Did Saudia serve ESB in the recent past?

I only ask this because I did see a Saudia 747 at ESB in Jan, 2014. I even have a picture of it.

Ever since I just assumed Saudia served ESB, turns out I was mistaken.

Saudia served ESB on a charter basis but quite frequently with a range of 747, 330 etc. Historically has been present at ESB for many years but never served ESB on a scheduled basis so that is new.

TK used to do JEDDAH and RIYADH from ESB from early 80'ies but discontinued after 20 years of service....

SV I am sure will continue Haj flights on a seasonal basis so as well as the mainline scheduled services we will continue to see other Saudia aircraft at ESB similar to IST.

A lot of recommendations but very little on what actually caused the accident.

From what I understand, the combined effect of flying below minima, pilot fatigue, over-reliance on not-so-accurate navigation data, incorrect airport data, and outdated meteorological info provided to the pilots caused the accident. Most of this stuff actually popped up in local media in the past 7 months. One can connect the dots and get an idea what went on during the crash-landing.

But why were the crew fixated on landing at KTM? Considering what is written here about holding and missed approach procedures of KTM on a.net, why didn't they divert after the first attempt?

Any ideas?

According to Airporthaber, LH cut flights MUC-IST and MUC-ADB in winter season due to less demand. MUC-ESB will continue 11 flights/week.
SWISS going to fly 2 weekly ZRH-ADB from February 2016 (this summer it was 3 weekly).

LH is suspending twice daily IST MUC for winter and summer 2016 and one daily MUC ADB will be suspended for the winter timetable and will be reinstated from April until end of October 2016.

ESB MUC will be the only route remaining by LH that will be served year-round and reduced frequency from 14 per week to 11 per week for the winter timetable and increasing to 2 daily in the summer timetable again.

This is the biggest capacity reduction by LH in Turkey historically with 2 daily IST and 1 daily ADB reduction and 3 weekly capacity cut to ESB a total of 48 flights from/to Turkey lost...woow

Yesterday I had a single day roundtrip ESB-IST-BLQ-IST-ESB on TK. Although weather was bad with lots of annoying turbulence, I was lucky that it all went well and all flights were on time.

TK IST-BLQ flights are very popular and on BLQ-IST segment it was 100% full with connecting passengers to everywhere (especially far east).

BLQ is a nice city in the heart of North Italy with many famous motorbike/car brand factories. Also food is very delicious. I rewarded myself visiting a local traditional restaurant called "Trattoria Zita". In this restaurant you don't have any choice at all, everyone eats whatever is meal of the day!

I've been chatting with some Turkish diplomats in Panama and they're basically confirming reports of TK starting the IST-BOG-PTY triangle route.

According to them TK is set on starting this route, TK just hasn't decided on a date to start this route (hence why I guess TK hasn't officially announced this route). TK representatives have been coming to Panama and going over the details of the route and apparently TK representatives will be paying Panama another visit soon. Basically, if nothing drastic changes in the Latin American market TK will officially announce this route soon.

TK will upgrade the thrice weekly MNL service from A340 to 77W later this month, but what happened to the flight going daily? TK faught for the Philippines to give them entitlements. And when they finally did a few months ago, TK announced daily flights later this year but nothing happened...

I can answer that one myself. From 09 February next year TK will increase MNL to daily, with a mix of three weekly 77W and four weekly A340.

TK084 IST0130 – 1845MNL 77W 136
TK086 IST0235 – 2015MNL 343 x136

TK085 MNL2200 – 0530+1IST 343 x136
TK085 MNL2230 – 0520+1IST 77W 136

I wonder though why the new outbound flights gets a new flight number while the new returns are the same...

TK has 31 aircraft with no name.

3 A321
6 A332
7 A333
7 B738
5 B739
3 B773

And following names are used 2 times:

Amasya (2 B738)
Artvin (2 B738)
Bingöl (2 B738)
Canakkale (1 A332, 1 A321)
Erciyes (1 B773, 1 A321)
Hatay (1 A320, 1 B738)
Manisa (2 B738)
Mardin (1 B738, 1 A320)
Nigde (1 B738, 1 A321)
Ordu (1 B738, 1 A321)
Tunceli (1 B738, 1 A321)
Van (1 B738, 1 A321)

Question: Has TK any rules of naming aircraft?

EVA Air is launching IST flights, starting from March 27. Earlier when TK started the TPE route (or when EVA started codesharing) EVA had stated that they would be starting IST. I didn't expect it to be so soon and with the 77W.

