by itself, competition in thinner routes in exploding. For instance, Hamburg has gone from 1 to 4 carriers, and Warsaw from 1 to 3 in about two years.

Utterly mistaken

Iberia, and BMIBaby previously served the route for sure.

Also think BA and Monarch might have tried as well.

Incorrect. You can connect from Vueling to Vueling across the network.

I'm moving to Birmingham tomorrow so maybe I'll take advantage of it at some point! Those seats pictured below look almost the same as the EZY seat I sat on on one of their new A320's.

On board service is not too different. Though I2 offers a "Business" fare which includes meals and lounge access. No vacant middle seat AFAIK.
I2 does differ from VY operationally. You can connect IB-I2 so I2 helps feed IB's long haul at MAD. IB-VY connections are not offered.
And you're right about MAD being IB/I2 turf - VY only flies to MAD from their bases. There's no VY aircraft based at MAD, I believe due to labour agreements.

They both actually offer exactly the same seat pitch. A320 180 cabin config and all new Vueling A320 deliveries with 186Y. Whether or not the space feels the same will probably depend on the actual seat manufacturer used and of course personal preference. Eventually each fleet will be standardised with the same seat but for now its a bit of a mish mash.

Quoting threeifbyair (Reply 6):

Iberia Express was formed to lower costs within the work force that Iberia mainline wouldn't agree to. i.e. Lower flight and cabin crew wages and increased hours. Evertthing else onboard is exactly the same.
It is similar to what happened at BA in that newer crew couldn't be integrated with the legacy crew so instead set up a separate fleet. Luckily there though the operation stays the same and no separated branding was needed.

Both airlines offer connections, both via their hubs and with their codeshare partners. Vueling has an ever increasing list of codeshare destinations with British Airways for example
