Quoting SpaceshipDC10 (Reply 2): Some say YHM can't really attract more passengers than they currently do, others think they could be don't do enough. There's probably a niche, but being in the shadow of YYZ is not easy.

Hamilton has a 4 fold problem.
1)
YYZ - of course.
2)
BUF is about an hour from anywhere in the city, making it very attractive. While the savings at
BUF aren't what they were in the 2000-2012 glory days, they are still to be had and
BUF is often more convenient.
3) The high yield traffic that might have bled off to
YHM is now decently served at
YKF - which is closer to where that traffic is. You can get into a major US3 hub at
ORD with
AA and you can get into Western Canada on WestJet.
4) The Downtown Toronto traffic that might have preferred a reverse commute down the Gardiner/QEW to slogging up the 427 now have tons of options at
YTZ
The niches that
YHM could serve are basically now all better served at other airports.
It doesn't help that
YHM is located on the Western side of Hamilton.
