Summer Ends With No Ultra-LCC At YHM (Hamilton)

Wed Sep 23, 2015 12:54 pm

CBC is having a short report about the situation related to the two ultra-low-cost carriers that had announced their will to hub at YHM. Unsurprisingly to me, nothing happened yet.

I've been following closely and I do believe we will se New Leaf get going they are the only ones who seem active on social media.
I doubt think we ever see the other two take off.

Regarding the article I don't think the YHM management is doing near enough to market the airport.

Some say YHM can't really attract more passengers than they currently do, others think they could be don't do enough. There's probably a niche, but being in the shadow of YYZ is not easy.

Hamilton has a 4 fold problem.

1) YYZ - of course.

2) BUF is about an hour from anywhere in the city, making it very attractive. While the savings at BUF aren't what they were in the 2000-2012 glory days, they are still to be had and BUF is often more convenient.

3) The high yield traffic that might have bled off to YHM is now decently served at YKF - which is closer to where that traffic is. You can get into a major US3 hub at ORD with AA and you can get into Western Canada on WestJet.

4) The Downtown Toronto traffic that might have preferred a reverse commute down the Gardiner/QEW to slogging up the 427 now have tons of options at YTZ

The niches that YHM could serve are basically now all better served at other airports.

It doesn't help that YHM is located on the Western side of Hamilton.

I agree, that nothing will move forward now. We have to look at summer 2016. If the price is good, people will drive to YHM, but not for a 10 Dollar saving. Buffalo is not that attractive anymore with the current exchange rate, but for US destinations you will get always better prices from BUF. Domestic Canadian airfares are sky-high at the moment - here is the chance to start something.

If someone wants to start service next summer they have to be active now and in the winter to make people aware of the flights. If they start advertising in May many people will have booked their flights already.

Good luck to the LCCs at YHM!

And perhaps more than one destination too.
