A buddy of mine lives east of PIT and he noticed of late planes are departing to the east and landing from the west. I maintain its probably just a wind shift but he said that it has never gone on this long (a couple of weeks).
Is there runway work etc that is dictating eastern departures?

No...if the winds dictate it they will use the 10s for departure. 75 percent of the time though conditions favor the 28s. That being said they will land 10L late at night for noise abatement...and also 10L and R are the only cay III runways and the iOS has lower minimums so that would be another thing that would land and depart the 10s as well.

I think what he's speaking of is a Suicide Op. Similar to what LAX does late at night to keep all arrivals and departures west of the shoreline.

The wind at PIT is currently 030 at 8. A 030 wind makes 10 the preferred runway. Nothing more to it than that!

Check out the wind archive at weather.com. We've had E or SE winds since the 21st. That is extremely unusual indeed.

I can't speak for their current SOP but they probably still have a runway use program at PIT.
