NE Airlines At Chicago

I just got off departedflights.com and looked a Northeast Airlines timetable from 1969 and it shows they
operated into Midway and not Ohare.I never was aware of that.By 1972 when Northeast merged with Delta
were they still at MDW or did Northeast move to Ohare by then,

NE did operate into MDW. Their gate was down at the end of the A concourse in the 1968 remodeled building on the east side of the concourse. I don't remember ever seeing NE at ORD. If they were there I never saw them.

This was in part due to the 1965-1967 renovation at MDW and Mayor Richard J. Daley trying to encourage use of MDW over ORD because ORD had become a victim of its own success. Daley wanted the airlines to move some of their flights back from ORD to MDW, and the introduction of the 727, DC-9, and 737 made jets able to use MDW. Ironically, part of the reason for the airlines' move to ORD was because first-generation four-engine jets - 707/720s, DC-8s, and CV-880/990s - couldn't land at MDW. However, UA CEO Pat Patterson said on the day before UA consolidated at ORD, UA would someday return to MDW.

True to Pat's word, UA was the first to add a token presence at MDW, in 1965 with the 727. By the time the renovation was done, both NE and DL set up MDW ops, and AA did as well. All of the airlines lost money at MDW, and when the Arab oil embargo hit, everyone but DL left. It wasn't until Midway Airlines started up in 1978 followed by WN's arrival in 1985 that MDW flights could make a profit in the shadow of ORD... a process that culminated in the WN hub of today.

I remember first seeing one of their planes taxi to the gate. It was a DC9-30 type and the plane was perfectly clean. That Yellowbird livery was quite striking and stood out among the other aircraft.

I do remember the flight was a milk run with several stops along the way, but terminated in BVT. BTW, Mohawk also flew to MDW about the same time and their gate was right across from NE's.

Those weren't the only airlines to go to MDW. Southern flew out of the B concourse (DC9's) and Frontier flew out of the C concourse (727's & 737's) along with NW(727s). There was also Eastern and Piedmont too. (A concourse). This was around 1971 or so. Braniff and North Central had ticket counter space, but they never went back to MDW and the counter space was empty with just the airline names over it.

I do remember UA arguing with Daley about using MDW. They argued that a lot of their passengers don't terminate in Chicago, but connect there to other flights. And having to serve the city with two airports for this service was just not practical. They argued that eventually a passenger would fly into ORD to connect to a flight leaving MDW. And who wants to do that? Eventually they left and Midway airlines stepped in and took over the space that UA used.

What happened to the other airlines MDW service is beyond my scope.
