OAG Changes 10/2/2015: UA To NCL, NK Trims MCI

FAQ

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares what is for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...It does NOT compare to last year or now (UNLESS OTHERWISE STATED).

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5 JAN 4>5 ; means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. No other months were changed. I only list one direction, although it is possible the listed change is only one way. It is too difficult to average the two directions. I assume the change is roundtrip and that is most often the case.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. In most cases flights are rounded, but in the case of international service or markets with low frequency, fractions are shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS AT Macedonian Airlines (Greece)">IN ADVANCE?
Most airlines publish schedules 11 months in advance. This report covers the next 9 months. That avoids seeing schedules as they are loaded. Several LCCs load their schedules less than 9 months into the future. I remove the schedule adds if I see them and show a year over year (YOY) comparison if I notice them.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE SKYWEST
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard. This causes flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

Cloud Access resolved. Sorry for the missed week. The Cloud is a pain in the @ss.

I'm pretty sure seasonal summer-only service on ATL-ZRH started in mid-june in 2015. Therefore it the schedule change actually reveals an increase from 0 to 0.2 for next May. ATL-ZRH was changed from year-round to seasonal in 2014 in lieu of an increase to year-round on JFK-ZRH.

Would assume that is a cut for the winter slow season...a quick check on UA.com 15 daily flights on that route in June.

Definitely. This is likely an additional codeshare route with DL that got filed improperly. CZ also codeshares on JFK-MSY and LAX-MSY.

You will also see UA introduce a 777 on the route to help load up with international connections. Same with SFO-EWR. More efficient that running 2-3 narrowbodies within a 90min window.

Maybe using those slots for something with actual O&D?

The aren't many cities served only from PHL which would be logical routings from DCA. Definitely no need for 8x daily.

You mean MIA-FRA becoming year-round, or just a return of the summer seasonal ?

I misread the memo. The memo said this would not return for the summer as the company feels it is adequately served via CLT, PHl, and DFW.

If I'm counting correctly, it's:

21x Southwest
20x AA
9x United

Thousands and thousands of seats every day.

Pretty impressive, indeed.

Based on that, these are new routes for F9 that haven't been announced yet and not extensions from current schedule.

It has been rumored that the PHL daylight flight is getting the axe. BA flies 2x day (772, 788). I am curious if there will be any gauge changes. BA & US flew 3x day on 333; 772 & 788 well before the AA merger and joining the BA ATI agreement. Despite joining the larger AA network, I'd expect some type of capacity increase on PHL-LHR

As an anecdote, myself, my cousin, and his kids, having flown two roundtrips IAH-PHL over the last few weeks, noted that the IAH-PHL and PHL-IAH flights were packed. LFs had to be in the mid 90s or higher each time.
Some people were continuing on to Denver Westbound, and coming from somewhere (I presume Denver on the eastbound) but it was packed. Not a bad flight in the grand scheme of things especially for ~140$ roundtrip. Even landed 40minutes early at IAH from PHL one flight.
Hopefully the flights will be coming back, or go year round.

I think this is highly interesting (I've made this point in the past) not for what it means for MCI in particular, but for what it means for the NK formula in secondary markets. MCI is a pretty good size market and NK really can't make it work there to pretty prime destinations like DFW, and seemingly most of what remains probably is poor given the frequency level. I think this means NK would have a lot of problems in WN heartland markets like ORF, CMH, ABQ, SAT, BNA, IND, etc. that are neither leisure destinations nor mega-metropolises. If that is true it is VERY limiting to their future growth.

An amazing flop. I have to wonder if it was pilot related. I wonder how many bookings they took. I'm not sure I remember something like that getting grounded before it started for an existing airline on such a broad scale.

Interesting they choose CLT over MIA.

Not really, CLT is better positioned for domestic feed, especially across the Southeast, and Latin America feed probably wasn't enough to sustain the MIA flight. LH probably gets the bulk of the MIA O&D traffic, which I suspect is skewed to German originating, considering they are using A380s on the route.
