Flown On Crashed Planes?

Sun Oct 18, 2015 9:59 am

Hi everyone,

Like many enthusiasts I log every single flight I'm on. Airframe, registration, route, seat etc - everything is documented. It's made the part of my job that I love the most even more interesting, but I caught myself thinking why I'm doing this. Every now and then I board aircraft I know I've flown before, perhaps with good memories, and it adds to the experience, but on a darker side I'm also doing this in case there should be an incident/accident with an aircraft I've flown. Chances are small, but it does happen.

For instance - have any of you ever been on a plane that's been damaged or crashed? Perhaps on the missing 9M-MRO, ill-fated 9M-MRD, or any others? And if so, what were your thoughts when you learned of it?

My thoughts were with the nice guy who invited me for my flight.

I don't see how that explains why, really.

This question's been asked many, many times before. Perhaps you can find a different angle - has anyone ever flown with a crew that was involved in an accident?

While this video is not mine, this guy flew with the Captain of MH17 in February of last year - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JiO0EGaG9RA

I was on Asiana HL7742, OZ214 ICN-SFO--three months before it crashed. When the crash announcement happened, somehow I knew it was the same plane I had been on.

None are technically hull losses but still potentially interesting..

I flew a DH3 Otter Float in Canada that had previously crashed on the water and been repaired.

Likewise I flew on ET-AOP the 787 which had the fire in LHR and had to be dismantled and rebuilt.

I'm aware of 4 aircraft that I have flown in that I know have subsequently crashed:

I flew many times in, and skydived out of, Skyvan G-OVAN which crashed on landing in Empuriabrava, Spain, while trying to avoid a parachutist. The pilot, Chris Meacock, who I knew very well, was killed.
http://www.baaa-acro.com/1993/archiv...-variant-in-ampuriabrava-1-killed/

I flew in, and skydived out of, Twin Otter N141PV which crashed immediately after takeoff at Perris Valley, California due to fuel contamination and pilot error. 16 people were killed, including a number of people I had been skydiving out of that aircraft with, just the previous week.
http://aviation-safety.net/database/record.php?id=19920422-1

I did one skydive out of DC3 N8056, just the day before I saw it crash at Zephryhills, Florida (it's not me, honest). Fortunately, no fatalities or serious injuries this time.
http://aviation-safety.net/database/record.php?id=19930420-0

I have flown at least twice on the BA 777 G-YMMM that crashed at Heathrow.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_Airways_Flight_38

And it probably doesn't count but I have also flown on the Virgin A340 G-VSKY that crashed at Heathrow - but only later, after it had been repaired. Though I did know the Captain of the crash flight, Tim Barnby, who used to live just down the road, and often flew the jump-ship at my local skydiving centre in his spare time.

I flew as a child on OE-LAV, and a few weeks before it crashed on EP-GPA, also on a private plane I made my PPL on, that crashed...

Luckily, I left a company i worked for, but the guy who took over crashed and died a few weeks after me leaving. Deffinitly would have been on the plane, since it was a long-planned business trip... Not a too nice thought, but ok, that's aviation life.

As far as I know I've never flown on a plane that has later crashed. I have, however, flown on the CR7 that had the infamous run-in with an A380 at JFK, after it was repaired and put back into service.

I would need to check the family albums to check this, but in the late-eighties (circa 1988) as a kid I had my first flight in a De Havilland Dragon Rapide, which pick us up from Shipdam Airfield in Nortfolk.

I remember that the plane crashed with one fatality a few years later. Based on a quick Google search, I believe it was G-AHGD. Here is the AAIB report: https://www.gov.uk/aaib-reports/de-h...-rapide-mk-iii-g-ahgd-30-june-1991

I was on G3's PR-GTD 2 weeks before its crash (G3 1907).

I was working for G3 at the time and they took my entire department on a quick CGH-GIG flight. 2 weeks later I was working the shift as we got info of the crash. It was the craziest work day of my life.

Not sure how much I want to get into this but, for the record, I have flown on the following planes that subsequently crashed.

D-AIPN (A320)

G-BNNL (737)

HB-IWF (MD-11)

PH-BTC (737)

HB-IXM (RJ-100)

Next week I'm flying on two A340-600s, three A320-200s, and an EMB195.

You may not want to sit next to me.

More seriously, that's five frames in nearly 1,000 flights. Was I just "lucky"?

While not having flown on this aircraft, my family and I almost booked ourselves on the ill-fated flight. We had planned on flying MIA-LAX-ICN-NRT and NRT-ICN-SFO-MIA on the return. Our original flight plans would have had us returning on OZ that same day as the crash, lucky enough we altered the trip just slightly, by only two days, and that made a world of difference. Ended up flying UA MIA-ORD-NRT and NRT-SEA-IAH-MIA.

I flew on Pan American "Maid of the Seas", N739PA a couple of years before it was blown up over Lockerbie.

I couldn't say which ones, but some of the former Air California/AirCal 732s were lost years after going to other operators, and I'd flown most of the fleet at some point.

And my mother flew AA BOS-SFO with the same 767 World Trade Center crew 3 days before 9/11. She had commented on how great they were.

