Will TK now fly IST JNB DUR and IST JNB CPT? If they're not going to fly nonstop to these other cities in SA)">ZA, why not just partner with SA and not waste their own metal?

How is this a waste? They can fill the plane up and break in to a new market. Remember that South Africa works much like South America to/from North America. Planes sit around all day. This way, TK flies the plane on a revenue run.

TK is adding IST-CPT non-stop, which is why they are now doing DUR from JNB.

I think it is pretty nice for passengers that want to fly to/from Durban and into TK's vast network.

Also, this isn't a triangular routing. That would be something like IST-JNB-DUR-IST. This is IST-JNB-DUR-JNB-IST.

Except that the comment was made in the context of TK. This isn't a triangular route and it is a good use of a plane that would otherwise sit over in that parking area they have at JNB for planes that sit around all day.

Well, triangular routings make perfect sense to both airlines and passengers.

1. Significantly more economic to operate, as the aircraft operates one less sector: saves operating and crew charges.
2. Better use of available capacity, higher loadfactor and no waste of empty sector seats.
3. Passengers are offered one non-stop sector to/from both stations, and only suffer one intermediate stop on their return journey.
4. The airline is able to serve two stations that may not be sufficiently profitable on a very traditional AAA-XXX-YYY-XXX-AAA routing.

Some airlines have perfected the triangle routing over the years and make a nice profit out of them.

Talking about triangular routings is completely OT here, as this isn't a triangle route. It is a tag.

Even as a tag... JNB pax don't have to stop.

DUR pax do, however they don't have as much choice of airlines anyway, so the stop isn't going to make it any slower for American or European passengers to reach their destination as opposed to flying EK or QR otherwise which is slightly out of the way.

EK with their direct daily 77W's both to and from DUR? No tag?

Yeah, I'm fairly sure EK won't have to sweat it just yet.

Besides, one of the big markets from DUR is Australia.

And it's easier to have one stop a little out of the way than two or three for most people.
Durban. Melbourne. Denver. Hong Kong.

Well, they can connect in JNB anyway.

Don't bet on it. The mutual *A membership of SA and TK can play into that.
