VS Jet Wing Clips Blast Fence At JFK

Sat Sep 19, 2015 4:19 pm

A Virgin Atlantic flight VS26 from JFK to London apparently clips a blast fence on push back. Sept 19 am

Luckily not too bad, but maybe more damage on closer inspection.

With recent dinks like this one the Alaska/United one the other day may they need to install parking sensors and rear parking camera on modern aircraft .
In sure a little bleep bleep alerts as the pilots pull in or out of gates won't hurt

Does anyone know the registration please?

G-VBUG operated the inbound flight VS25 last night and hasn't flown since, so I think it's a safe bet to say that it's the aircraft involved.

Obviously they need to look into another way of ensuring aircraft don't hit other objects because these mistakes seem to happen fairly often now. How airlines could allow aircraft to be pushed around on the ground without every extremity of the aircraft carefully being watched by someone and has the ability to directly communicate with the person moving the aircraft is beyond me. I mean, if this was happening how would it be possible to push a huge aircraft into a huge stationary object?? Or is what I mentioned already standard policy and the quality of some of these employees that low to where mistakes like this continue to happen?

I'm about 90% certain that those planes can have 1 winglet deferred. They just remove it altogether and send her on her way. I can't imagine why only 1, but whatever.

A340-600, likely G-VBUG as above.

Whenever I moved aircraft there were always a brake man and guys on the wing tips apart from when moving on the taxiways when we dispensed with wing men. Are the airlines trying to save money by not having wingmen when in close proximity to obstacles? If so it isnlt working. A mistake such as this must cost $1M when you consider the cost of hotels for passengers etc. Surely its cheaper to have to people watching the wings?

ANyone know how many times this has happened recently?

Id say its more hiring as cheap a crew as possible to do ground handling so stockholders make more money. You get what you pay for.

I wouldn't be so sure that it isn't too bad. There's a lot of potential damage to the underside portion of the wing. Based on being a paid member of a.net and having a basic understanding of airliners and blast fences from having seen them at work, I am going to put it out there and say that this aircraft is likely to be a write off and will end up being sent to its grave in short order.

Who handles VS at JFK? Is their procedure to have two wing-walkers or just one?

I'm not sure this is happening more lately or it's just getting reported more often.

Even if both wingwalkers were in place (assuming there were two), the tug driver may not have been paying attention to their signals and likewise, the wingwalkers may not have been paying attention or just got complacent and said that everything looks good. Depending on which phase of the push this happened on, the wingwalker may not be at the wingtip. Some push procedures at certain places have the right wingwalker remain level with the tug prior to them pulling the aircraft forward so that may be what happened here.

Unfortunately at certain airports in the US, the planes barely fit and pushbacks are rarely ever perfect so there is not much room for error.

I'd say when you so something several million times per year you will have an accident here and there

Love how the article makes it sound like there was a "crash". Much more dramatic than necessary. The plane nicked the blast fence. They will do a wing inspection, throw on a new winglet, and this A346 will be on her way. I know the blended winglets on many aircraft are roughly $1M a piece; does anyone know the cost of winglets on older Airbuses or 744s?

If you have ever read an after-action report about wingtips hitting something at virtually any airline while the tug operator and wing-walkers were at work, including the relevant employees' written statements, you wouldn't have any questions whatsoever about how these kinds of things happen.

I was just looking to see if I could dig one out to read again for a good giggle.

I believe you can even remove it, defer it, and operate a revue flight home, and fix it at the MX base.

First, I'd like to say that where the plane was parked is a pretty tight space. Even worse when an A340 parks there, which it was, they got to be extremely careful.
Second, when these planes are on pushback, they do have 2 wing walkers(1 on each side) and I do hope they had one on each side yesterday morning but obviously they weren't careful enough.
I think they should keep the bigger planes away from the first gate there so no more incidents of that sort happen again.
Bring JetBlue To Mexico City! (TLC and/or MEX would be great)

Looks like the plane is making her way back to London now, departed at 11:48.

Is that taller blast wall new? I don't recall it being there so high before.

I was thinking the same thing; you gotta love the media. The link to the article said it "crashed" into a fence; then the announcer said it "clipped" the fence. One person on the plane was quoted as saying "we're ok though". Really? Must have been a slow news day.

"Flesh wound"

Pull the winglet and off you go...Much ado about nothing.

No need for the hangar, it's already on its way to SFO according to Flightradar.

Quoting Oshkosh1 (Reply 23):

Exactly. No problem to dispatch with one winglet missing, albeit with minor performance and payload restrictions.
So long 701, it was nice knowing you.
