Irish 18/15: It Just Keeps Getting Better!

Wed Oct 14, 2015 4:06 pm

We saw some significant developments in our last thread, such as:

- The announcement that Cityjet will be taking on 15 (possibly up to 25, ultimately) Sukhoi Superjets. Assuming the unlikelihood of the Air Corps adopting the Su-30 as its new PC-9 replacement, it might well be the first and only time we have Sukhoi jets flying with an Irish flag.
- New EI short haul routes coming next Summer
- Two NEW A330-300s next year,
- Ryanair and Norwegian working on interlining
- Traffic keeps building and building at DUB; waiting for the announcement for the second runway soon
- New national infrastructure projects include direct rail line to DUB (at last!)

The positive traffic trend seems to be continuing and hopefully, we'll see the 25m mark reached by year end. We await, imminently (and with baited breath) the announcement of EI's new t/a routes, expected within the week. LAX seems to be a dead cert, but what will the other ones be? Even those which aren't picked this year should get a look in further down the line. BDL seems to be a late favourite, though MIA seems to have dropped down the list. We'll find out shortly!

Anyway, enjoy and partake in the discussions!

Here's the link to 17/15, for anyone who wants to refer back: Irish 17/15: The Final Quarter (by kaitak Sep 28 2015 in Civil Aviation)

Flew BA DUB-LHR-JFK . The Dove livery was on duty. Lots of passengers connecting from DUB to USA routes.
First time on a B744 for ages. There is still something special about it .

Pilot was from Ireland too Joe Daly. Lots of info from the flight deck which is always welcome.

I envy you OA260! You always seem to be flying somewhere! Lol

I can definitely see LAX happening. However MIA seems to be cropping up quite a bit in the last few days.

Regarding the 2 new A333's I was pretty shocked at this! Does anyone have a estimate time for delivery?

I could see SFO being up gauged to a A333. Crew Rest permitting.

If I were to be cynical, i'd say the "leaking" of LAX and BDL was designed to extract better terms out of another potential city, but then i've a dirty mind, so I'm surely wrong..... lol

Looking at June 2016 fares from Memphis and it's so much cheaper to fly to Dublin and spend a day or two and jump over to London than flying directly to London. Appears we may bookend our 3 week trip to Europe in Ireland which is fine by me.

Someone elsewhere guessed late Summer 2016, as in August/September delivery.

Europe isn't complete without dynamic, hedonistic Dublin and the spectacular beauty of the West, North and South coasts. You won't be disappointed.

Please disregard if this has been discussed already..

Why would BDL be a realistic option? With BOS less than 2 hours away and JFK close by, there can't possibly be profit to be made at BDL, right?

BDL once had an AMS route - and there are some business links between Hartford and Ireland. I think it's less about DUB and more about the range of European connections on offer. It's a perfect market to test if small US cities via Dublin to Europe can work. And with no problem filling up JFK and BOS, why not offer an alternative?

Plus, the $5 million subsidy from Hartford will surely help.....

It has been discussed, but by the same token, it wouldn't hurt being discussed again. The proof in the pudding will be in the eating, so to speak. Profit will indeed be difficult, hence BDL have set up that $5,000,000 fund to dampen EI's losses.

EDIT: Damn, Shamrock604 beat me to it (and was more thorough in the process).

That makes a bit more sense. Thanks guys, I appreciate the explanation. I also suppose that with preclearance, it makes the arrival into BDL a non-factor in terms of passenger experience.

It's great as a test market. EI/IAG would be foolish not to try this experiment.

Two separate investigations are being carried out after a passenger fell while disembarking from a plane at Dublin Airport.
The woman had arrived on an Aer Lingus Regional flight from Manchester on September 30 when the incident occurred.

Stobart Air, which operates the Aer Lingus Regional franchise, has confirmed the incident took place and that the airline is cooperating with an official investigation. The airline is also investigating the matter.

Hi everyone, I'm flying BA to/from LHR/LCY-DUB next week, does anyone know if the EI lounge still stocks Cara magazines like the old one used to? It's always a good read and I'd love to pop in and grab one, staff were always accommodating in the past.

