Thu Oct 01, 2015 3:59 pm

DFW Airport has unveiled a new logo, retiring the 14 year old blue and white SFO style image.

Looks like someone was hasty in re-designing the logo.

My rating is 3/10.

Perhaps they can fix the EY load counts while they are at it. They might have done a better job with that.

Awful... looks like something out of the 70's with a slightly updated font.

I like the orange, but the design is pretty basic. Not awful, not great.
It's been a while since I've been on the ramp in B, but a few years ago there were still a few Braniff signs/logos etc on some doors and things like that.

Gee, bet that'll cost a pretty penny to rebrand all the airport signage,

I don't know that I'm sold on the color, but the design itself is, IMHO, actually quite clever. To me it resembles a runway bisecting the letters.

Nice clean design, but begs the question - why ? It's not like it has any advertising value outside their own choir.

I think it's a brilliant way to pay homage to the constant construction and the millions of safety orange cones and safety orange signs that direct you, (often poorly) to where you want to go. In fact, the lines that do not connect do an excellent job of mimicking the roadways that do not connect. All in all, I guess on some reflection it does a good job of representing the DFW of today. [yes, tongue in cheek]

Sadly, I don't really think it represents the positives, or the future, or says anything about where the airport is going or wants to be and I like the old logo better.

Sigh, why is amateur graphic design taking over??

The names of the chapels at DFW are "Braniff Interfaith Chapel" and "Braniff International Chapel." They were re-named with these new titles about ten years ago. A group of former Braniff employees raised the money to re-model the chapels.

I can't say I'm the biggest fan. I liked the sky-blue color and sweeping curves of DFW's older logo - they meshed well with the big sky we have in flat Texas and the potential for one to rise to great places when traveling out of DFW. Instead, as eugdjinn so accurately pointed out, I am now reminded of the gigantic amounts of road construction that plague DFW groundside.

You're right! It looks like they were going for runway stripes. My favorite logo in that category is PEK's - it very cleverly takes the character 首 (shou, the first part of the Chinese word for "capital city") and transforms it into a plane lifting off from sideways piano keys.

Holy meh. It basically evokes nothing except millions of dollars of wasted money. Which I suppose is appropriate for DFW.

That's a shame. The DFW logo was one of my favorites. It looked great on the SkyLink and all the gates. All the signage is already blue too. Overall the airport is very pretty.

Ugh, why didn't they just leave it alone? Total waste of money.

Actually after having a quick glance of PDF, I could understand how a lot of money was put towards this. They basically came up with elaborate guidelines on how to use the logo properly. Not sure about 1.5 million, but I find the PDF a bit impressive.

Overall its not too bad. But I'd still argue this was really unnecessary. And if they're doing all this, they might as well change the signage to orange as well. Go big or go home

I suggest keeping one or two Skylink trains in blue as a "heritage" livery train! Maybe paint one car up in the old Airtrans grey as well.

Just your standard corporate brand book that any company with an established brand has. It's no more or less impressive than any Fortune 500 company I've worked with. The rate doesn't seem that high to me... a lot of times it's partially based on the perceived value of the brand and how visible it'll be. Seeing how this is branding for a major hub airport and millions of people will see elements of it, it's not that high. There's also likely a huge amount of focus group and research time in it well beyond physical logo design. Something like this has to fall under all sorts of accessibility guidelines if airport signage is going to be based on it.

Fair enough. I've just never seen branding guidelines like this before, so I thought it was neat. Although, as you said, I'm sure everyone has one.

This is what I don't understand. Why is the brand so important to the airport? I would argue the main brands of an airport are the airlines that serve it. Most of the people who fly through DFW are either connecting on AA or are O&D passengers. No one is flying through DFW or any specific airport because of their "brand". I could understand if this was a large company where in which having a new brand will attract a lot of new customers, but in this case, I don't see how this move will make a difference.

I guess they really want to focus on their partnership with NTTA and TollTag, because that's all I see looking at all that blue and orange. Hopefully they won't jack up rates even further to pay for this.

That's my sentiment too. How often would you see TV ads saying "come transit at DFW" then you can rush out buying a plane ticket to purposely transit at that airport?

If the agency was paid $1.5 million, it was not for the 3 letter logo only. Perhaps $75 to $100k. The rest was for the strategy phases, potentially research and from a design standpoint would be creating a design system, (layout and design ALL the other elements) and all the final artwork. They did A LOT for that $1.5. If the agency had to go back to the drawing board due to reasons that were NOT their fault, eg: they would need to carge for anything that was asked for outside the original scope. (Brochures, internal and external websites etc) An original proposal for $260,000 can grow to $1.5 million for many reasons. No agency gets paid $1.5 million bucks for a logo.

I don't know who did it, but I'm sure the agency worked hard for that money.

There's nothing technically challenging here. This is one weekend's work for a middle-of-the-road graphic designer. The fact that the airport sees it as a $1,500,000 project is boggling. 1.5m should include all of the actual signage, labor, etc.

The end result will be precisely zero added revenue or air traffic growth. $1.5m could have fixed a damned lot of potholes.

Horrible.

For some reason, to me, Blue is much more relaxing than Orange. Orange or shades of red and yellow almost bring up the feeling of a headache. Orange is nothing but a depressing evening home alone.

They should have left it alone.
