Sun Oct 04, 2015 12:11 am

Does anybody know why by chance the scandinavians travel the most in the world even though their population is so small comparison to other countries?

Are you sure its not a metric such as trips per capita?

Where did you find this information to ask the question? I think some reasons are obvious, a cold climate half the year round, more vacation time than other western counterparts, average per capita income levels. I wouldn't think there would be just one answer, Scandinavia is quite civilized in many ways, I think it would be a nice place to spend a few years.

Yes Scandinavians/Nordics travel a lot, many reasons I believe: Relatively high incomes, high cost of living in home countries, long holidays, the climate. Domestic travelling is popular also, it's typical a family has a summer house/cottage in the country, their own or shared.

In many Western European countries vacation time is allocated in larger increments than for the same American worker in the same job.

I can answer with regards to Norway at least, and some of these things apply to the other Scandinavian countries as well.

- High income
- Lots of vacation time, usually 4-5 weeks paid vacation
- Cold climate making people want to travel to warmer places
- Long distances domestically, poor road & rail network to several areas. If you're located in the very southern parts of Norway, it's about the same distance to travel to the northern parts of the country as to Southern Italy.
- The Norway and Sweden parts of Scandinavia is on a peninsula, if you want to go to continental Europe you need to fly, or drive/use the train via Storebælt which is a very long route for most Norwegians.
- State sponsored air travel to/from/within rural areas

I've read that for longhaul intercontinental travel, Germany and Switzerland are 1st and 2nd in number of trips in relation to population. Forget which one was 1st.

I have reached the maximum paid vacation time after 15y of service: 6 weeks 3 days, plus around 10-13 public holidays. Some cuts (3-5 days?) are expected in the future though, there's an attempt to reduce unit labour costs in the country.

Much the same in Finland, the country is an island practically.

How about Iceland? Didn't find any data, I know they travel a lot too.

Yep, Finland is in the same situation geographically. And Iceland is an actual island of course. Maybe Mjøelnir has some input regarding that.

I was under the impression (after talking to some Icelanders about this) that it's very very common to fly to Denmark at least once a year for shopping, often more than once a year, plus a summer holiday in southern Europe or Florida once a year.

Take 4 of the nations who continuously rank in the top 10 of whichever global QOL survey you run, and it's not surprising they also figure high on a list of vacationers. It is also 4 countries whos survival depend on exporting their goods and services, again adding to the travelling.

Quoting Lesfalls (Reply 3):

5 weeks + 5 days paid vacation a year; the right to take 3 consecutive weeks of vacation in the main (summer) holiday period; the expectation that you will use all of your vacation time. That's the allocation granted from day 1 staring in a new job as a full-time employee, in a place where the minimum wage is around 20USD an hour.

I, for myself, travel abroad around 6-8 times a year on average. That's more than most though.

I think the average Icelander goes abroad 1-2 times a year - one trip for sun (Spain, Florida, Portugal etc) and one city trip (shopping trip to the US or Nordics, football trip to the UK etc). Next summer at least 5% of the population will be traveling to France though!! (the Icelandic national football team have qualified for Euro 2016, their first major tournament)

Has to do with standard of living and the climate that makes travel to warmer countries a common option for vacations. Travel to foreign cities fror shopping and sightseeing is also very common in the Life of Scandinavians.

With many international companies Scandinavian business travel is well developed.

Yes beer is expensive in Norway but I think nowadays UK beats Finland and Sweden at least.. Typically a pint of lager costs 4,5 Euros (3,2 Pounds) in Helsinki bar

I can very much relate to what you said about the darkness. The issue isn't so much the temperature, but the fact you get as little as 2 hours of sunlight per day through December. Of course, the summer is the opposite and the sun rarely goes dow in June.

HELyes your chart is voodoooo magic.
It shows for the Netherlands 1.1 trips domestically. The stats are NOT aviation. You can not fly domestically!
Use of car/bus/rail would move the USA to LaaST place.
THIS DATA IS ABSOLUTELY USELESS. IT INCLUDES EVERYTHING INCLUDING LOCAL TRAIN TRIPS TO THE GROCERY STORE,!!
Domestic trips in Belgium and Holland dont exist in airplanes.
I suppose the. finns all travel srounf
D thier country on B787's andA380's

Some stats that I think support this:

* Iceland population 2014 329,100

* UK/Iceland passengers 2014 768,117

* Return flights per capita 2014 1.17

* December '14 (mainly shopping?) passengers 74,530

* December passengers c.f. average month 2014 +16.4 per cent

Of course not all passengers are Icelandic. But I cannot imagine that tourism to Iceland in December (when the sun is only ever briefly seen in the south, hardly if at all in the north) is very high (but, nevertheless, Northern Lights?).

Note here that BA does not currently and has not operated to Iceland although it does launch a three-times-weekly rotation between LHR and KEF (BA800/01) from the 25th of this month. Note this new service will operate on Days 3, 5 and 7. So it may be at least partly aimed at brief weekend shopping or football visits to the UK from Iceland.