Does anyone think it likely UA will increase their presence in DUB with EI joining OneWorld and inevitably forging closer ties with AA & dropping the UA codeshare? While during the height of the summer UA have 4 flights daily to DUB, in the deep winter this drops to 1 and while in the past they could fall back on EI codeshares from UA strongholds of ORD & SFO plus the EI codeshares via LHR, these will most likely be a thing of the past. Personally I could see UA launching ORD permanently, though I'm not sure how the 752 would get on against winter headwinds. Thoughts?

752 would have next to no issues with winds to ORD, AA never had.

Would be nice to see UA expand, would love to see IAH and for them to get into Texes ahead of EI and it would be a route EI would never go for because of DFW and AA.

Nice analysis by Routes Online on the potential DUB-BDL route. They say an announcement could be as early as next week.

Aer Lingus livery tram in Amsterdam.

GVB - Siemens Combino (13G/C1), 2092 (Aer Lingus), tram 4, Frederiksplein (Amsterdam)async src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js" charset="utf-8">>

Not often we see this level of advertising outside Ireland from Aer Lingus, maybe in anticipation of Ryanair's arrival?

Speaking of Ryanair, seems they've followed Aer Lingus' footsteps and started charging for advanced check in. It used to be free 30 days in advance but now they ask you pre-book a seat before you can check in.

Look's really well, you would never see such advertising in Ireland, they had a little inside Luas at one stage but that's it.

Great to see it.

I was in London this morning and notice EI are advertising on radio and having a right dig at STN and FR and promoting LHR and themselves.

It has been that way for the guts of a year now.

7 days free check in, 30 days paid.
Let's fly! Unless it's on a CRJ 200, then I'll stay down here.

I've seen very few, if any complaints communicated to them via their social media accounts. I think late August is when it started to die down so either regular passengers have simply become used to the lack of catering and given up complaining or there's actually been an improvement!

It can be hard to judge, marketing campaigns come in waves and in a few weeks there could be a three week burst of advertising but I'd doubt it in New York to be honest. The cost of advertising in NYC is notoriously high and it's not exactly a new market for Aer Lingus, there also wasn't much of a local ground campaign when SFO or IAD were launched yet they've both got off to great starts so whatever their approach to marketing in the US is, it must be working or isn't currently necessary.

Seems the backlash is over with but whether or not that's an indication of an actual improvement I'm not sure.

Well like any business social media is great for highlighting your product and interacting with your audience but when things go wrong it can do alot of PR damage.

The Belfast Telegraph reports that on Monday a new route from Belfast City to Brussels will be announced. If true one assumes it will be on the Avro, or Flybe leased Dash 8.

Whilst Brussels Airlines offers some good fares from it's existing network I wonder how sustainable a route like this would be? Great for anyone who wants to visit Belgium, and for those connecting, but the airline isn't as well known, nor does it have the networks of nearby giants KLM, AF, Lufthansa etc.

The news source, and indeed whispers inside the airport itself have all mentioned Brussels Airlines, but it's not impossible that it could be Ryanair.

Speaking of KLM, I wonder how they got on with their Fokker 70s at BHD since starting earlier this year?

It will be interesting to see the impact, if any, on EI's interline agreement with KL via AMS once EI rejoins OneWorld and enters the BA/AA transatlantic joint venture.

One of the flight numbers recently loaded by EI is the flight pair EI144/145 - the numbers formerly used for LAX.

I guess LAX is pretty much a certainty, will be interesting to see if they either take a chance and go for BDL or decide to add a flight to someplace less risky. An announcement is expected to be made this coming Wednesday, the 21st.

Apparently the DUB-BDL flight numbers will be EI133/EI132, last used on the DUB-SNN-BOS run in 2010.

It would probably stay, I imagine. It was there when EI were in oneworld previously wasn't it? Either way, the oneworld alliance doesn't prevent carriers from having relationships with airlines outside of the alliance.

AFAIK IAG stated that all pre-existing codeshare and interlining agreements were to remain intact. AMS is a particularly interesting one though since FR are beginning DUB-AMS on October 27th. A few weeks back I booked a mid-week trip with a few mates to AMS during mid-Jan and there were 4 daily flights to choose from, all at €40 return. This will surely have an impact on EI, who have had the route to themselves for years.

Boston incident 17 October.

