Definitely one of the best interiors I've ever seen.

A bit more colour could have been applied but this interior reflects Finnair at it's best.

I think it is doing rather well size wise

Yes they (with JAL) have managed to make HEL the fifth largest airport (S15) in Europe for Asian flights, between AMS and MUC.

Touchscreen? Will it have the dreadful ¨underseat box¨?

Yes touchscreen, please no annoying underseat box... Will check that right away next week on GOT-HEL.

TAP: Not really. Portugália belongs 100% to TAP. Although they operate with a different AOC, they have one management and they have one call sign. TAP's fleet consists of 77 aircraft.

Ok didn't think Portugália.

A bit similar thing with Finnair's feeder Nordic Regional Airlines, former FlyBe Nordic, now fully owned by AY but they have been looking for a new partner. NORRA's fleet consist of 26 aircraft, 12 ATRs + 12 E190s + 2 E170s. So you could say Finnair's fleet consists of 72 aircraft together, three more A350s still expected to arrive by the end of year, not sure when the first A343s will leave.

Great choice to commence this new AY widebody service to AMS......

In former times AMS was the AY station that used to see daily DC8-63 and DC10-30 to HEL, JFK, CPH.

I just came off AY660 OSL-HEL, and all due respect but I'm not really impressed. I don't think Qatar would have accepted this aircraft in it's current state. Many small details in the cabin that grabbed my attention. For example I accidentally bumped with my feet into the IFE box (which by the way is very small) and it had a loose cap, as well that it's hanging very loose as a whole. Someone is gonna break one of these sooner or later. Also the IFE itself didn't work for everyone, crew didn't know how to fix it so people who wanted to give the IFE a try were relocated to seats with a working IFE. Mine started working 30 minutes into the flight, although it was initially in Russian. There is no separate IFE controls, so everything has to be done on the touch screen, this is a bit of a bummer, I hate it when people are poking on the screen in the back of my seat, and I don't like doing it to others either, it's annoying. Luckily the touch screen is very responsive and the interface is very smooth, so a gentle touch is enough. You can't tilt the screen (at least I couldn't find out how), so if the person in front reclines his/her seat you're stuck with the IFE at an angle. The IFE is very poor otherwise, you get some films/tv-shows, a flight map and the camera's. The camera facing forward (the one that shows the forward landing gear when it is down) is called "down", which is another detail that somehow annoys me. Flight map is also quite limited, it shows a fancy a350 model, and you can pinch and zoom etc, but there is no simple "top down" map, or autozoom function. Funny thing is that the IFE is running Android, I managed to pull up the application switcher and an empty notification area. They disabled the ability to pull these things up on the homescreen, but on the movies screen you could still do it. The seats are terrible (I flew in Economy), no support for the lower back, so you'd have to put the pillow there on a long flight. Wouldn't really like to sit in this seat for longhaul flights. Some other things I noticed:
- The airplane is huge....
- The winglets are huge...
- The windows are huge... I like a lot, this is the best IFE. 787 has taller windows, A350s are wider. Making them wider instead of taller was a very good decision IMHO...
- There is quite a gap between the seat and the wall, making it hard to sleep against the wall.
- The cabin is high, giving a very spacious feeling
- It's very silent, even on takeoff.

Alltogether it's a beatiful aircraft, but Finnair could have done better then this.

Well, it seems AY benefited from the NEW aircraft effect on its opening flights:

- HEL-AMS carried 289 pax on 297 seats: Load factor 97%
- AMS-HEL carried 255 pax on 297 seats: Load factor 86%

Keep in mind, that this is not a regular service. The A350 does a few European rotations for crew familiriazation purposes and to iron out minor issue. After that these planes are put on long haul service.

LHR and BRU may get A350s on a regular basis in the future, as AY does few rotations a week there with wide-body AC.

From February 2016 the A350 will be used twice weekly on the BRU-HEL rotation. It will replace the twice weekly A340 rotation on AY811/AY812.

They really want to show their new bird around before the first LH flight in Nov, their narrow bodies get a little rest... The announced A350 schedule: AMS OSL BCN AGP HAM BRU TXL GOT DUS VIE MUC LHR CPH and RVN

AY A350 will visit LHR and BRU regulary, they need more cargo capacity there.

The delayed delivery axed ARN but I'm sure they'll fix that, perhaps FRA CDG ZRH MAN MAD also? They said JFK gets their A350 before the end of the year, they want to be the first one before Qatar

Cargo into/from Brussels?

Can anyone shed light on what BRU has as a source or destination of cargo for Finland? Vodka in bound? Beer & choci's outbound?

I count myself privileged to sit under the approach to BRU 02 out at Waterloo and see a Finnair A340 once or twice a month, so graceful, and a refreshing change from all the normal stuff (as are the few cargo flights that grace the sky, mainly on B747-400s)

Probably some booze and chocis but mainly other stuff   Its all about connections.

