Cathay Receives Its 70th 777

Tue Sep 29, 2015 11:21 am

29 Sep 2015

Airline is largest 777 fleet operator in Asia

Boeing and Cathay Pacific Airways celebrated a significant achievement last Saturday (26 September) with the delivery of the airline’s 70th 777 aircraft – also the last and 53th 777-300ER (Extended Range) of the confirmed orders – that has made Cathay Pacific Asia’s largest operator of the 777 fleet.

With the latest delivery, Cathay Pacific’s 777 aircraft fleet comprises of 53 777-300ERs, 12 777-300s and five 777-200s. The airline is one of the launch customers for the 777X with 21 777-9X airplanes on order.

Cathay Pacific took delivery of its first 777-300ER in September 2007. This efficient aircraft allows the airline to modernise its long haul fleet with enhanced operational efficiency and extended range with more environmentally friendly features.

“The 777s have played an important role in Cathay Pacific’s fleet modernization and network expansion strategy,” said Ivan Chu, Chief Executive, Cathay Pacific Airways. “We operate the largest 777 fleet in Asia, and these aircraft offer the range, reliability and flexibility for us to build multiple daily frequencies on trunk routes, both within the Asia-Pacific region and, with the 777-300ERs, on long-haul and ultra-long-haul routes. Our 777 fleet has helped in our efforts to reinforce Hong Kong’s position as one of the world’s most important international aviation hubs.”

Cathay Pacific group operates flights to nearly 200 destinations worldwide with its own fleet of more than 200 aircraft.

“We have enjoyed a long-standing relationship with Cathay Pacific on the 777 program,” said Ihssane Mounir, senior vice president, Northeast Asia Sales, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. “We are honored to celebrate the delivery of Cathay’s 70th 777 airplane, and will continue to extend the fruitful partnership over the years with our next generation 777X.”

The 777-300ER, which makes up the largest part of the Cathay Pacific long-haul fleet, is the most fuel and cost-efficient airplane in its class as well as the most reliable twin-aisle aircraft in the world. It also has the highest cargo capability of any passenger airplane. The 777-300ER will receive further improvements in 2016 designed to reduce fuel use by 2 percent.

The 777-300ER has consistently won many accolades including "Best Aircraft Type" based on passenger preference polls, "Best in Class" based on fuel burn, passenger load cost and performance and "Best Residual Value for a Twin Aisle Airplane" among others.

It looks like six flight attendants on a ferry flight back to Hong Kong? What will they all be doing during the flight?

Couldn't the lady in the white pants have dressed up a bit for the occasion?

They have 150 delivered of which 147 still fly ! Indeed the UAE is on the continent of Asia, but probably they don't really count it as Asia but as Middle East instead. Also United have more (74) but no Asia of course.
nobody has ever died from hard work, but why take the risk?

Congratulations to Boeing and CX on reaching this milestone. Kind of bittersweet given that it is the last 777-300ER to be delivered to CX (for now, unless CX decides to order some more), and we'll have to wait until 2021 for the next CX 777 delivery.

I suppose technically you're right, the Middle East is part of Asia. I suppose what Mr Chu should've said is that CX is the largest 777 operator in East Asia.

In any case, 70 777s is a significant fleet. CX seems to be doing well despite the competitive landscape.

- HKG is no longer an exclusive gateway to China.
- Chinese airlines offer competitive products
- We see more and more direct flights from US/Europe to secondary airports in China
And yet CX management keeps delivering profits while their peers deliver excuses.

As mentioned, EK's fleet is far larger, and SQ's 777 fleet at its peak was larger as well; so that is a sort of pointless statement.

When was it ever?

Yes knew you guys would have said this haha. True.

I guess what they offer is competitive pricing only.

Yes, sad but true. Next wave would be 20+ delivery of A350 starting from 2016Q1.

In America, we call that 'business-appropriate attire', don't we? But yeah, yuck, really stands out.

Yes, I believe there are about 7 left; they'll disappear pretty quickly once the A350s start arriving from February.

The 70 B777's are a very impressive number which underlines the success of both the airline and this aircraft.
