Surinam / KLM Planes Ground Collision At PBM

Sun Sep 20, 2015 5:22 am

A ground collision occurred at PBM between a KLM 744 (PHBFA) and the sole PY 343 (PZTCP) yesterday at PBM.

News sources are a bit vague and only in Dutch, but apparently the KLM flight was taxiing for departure when it somehow struck the 343 of PY. The scheduled PY994 was canceled and the KL714 is now delayed by 24 hours.

Is there any major damage to the aircraft in question?

According to the Dutch news the damage was limited enough to consider further operations upon completing further inspections.

So the answer is there is no major damage, no injuries, just a minor fender bender.

One has to laugh a little on hearing of this mishap at PBM.

It is pretty unfortunate for both airlines, particularly for PY with just one long-haul aircraft in its fleet.

As per PBM schedule two widebodies should never be on ground simultaneously at the airport. Only on Saturdays do two widebody flights even operate to/from PBM, but without any overlap. One aircraft must have been delayed this Saturday for this incident to happen or the other must have arrived extremely early.

Perhaps the airport witnesses so few overlapping widebody flights, that inexperience resulted to a kiss between these two widebodies.

- dep. AMS 11:15 - arr. 15.15 PBM KL B744 Mon, Thu, Sat
- dep. PBM 17:50 - arr. 07.30 AMS KL B744 Mon, Thu, Sat

- dep. AMS 15:15 - arr. 19.45 PBM PY A340 Fri, Sat, Sun
- dep. PBM 22:20 - arr. 12.20 AMS PY A340 Fri, sat, Sun

PY operates twice more per week, but on days KLM does not operate. Consider these safe days !

I've been there and it sucks to be stranded in PBM, unless you buy a cheap flight to AUA or CUR while they sort it out! lol

PY has a problem as it has 5 flights, which means that it will take several days to catch up. Hopefully the planes aren't chock full, given that the summer peak is now over.

Maybe both oldtimers are damaged beyond economical repair? PH-BFA is one of the oldest B744 flying around with 125000 hours+ and is almost done. The SLM A340 is a few years newer but also over 20 years old. Last flight to the scrapper?

Both aircraft are currently making their way to AMS out of PBM, about 24 hours later then planned. I guess the damage wasn't too severe.

Not really in this case. They'll catch up pretty fast. On Mondays and Thursdays the aircraft stands idle at AMS, and thus is able to catch up the delay. Thus the maximum dleay for a few days is 24 hours.
