Neither of the above is accurate.
EK advertised several markets when they acquired the birds, and among the most frequent (and first to launch) was in Australia, not North America.
i know my memory i sgetting fuzzy in my old age but I'm pretty sure it's accurate EK
's original order was for only 5 frames with stated intention to use them on DXB
. Coincidentally, the same as SQ
It's very likely that between the time they ordered the aircraft and the time they were delivered, that EK
's strategy for the A345 had changed. IIRC, SYD
started first because the aircraft arrived earlier than planned and I believe there were problems that delayed FAA certification of the A340-500 (fuel tank certification?). The launch customer was supposed to be AC
but they delayed deliveries and EK
took the slots and put them on routes that they were already operating. EK
was already in Australia when the A345 arrived. They needed the range of the A345 in order to reach the U.S. because no European country would given them 5th freedom as was the case with Singapore for example.