The historic lack of a BA service may suggest that a significant majority of all trips between Iceland and the UK originate in Iceland.

Here is some published data on price comparisons between the UK and Iceland:

'Consumer Prices in United Kingdom are 13.03% lower than in Iceland

'Consumer Prices Including Rent in United Kingdom are 8.51% lower than in Iceland

'Rent Prices in United Kingdom are 4.64% higher than in Iceland

'Restaurant Prices in United Kingdom are 10.74% lower than in Iceland

'Groceries Prices in United Kingdom are 20.12% lower than in Iceland

'Local Purchasing Power in United Kingdom is 23.21% higher than in Iceland'

Alot of the December traffic is for shopping as you stated, but a large chunk of it is also for the English football games around that period. As Icelanders get vacation time around Christmas, they often take the opportunity and kill 2 stones with 1 throw (fly to London, see a game and go shopping before going home again).

Regarding winter traffic, your observations would've been correct until last year. After the #VisitIceland and #MyStopover campaigns, along with DY and U2 adding service and the emergence of WOW, and of course the huge FI expansion on top of all that, tourism in the winter surged by at least 300% (last February I remember the number was 332%). Reykjavik hotels are well booked now for every time of the year, and at least half the people you see downtown on a normal weekday are ovbviously tourists (you can spot them by their outdoor gear).

And BA has operated to Iceland, but only very briefly. They flew 5x weekly to LGW with 734s from 2006-8 as BA2790:

And, more surprisingly, they occasionally used the downtime in the Concorde schedules for charters to Iceland:

This is however the first scheduled LHR service by BA. It joins FI, WOW, SK, DY and U2 in the year-round service group. Many European LCCs, along with legacy carries such as DL ex-JFK and LH ex-MUC and FRA, only operate during the summer.

You are not taking into consideration Icelandair (and now WOW Air) and their hub. December is X-Mas, which means a lot of people flying from the US to Europe (and vice versa), so flying via KEF with FI is a very popular choice (for instance, for students in Boston; so BOS-KEF-LHR could be your British grad in the Boston area instead of some Icelandic heading to London for shopping to do some Icesave) .

Btw I find interesting that no one has mentioned Qatar or the UAE. Most expats in those countries by contract have 1 return ticket per year to their country (so that already means 2 flights per year per person). Then in the case of Dubai there are many regional offices of international companies that imply a lot of travel to region (India, Middle East, Central Asia, Africa). And of course your well-off locals and Western expats that will take advantage of EK/EY and their local tax-free salary and travel a lot. On the other hand, both Qatar and UAE are virtually islands (unless you are local) since they are bordered by Saudi Arabia (and Oman to the UAE which can only provide some weekend abroad).

Sure buddy. It's basically a lamp with a special light bulb that luminates a very bright "daylight" type of light. I don't know the specifics technically, but you can get one of those lamps at most electronics stores or lamp stores. They come in everything from normal looking lamps to more advanced lamps with timers that follow the natural summer sunlight throughout the day, even the winter. If you decide to get one, buy one of quality from a known brand. There are cheap ones on the market of poor quality with normal light bulbs that still advertise being "daylight" lamps.

I have not seen any statistic about how much Icelanders do fly, I just had another look without finding anything. Personally I do not know anybody who has not travelled to another country and that is always by air.

Are there any passenger ferry services between Iceland and neighbouring countries?

They have those at the library at my school, come in handy during the December tests when it's easy to get depressed!

Regarding a ferry, the boat Norræna goes once a week from Seydisfjordur in the east of Iceland to Denmark via the Faroes, but I don't know anyone that has used it. It takes a few days at least instead of 3 hours by air, so only people taking their car with them or tourists looking for an experience use it.
Nothing compares to taking off in an empty 757 with full thrust!

Think if I lived in a freezing Nordic winter and pay extortionate amounts for a beer I'd be thinking of a frequent trip somewhere too !

This. It is not that we want to or can afford to travel a lot. We simply have to, for economic reasons.

And I'm actually not joking. A simple boat trip to Tallinn could bring quite a profit, compared to buying all that alcohol in Finland. Of course it is still more expensive than not drinking alcohol at all, but that is not an option given all the darkness.

   Yes and better to buy a powerfull daylight lamp, I have used one for years in winter time and it really helps. For me it works best if I have time to use it 20-30 minutes in the morning regularly, you just keep it rather close to your face but you don't have to stare it. The light is very bright but it doesn't irritate your eyes.

Tallinn is nice but I don't see the point taking a ferry there just for my Friday beers

I wish Copterservice was still in business, they offered last minute heli rides to Tallinn for EUR 50 one way, unfortunately that fun didn't last long. FinnComm ATR and Estonian Air Saab 340 were cheap choices too, the ticket prices look rather different now.

Some years ago a friend of mine went to Iceland to study the language for a year and she took her car with her and used that very ferry at the start of the year and the end of her study. She came home by air though in between times.

Northern lights are very popular!

Check the northern night-time horizon here in the UK. Here's a photo taken in the Lake District last night (7 October). More is forecast as the attached article explains:
