AA DUB-JFK Three Tech Crew.

Hi all,

Just wondering if it's the norm for AA to crew their UK/ROI - JFK flights with three tech crew? Flew DUB-JFK on the 757 and noticed it was crewed by three pilots who rotated rest in blocked out J class seats. Thought that was pretty generous of AA for a seven hour flight! Is this the norm or something route/aircraft specific?

A lot of airlines block (premium) seats if there is no crew rest area

I am not sure about US Flight Time Limitation rules but maybe it was a training flight and there was a training Captain occupying the third seat?

Might the weather be a possibility? I don't know whats its been like over the NATS but its been quite stormy here (DUB) over the past few days with westerly winds blowing across the country. Add to that holding over JFK and any number of other scenarios that can occur. DUB-JFK can quickly turn from 7hrs to 8 1/2 even 9hrs if just a couple of things line up right... or wrong in this case.

Not only does this safeguard against delays at on both ends and pilot legality, but it is probably also contractual with APA.