Schedule:
BR079 TPE0030 – 0730IST 77W x357
BR080 IST1320 – 0515+1TPE 77W x357

BR over the summer announced their plans to commence IST during March 2016. More interestingly they plan to go daily later in 2016.
So basically within 1-year IST-TPE will go from 0 weekly flights to up to 14.

BR is a good little Star carrier, with some good beyond connection opportunities for each side.

Today's newspapers in Turkey talked about the signing of the financial backing for the the new Istanbul airport. Mostly Turkish Government backed banks. And DHMI also guaranteeing the amount of traffic ???
And opening of the airport it scheduled for, first quarter of 2018. (it used to be last quarter of 2017)
I am sure this is to be expected in a project this size.

I had 4 experiences with TK last week 1 round trip IST-PRG in coach and 1 round trip to CPH in J(or C whatever) PRG flights very uneventful and full. CPH outbound was interesting because the purser was borderline crazy she was laughing screaming telling stories to other FA's in this early flight where people were trying to catch some sleep, I am kind of shy so I held up, but the danish guy next to me complained and she stopped but rolled her eyes and bitched about the guy to the other FA's in Turkish
Return flight purser was a true professional and was one of the best I have ever seen in TK. I thanked her and wrote an email to TK acknowledging her professionalism. Both flights were on 321's with very decent seats wide and reclining better than the cancelled out middle seat intra euro J i am used to. I am wondering if all the fleet have this new J interior because it makes a difference.

I take some photos on my trips need to learn how to upload them here. All the best

Remember the last time what I had to go through changing the return on my THY ticket???
As usual, THY ticket change saga continues

I had to change my return ticket again, due to my work schedule. I was in a town outside Marmaris, and knew that I had to get to Marmaris THY sales office to change the ticket in person. (Now I learn that once you make a change to any ticket, the second time can only be done in person at a THY sales office.) Not true, the first change I had to go to Taksim sales office...remember???

To my dismay, I arrive to find out that the THY Marmaris office has moved to DLM airport. THY call center confirm that I have to go to DLM to change my ticket:

-1.5 hrs drive each way
-1.5 hrs at the counter with two THY employees
-11.5 TK parking fee at DLM
-At least $30 gas for the trip.
-Messed up dinner plans with family

Many apologies by the staff at DLM that it took so long and I had to drive to DLM. Their biggest problem was they didn't know what to do with my Comfort class return ticket, now that beyond Oct24 TK does not offer Comfort back to JFK (They opted for the easiest option, to drop me back to Y and refund me the return portion difference).

But still, it is just crazy that it took 200km+ driving and 1.5 hrs at the counter to make a date change on my ticket.
What would have happened if my travel plans changed and I was in Anchorage, AK? Was I to fly to SFO to change my return ticket?

Maybe some of you might have similar experiences with comparable size airlines, not me.

It is a disgrace that the call center (strike that, the customer service in general) of an airline this size can't manage simplest tasks without hour long phone calls or visits to sales offices. Most airlines allow passengers to do any type of change / cancellation / refund via their websites and even mobile apps. In this day and age this is unacceptable.

Yesterday my colleagues took TK2174, IST to ESB. It was on an A333 and plane took a very strange routing to fly to ESB. It flew first to Eskisehir and then turned to north, all the way up Bolu and Gerede. Then it turned south and approached Ankara. This zig-zag routing increased flight time at least 10 to 15 minutes. I thought that it was probably due to bad weather.

However the same plane took a more strange routing on the return flight to IST. Considering the other planes taking a direct flight between Ankara and Istanbul at the same time, I have difficulty to explain this strange routing of TK2175. What are your thoughts on this?

TK is going to start reusing 777s on their JFK flights from Summer 2016 onward.

Two 777s and one 330 daily.

Not sure if it's going to be the 777 cabins with comfort class or just with C and J classes.

Onur Air ownership drama continues...

Onur Air sued by Iranian Oil Ministry

Onur Air, a private airline based in Istanbul which is allegedly connected to Babak Zanjani an Iranian billionaire who is currently imprisoned in Iran over major corruption charges, is reportedly being sued by Iran’s Oil Ministry. The Ministry has claimed all of the stakes of Onur Air since Zanjani is accused of swindling $2.8 billion from the Iranian state after selling oil on behalf of the former Iranian government.
Iran is reported to have filed a number of legal actions to take all the stakes of Onur Air which it says Zanjani has purchased at above $200 million by the Iranian state’s money.