Ah, the regular death wish thread. My brushes with fate:

G-BGYL B737-204, whisked me effortlessly from Luton to Geneva on a school ski trip in 1983. Nine years later, registered HP-1205CMP, it plunged mercilessly and fatally into the jungle of the Darien Gap, perhaps being the first 737 rudder hard over accident

V3-HFW, C208B, launched me off the gravel strip at Key Caulker and delivered me safely to Belize International on a hot morning in the summer of 2002. Some 30 months later, it splashed into the same shallow waters, over which it has safely guided me.

D-CXXX, C47, in Sept 2008 flew me in and out of Tempelhof before this magnificent airport finally closed its doors. Just under two years later, departing Schönefeld, it suffered an engine failure and force landed into a field.

Plus, plenty of spam cans.

Quoting PM (Reply 21):

PM, can you also avoid BA747's please over the next month or so, as want to sleep peacefully on my flights down to Southern Africa!

Not strictly on a plane that crashed, but several years ago I flew an EI A330 JFK-SNN, the flight at the gate next to us was Egyptair 990. Eerily enough, my car park sticker where I work was number 990 at one point.

I also flew out of JFK with TWA a few days before flight 800.

Another one I can think of is that I flew several times on EI-ORD which was an A330. While it didn't crash, it hit turbulence enroute to ORD of all places and severe damage was done to the elevators. I believe it ended up being written off.

That's all I can think of, thier might be some that I don't know about. I'd love to know.

I regularly flew a Centrair 101 Pegasus that had earlier been in a mid-air collision with another sailplane (a Kestrel) on final, which caused a loss of control and a crash. Other than repeated problems with the gear downlock, and some odd looking fiberglass repairs visible inside the cockpit, the aircraft was fine, although I was surprised that it was repaired with the amount of damage sustained. The fellow flying it survived, but was very seriously injured. The other aircraft was significantly damaged but at least managed to get on the ground in a basically upright attitude, and the pilot was less severely injured.

In 1977 I flew on ZK-NZL, which was to become N136AA which crashed on takeoff at Dallas in 1988.

On the 1977 flight our family car (a Ford Cortina Station Wagon) accompanied us on the flight, which caused a delay due to loading issues.

I have about 500 hours in a Falcon that crashed in the late 90's, about 5 years before I flew it! It was a really good airplane, they put a new wing and gear on it.

I flew on a lot of TK 738's prior to TC-JGE going down at AMS in 2009, there's a good chance I flew on it as they didn't have such a large fleet back then. No record though unfortunately - I only started keeping them more recently.

I flew MKE-ATW on N100ME just two days before it crashed on takeoff from MKE as YX105 to ATL. I had flown ATW-MKE-BOS and BOS-MKE-ATW. It was my first time flying on YX. When my parents picked me up at the airport, I told them that after my experiences (hard landings and compressor stalls), it wouldn't surprise me if YX had an accident. Two days later, that plane crashed!

I wonder if you sat in one of the seats that the one of the hijackers sat in since you were in Business? Of course many people sat in those seats over the years.

That's the thing about these threads, obviously until a plane crashes there is nothing significant about it, it's just "another plane". Sadly, though I hate to say it, but there's planes flying around right now that may be involved in awful crashes in the future.

Although I haven't yet flown on a subsequently-crashed plane, I did find one person's online flight logs from 1977-1999, which contains flights on several crashed planes:

http://homepage1.nifty.com/kawato/airliner/airlog.html

This particular individual flew on the following planes:

HL7406 (Flew on October 12, 1978; Crashed on November 29, 1987)
HL7442 (Flew on October 12, 1978; Crashed on September 1, 1983)

PH-BUF B747 KLM 25-11-1976 JFK-AMS / was my first KLM B747 ride. (First 747 ride was on TWA: LHR-LAX)

PH-BUF crashed/colided on 27-3-1977 with Pan Am N736PA. N736PA was the first B747 that ever visited AMS in 1970 and therefore also the first B747 that I ever saw.

Other planes that I know.
- I also flew with the United B767 that hit WTC from ORD-LAX
- SU-AYH: it did not crash but was w/o after being hi-jacked

RIP

Quoting simfanatic (Reply 22):
Flew on D-AIPX while it was still with LH on a TXL-FRA run.

I sat in every jump seat on that aircraft as I worked several trips on it! I fondly remember my D-AIPX flights as it was named after my hometown of Mannheim when it was still with Lufthansa.

One of the most vivid and nicest memories: flying with the "Mannheim" over Mannheim on a FRA-MXP flight. Mannheim is so close to FRA (which basically serves the Mannheim/Heidelberg area as well, with MHG only offering service to TXL and HAM) that flights departing runway 18 West to the south fly over Mannheim only a few minutes later. It was a beautiful, sunny day, not a single cloud and I could even see my house!

I've also been on DE's D-ABUZ the 767 that collided with broadcasting masts after take-off from PMV as well as DL's N803DE, the MD-11 that skidded off the runway in NRT(?) several times.

Also a very good friend of mine (started flying for LH as a FA in early 1974) worked on both the Boeing 747 "Hessen" D-ABYB that crashed in NBO on November 20, 1974, and the Boeing 737 "Landshut" D-ABCE before and after the 1977 hijacking.

Best regards

It wouldn't surprise me if I flew on the CO 735 that exited the runway on T/O in DEN a couple times.

I flew on D-AIPX. I don't remember the specific routing, but vividly remember flying on her.
