Through Flights/Flights With Stopovers In 2015

Tue Oct 06, 2015 2:42 pm

Flying DL a couple weeks ago, I noticed the opposite side of the airsick bag reads something like "I'll Be Back (Place this card on your seat during stopovers)". This, along with getting JustPlanes' Air Canada 767 DVD featuring the routing YYZ-SCL-EZE and back, got me wondering how many multi-stop flights still exist today among major airlines. You used to see some interesting ones within the US, with DL using 727s on milk runs to smaller cities in Louisiana in the late '90s before continuing to DFW.

I figure WN still has a few despite having seemingly shifted to a more hub-and-spoke system. There's also the aforementioned AC flight, KLM's return flight from SXM stopping in CUR for technical reasons before returning to AMS, and a couple BA flights to the Caribbean which do this. How many others still operate among large carriers?

Yes, and US airlines love to market them as "direct" flights, even though they go via a hub and have an aircraft change. I believe the reason for doing this is to put their flights at the top of the search results. Very deceptive, not to mention annoying.

BRU has terminated at YUL for the past couple of years.

Another AC flight with a stop: YYZ-SCL-EZE. That's AC's only current route that includes a 5th freedom sector.

Others involving New Zealand include:

CI TPE-BNE/SYD-AKL ( the AU stopover varies by the day of the week)

CI TPE-MEL-CHC ( I think this is seasonal)

In the 'I'll believe it when I see it on the ground at AKL' category - PR are supposed to be starting a 4 x weekly MNL-CNS-AKL service in December... with an A320! It is actually loaded on their website.

Off the top of my mind:

KL

AMS-DAR-KGL-AMS
AMS-JRO-DAR-AMS
AMS-AUH-BAH-AMS
AMS-KWI-MCT-AMS
AMS-AUA-BON-AMS
AMS-BOG-CLO-AMS
AMS-EZE-SCL-EZE-AMS
AMS-SIN-DPS-SIN-AMS
AMS-TPE-MNL-TPE-AMS

And the one you already mentioned the AMS-SXM-CUR-AMS

The top 2 change a lot from season to season but are always in some kind of combination.

LH: FRA-JED-ADD, FRA-KUL-CGK (Although about to cease)
BA: LHR-SIN-SYD
CX: HKG-DXB-BAH

and many more.
Especially in Africa, one-stops tend to still be quite frequent both with local and international carriers. To name a few, I've been on LH ADD-KRT-FRA (now ceased unfortunately), ET ADD-JRO-ZNZ . In fact, I believe quite a significant part of ET s network operates as one-stop (i.e. ADD-KGL-BJM and ADD-FIH-BZV involving an incredibly short flight just across the Congo river). Also, last time I've been to Rwanda, most foreign carriers incl QR, KL and TK combined it with another stop in the region (mostly EBB but also JRO).

That being said, the phenomenon also occurs in South America's north, where PY operates a network largely based on one-stop routes including, correct me if I'm wrong, GEO-PBM-MIA and PBM-CAY-Brazil

LX: ZRH-DXB-MCT and vv
LH: FRA-DOH-MCT and vv
KL: AMS-DOH-MCT and vv

Plus SIN-HKG-SFO, SIN-ICN-SFO.

Also, not sure if these have stopped (the Google flights functionality hasn't been working lately), but SQ also had SIN-DXB-RUH (or JED?), SIN-DXB-IST, SIN-DXB-CAI, SIN-MXP-BCN among others.

BKK, KUL, SIN, and CGK are notorious for having fifth freedom flights. Among others, you can fly (or could fly until recently) AF, KL, QR, LH, ET, WY, and HY between those four cities.

SIN - DPS used to have both KL and QR on the route, which made for really cheap fares to Bali.

I know a couple of websites try to keep lists of these up to date but it's hard since these flights change quite a bit. Air Zimbabwe used to have a HRE-SIN-PEK flight I think 2x weekly on 762.

UA IAD-NRT-SIN, UA ORD-HKG-SIN come to mind. I am sure Alaska operates a few milk runs in Alaska, and UA does their Micronesia island hopper. All SQ flights to the US have stopovers. NZ AKL-LAX-LHR, UA has a couple flights to the Middle east that include stopovers.

That's the general history of the practice, although it's worth noting that description doesn't really apply to WN. WN never schedules flight numbers that change aircraft at a midpoint (though it does occasionally happen for operational reasons) and doesn't have its flight results displayed in any venue alongside other carriers anyhow. If you book an STL-LAX-SJC through flight on WN (as I have coming up next month), it's a virtual lock that you found it only on southwest.com and will be able to stay on the aircraft during the stop at LAX.

I'll believe it if the service lasts more than 6 months... and yesterday PAL said they might relaunch PER (suspended after 3 months)... a big laugh as the only reason they flew to PER was a legal maneuver to keep Cebu Pacific out.

I don't think anybody has mentioned UA's IAD-KWI-BAH service. I flee that last year with a three-day stopover in KWI on the return. They also used to operate IAD-DXB-DOH.

So we have quite a lot of stopover flights it seems. But most if not all are for commercial reasons, are there any with a technical stop only?

When I started at KLM we did what to me will always be the best route ever. AMS-BON-GYE-UIO-BON. Those were the days. Leave the tropical island of Bonaire in the middle of the night. Sunrise at Guayaquil and then see the volcanoes on the short hop to the old Quito. Stock up on some shrimps and fly back to Bonaire to be having a BBQ on the boat in the afternoon!