EI-135 arrived Boston at 1320 local time. Aircraft was 757-200 EI-LBS. Upon arrival at stand at Terminal E aircraft was struck by the air bridge. Damage was thought to be minor but after a 30 minutes delay the plane was moved to another stand where the passengers were allowed to deplane.

Problems continued once passengers left the plane as 135 delay was compounded by EI-137 arrival with a full complement of passengers from a A330-300.

Both full plane loads were directed to the Terminal E baggage carousel #1 located in outer lobby. Another twenty minute delay and when luggage began to arrive it was from 137 only.

Aer lingus staff then directed flight 135's passengers to carousel #3 to get thier luggage. This meant leaving the lobby and going back into the main part of the terminal where there was no sign of luggage. After another twenty minutes Are Lingus staff then told the passengers to return back to where they had just come from carousel #1 out in the lobby where luggage was eventually delivered.

Am not aware if LBS was able to operate flight 134.

Gold Circle to be replaced with a new programme using Avios as its currency over the coming weeks.

http://m.independent.ie/business/iri...yer-gold-circle-club-34118164.html

Not quite sure about the name though. It's a little too short and simple, and to the ear ("Air Club"), it sounds too generic.

Travel Extra are reporting that EI will announce LAX and BDL on Wednesday. Both will be 6 weekly.

They are also reporting that the 2 new A333 will arrive next autumn and that Miami could be announced at a later date with Dallas likely planned for 2017.

Does this mean Miami could be announced in December/January ? If this is the cause I say it is probably due to availability of aircraft.

I guess it could be a lease in or could we see another agreement with Air Contractors operating something like a 767, which are in plentiful supply on the second hand market? Interesting times!

Not quite sure about the name though. It's a little too short and simple, and to the ear ("Air Club"), it sounds too generic.

Disappointed in the name choice but obviously they're going for an 'Aer' theme with 'Aer Space' announced in the summer and now 'Aer Club' on the way but as you say, it's generic sounding. I like the consistency they're going for though, hopefully the branding is similar to reflect this.

Sadly, I think Gold Circle was long dead, the name and brand was irrelevant to the modern day Aer Lingus. It could have stayed but when you think about it, it was equally generic and didn't actually have anything in common with the overall Aer Lingus image.

What matters most is the quality of the product, very much looking forward to seeing what's on offer!

They are also reporting that the 2 new A333 will arrive next autumn and that Miami could be announced at a later date with Dallas likely planned for 2017.

Does this mean Miami could be announced in December/January ? If this is the cause I say it is probably due to availability of aircraft.

I doubt if they would want to launch three routes in one year (though they did once before, when Open Skies was launched - and just before the crash)

Gold Circle to be replaced with a new programme using Avios as its currency over the coming weeks.

I agree. I'm glad they're using Avios. Gold Circle needed to go; it's just a joke and if anything it's a drawback, not a plus for EI and if your FFP reaches that stage, then it has to go. I don't care if they call it Basil or Humpty Dumpty, as long as it does what a modern FFP should.

If they are launching BDL, they'll need a "new" 757 - any word of where they might source that. I read somewhere (possibly here!) that one of the ET frames was a possibility?

If they are getting new A330s, then they won't be available until the Autumn, so they will need to lease in capacity in the meantime; the new birds won't be available for the launch.

2016 looks like being a very good year at DUB ...

Am not aware if LBS was able to operate flight 134.

No, last night's flight was cancelled.

Sabena flew BFS-BRU for a while, shortly before they went bankrupt.

Quoting EIRules (Reply 31):
Would FR operate it?

As they don't fly any other routes out of BHD or BFS it would be unlikely.

The 4th 757 will be arriving to Air contractors in the next month or two not sure which airline it operated for previously but it wasn't Finnair. Plan is 2 based in SNN and 2 in DUB.

It doesn't explicitly say they'll be using Avios, however it can definitely be inferred that it will be from the article.

I did have a laugh at "one of the country's best-loved loyalty schemes" - ha!

Aer Club. Meh. However, as everyone says, it all depends on what it ends up being once it's launched.

If it is Avios, you can generally transfer your points around between BA, IB, Avios.com and presumably EI, so that could work out really nicely!

Does another know any information bout the refitting of J in the B757? Is it to be done over the Winter months?

You would expect it to be done over the winter, but I've not heard anything definite.
I do enjoy a spot of flying, especially when it's not in economy!
