State Of Kuwait 747-8 At DAL

Sun Sep 20, 2015 4:52 pm

Landed at Dallas Love Field and was surprised to see a State of Kuwait 747-8 parked on the field. Wondering why it was here - although my guess would have something to do with oil. Any info would be appreciated.

If it's still there, it's been there for about 2 months. I traveled through DAL at least 10 times in July and August and it was parked towards the south end of 31R each time.

I think there is a big firm in DAL that does super VIP interiors for jumbo jets, maybe it was there for some VIP installation

There has to be. It's not the only non-special visit jumbo I've seen on the ground there for an extended period of time either. There is an A330-200 undergoing a similar procedure over by the Frontiers of Flight Museum.

That is correct. We've had a few interesting wide bodies in there over the years.

It's being outfitted by Associated Air Center, it's been in Dallas just about 2 years now. It is scheduled to be delivered near the end of the month. The Mexico 787 is in the hangar now where the 748 has been the last several months/years.

Also Associated has an MD80, A320CJ, a few 738 BBJ's on site as well being outfitted.

Yes, there is. Associated Air Center. They've done some narrowbodies and also the Saudi Kingdom 744 VIP over the years.

Two years isn't unusual for a VIP interior installation on a widebody where almost everything is custom built.

So you have to get the a/c stripped before the parts can be custom built?
The interior size of the a/c is well known, if measurements are off by a few inches the high price version of padding and duct tape should be available.

Custom VIP interiors usually have contracted gap clearances of less than 1 milimeter (inflight).

That is much less than the tolerances you have with the known interior dimensions. So everything has to be custom made in and for the actual frame.
All those efforts and the certification program (Effort almost similar to an entire new certification) need some time. 3 years for a widebody is pretty common.

There are currenty 3 747-8i for VIP completion here in HAM. 2 of which are here for 3 years now, 1 is here since June.

Indeed, a lot of the special designed interior features have to be certified via multiple supplemental type certificats, a very time consuming effort.

1 - L/N 1439 , A7-HHE
2 - L/N 1440, A6-PFA
3 - L/N 1510 , B-2479

The last aircraft is not a "real BBJ" aircraft , but receives a Quick install VIP interior for use as a VIP aircraft, but also convertable to normal airline operations.

I recall seeing the State of Kuwait plane in DAL about 2 years ago as well. I think it may have gone straight there after delivery?

You would think they would paint it after the interior is in . Less time in the sun and such.

So VIP configured a/c have that many certifications to be met?
I honestly was not thinking about that when it was mentioned that the a/c was there for interior fitting, just assumed since it was not for commercial use, the certifications were lower.

Don't forget you also get to do burn certs on all of the materials that are used for the interiors.

Man, I wish there was somewhere where you could view the field/activity at DAL, similar to Founders Plaza at DFW! I know Bachman Lake is good for viewing approaches from the north, but you can't see any field action.

how are these aircraft kept in flying condition during interior outfitting? are they occasionally taken outside for engine starts, etc.?

A little off topic but why does the State of Kuwait need a 748 or any type of 747 for that matter?

You could ask the same question for all the Gulf States which often have multiple widebodies for use by their royal families. It's a prestige thing.

I know that in the past it happened that those planes were flown to the outfitting facility and after landing the engines were removed.
After VIP completion, brand new engines (which include all modifications /SBs) were installed prior to the first flight.

You can pickle the engines and there are long term storage procedures in most AMM.

Most of the 747-8 VIP aircraft , incl. 9K-GAA used "loaned engines" to ferry the aircraft to the completion center.

What's interesting is they appear to have removed the wingtip extensions on that Kuwait 748.

I drive by there every morning on my way to work, I always check to see if they've been

reinstalled, figured that's a good sign she's fixin' to go flying

Does everything that goes into the airplane need to be approved by the FAA? I'm wondering if private (i.e. non airline) aircraft have different standards than airline planes.

On the NE side of the airfield , off Lemmon ave , is George Coker Circle.
The street dead ends right at the airfield fence, you have a great view of the
13L/35R runway, the new terminal , and off to your left, is the Kuwait 748
surrounded by all sorts of equipment.

Back in the pre 9/11 days, I parked there several times and photographed
Air Force 1, heck, you're so close to the runway I was full frame with my zoom
lense cranked back to 75mm