They have cargo logistics hubs in Brussels and London, Helsinki has the largest cargo hub in the Nordic region. Cargo is important for them, Belgian pharmaceuticals to China, Norwegian salmon to Japan, Korean electronic components to Germany...

Actually twice a week, in January the timetable shows A333, from February BRU should get A350 regulary.

I flew it into HAM today, quite a nice flight and very comfortable..lots of teething problems with frozen IFE screens though, and one bulkhead screen for the map/flight details was stuck on it's previous flight to Malaga, quite funny when the other screens said we were actually going to Hamburg. The flaps are very noisy when extending and retracting, much like the A380

Quoting rebr (Reply 69):

I just came off AY660 OSL-HEL, and all due respect but I'm not really impressed. I don't think Qatar would have accepted this aircraft in it's current state. ... For example I accidentally bumped with my feet into the IFE box (which by the way is very small) and it had a loose cap, as well that it's hanging very loose as a whole. Someone is gonna break one of these sooner or later. ... You can't tilt the screen (at least I couldn't find out how), so if the person in front reclines his/her seat you're stuck with the IFE at an angle. The IFE is very poor ... The seats are terrible (I flew in Economy)

Can only agree- just came of from the Hamburg flight! Same problems, the IFE box under the front seat was loose, the PTV-screen was not movable at all (and NO music channels were loaded, only movies), the backrest is far too low/small (the headrest was below my shoulder level). Next problem, the divider to Business Class is far too small/low. Economy passenger were taking pictures of the Business Class during the flight over the bulkhead (J passengers felt like animals in a zoo).
On top, the AY service was ridiculous poor. No certificate for the flight, no in-flight magazine in the seat pockets (and the one offered was the NON-IFE issue!), no music channels, chaotic service etc.! Not a good start to begin with.

Final Verdict: I would choose AY's A330 in 2-4-2 configuration with better IFE and seats any time over the A350XWB!

Curious to experience the product next week, some teething problems were expected after the delay but they have plenty of time to fix things before the first LH flight.

Yes I agree, teething problems for such brandnew aircraft types are normal. The bad reviews I read here so far are exactly why these short haul (European) flights are planned, to get these problems out of the way (at least for the biggest part) before the aircraft go on long haul operations. Over time these Finnair A350's will be excellent aircraft I'm sure.

I share the joy of all those proud that the new Airbus A350 has arrived in the Finnair´s fleet, with this picture
of the latest delivered Airbus A350-941, MSN 018, reg. OH-LWA, powered by twin . Trent XWB-84, three-shaft turbofans, each 374,54 kN - 84.200 lb s.t., landing for the first time at HEL airport …

Teething problems are fine, I didn't mind the not working IFE, I'm sure they will fix it. Bad seats are not teething problems though, neither is a non tilting IFE, that's just bad design. I love the aircraft, it's quiet, has beautiful big windows, good air quality, spacious and it's a pleasure to look at, but the seats just don't cut it for me, fine on a 3 hour flight, not for anything much longer. But then again, I'm one of the people that can't afford to pay a premium for something better so I'd probably still fly it longhaul and make do with a pillow or two.

I agree with your conclusion, but some of the negative aspects mentioned here seem to be design issues related to choices that AY and or Airbus made. Meaning: seats are a choice of the airline, though I do not know which suppliers and how many different types of seats are being offered by Airbus on the A350. And the IFE issues should have been resolved before delivery imho. These are the most frequent negative points being posted here, so I will just focus on that.

But again, in the end this will be a phenomenal aircraft for all airlines who will operate it.

Flight AY812 from BRU back to HEL left BRU at 12.23 local time, on FR24 as FIN16A

I would be interested to read/see anything from this first A350 service into BRU, so I hope someone was there with a camera!

True, the service will improve, the IFE updated etc.! BUT, I spoke on the flight to some managers of Airbus - AY decided to cut costs in all departments and you can see and feel it. The headrests in Economy Comfort are the cheapest on the market (you can only moce it up and down), nothing to compare with the flexible ones installed in today's A330's/A340's - like I said before, the movable PTV screen.
I think the A350 is an excellent aircraft, but AY's cost cutting measures are over the top. I flew this year on an A330 to JFK and the hard product was miles above the one installed in this A350(at least in Y)!

Yes, the seat issue indeed is something different. I was talking about the other discrepancies mentioned. I totally agree with the seat issue, that's a choice the airline made.

IFE regularly have issues after delivery so that's something airlines expect. I have read several times about IFE not working properly in brandnew aircraft in the early stages. When I flew the TP A343 when it was brandnew on a longhaul flight, we also didn't have IFE the entire flight because there were issues with the system.

Okay, hopefully AY will change this after reviewing the customer experiences on their A350's.

I find it really odd that an Airbus manager would comment their business relationship to Finnair in any way to an outsider (if you are implying that you got the information regarding AY decisions from Airbus managers).
