This is exactly what I was thinking. Since the late 90's its been a road to the boredom and lack of imagination. It all began with the eurowhite and since then almost every new livery is a disappointment, with some exceptions.

Less is less in this case I'm afraid.

It's terribly bland, yes it does look like CX, it's not a complete vomit-inducer like IB's riddance of the iconoc 'IB' logo, but bland and boring nonetheless. The A350 at least makes the AY livery good, I can only hope it enhances the CX look.

Bold and beautiful was clearly NOT the ethos, bland and dull apparently was.

Out of touch comes to mind.

ok....... so they kept the thick gray stripe that runs the length of the fuselage....... but got rid of the green one under the cockpit...... and made the tail all green....and put in that brush wing at the nose and tail...... looks like something that got thrown together in Photoshop.

If CX felt the need to economize, I'm glad they did it on their livery instead of their stellar customer service.

Of course...I didn't see the need for a new livery at all, so I assume money plays a part.

That's really strange. Cathay Pacific's Facebook page linked to it in a post about the new livery. The post is still up and still includes the link, though it's gone on Youtube.

The new corporate livery is clearly in line with the modern design philosophy which emphasises a lot on flatness. That said, I'm not so sure if a flat design works for a plane that is clearly so 3D. And the placement of the "CATHAY PACIFIC" title looks so wrong with the grey lines looking so empty right now.

Anyway there is a picture of the plane on twitter now! It just look hideous. I think the company should have just painted the entire aircraft white, add a mini brushstroke and large Cathay Pacific title above the front section windows and use a large green brushstroke on a white tail. At the very least, that will create a cleaner look that is far more modern and professional.

I agree. Perhaps they wanted a refresh that kept them "current" versus looking "dated"? That doesn't mean the old livery was bad or that this one is good, but if that's what their marketing team was going for, I can understand it.

I simply think that they have failed miserably.
Taken a unique livery and lost it's uniqueness so that it now looks like so many other colourschemes... all of which are underwhelming.
Maybe a rethink is taking place right now, but I doubt it.
It seems all current new colourschemes are either in the wavy lines camp (eg. EVA) or bland boring white camp (eg. CX, AY, JL, MU, IB). Only good old Etihad is bucking the trend!

I guess one question I have is don't airlines usually pass things like this by a focus group or something so that real people - perhaps frequent flyers - can give an honest, non-vested opinion on the change? It just seems odd that a company would roll something out without having a pretty good idea that it will be received well.

That's not necessarily directed at this change, but rather at airline livery updates/changes in general.

I don't think opinions on a.net - for or against - can be taken as representative of the flying public.

However they achieved it, put me very much in the "I like it" category, but I'm scarcely a representative passenger either.

Well after the failures of fixed back seats and coffin class business plus the recent J class amenity kits, I'm going with the focus group are loyal employees who will say yes to anything put in front of them by staff above them.

It's cheap and you're never wrong.

Actually this design looks really clean, modern and professional compared to the new corporate livery which looks cheap and hideous.

While I thought that was a typical euro white scheme it's actually much cleaner IMHO compared to the version that we see, the large brush wing tail I think looks really bold.

After looking more closely I'm starting to think it's a budget problem, it'll be very easy to modify the current scheme by just stripping and painting the blue strip on the forward fuselage to remove the old titles etc then paint new titles over the current white above the window line and add the forward brush wing, finally repaint the tail. It may not even require a full strip and paint.

I Like it. It's really just a tweak of the current (old?) livery.

The current scheme was starting to date slightly, what this design does is flatten and clean it up a bit. It now looks very 2015, not 1995.

I agree. It looks like they took the old and gave it a fresh lift to bring it line with the current times. It still maintains the heritage of the old livery quite well.

Looks like the 747F fleet is up for most of the change.

The "grey"* band on the 777 allowed the Cathay Pacific to be placed in the white above it.

Not really possible on the 747 currently, looks like Cathay Pacific will stay where it is and the grey band will move down on the jumbo.

* Isn't it blue?

Sorry but stop being so negative. Change is good! Change is always going to happen! I love the Euro white and the less is more approach! It looks clean, sleek and modern. Cathay have done a fantastic job in modernising their livery while keeping the most important bits, namely the colour (in certain areas) and logo both of which the traveling public recognise which is extremely important!. Look at Qantas, Finnair, British Airways, Delta & Airfrance to see a base BRIGHT white fuselage with bold inputs of colour really work.

I have to say I like it. I'm glad they didn't go for an all white fuselage and I think they change they made is good.

Kind of sad that we won't get to see the current livery on the A350, but hey ho, at least we can compare liveries on the A330 and 777. Presumably the passenger 744s won't see it at all, but the freighters will.

I look forward to seeing the A330 and 777 in the new liveries soon.

Incidentally, what are CX's plans for its 772 fleet? They are coming up to 20 yrs old now (and obviously, 'HNL over 20, being the first). Since the A330 can do pretty much anything the 772 can do, only more efficiently, I wonder is the clock already running on this fleet? (I'm in no hurry to see them go; my first 777 flight was on 'HNC, from SEL to TPE and HKG - Kai Tak. Happy memories!)

...was meant to convey it as a general question, not anything directly related to this rollout. It's more of a general curiosity based on how poorly some of these changes are received by employees and fans. Of course, the general public is very different.

I have to say that I like it. Its simple, very Hong Kong (the brush mark is traditional Chinese art at its most basic), and keeps the green of Cathay Pacific over the decades.

I'm happy that it is not a white fuselage.

FYI The existing fleet will be repainted with the new livery as part of normal maintenance schedules during the next five years.

The first new series of aircraft to launch with the livery design will be the A350 in February 2016.

CX tried to sell them but no one want to pay the price they asked for,
that's why those 772 were the last to receive cabin renovation.

Nowadays all 772 have the latest regional cabin so I believe
they will fly for a few more years for CX untill they are being retired.

P.S. HNL will be return to Boeing after the retirement
