RE: Flown On Crashed Planes?

Mon Oct 19, 2015 4:46 am

I have, to my knowledge, flown two planes which subsequently crashed.

One, a Cessna 182, was written-off after a hard landing which caused damage too severe for repair to be done.

The other was a Debonair, sweet bird, in which I flew my son and myself a week prior to its tragic end, a weather-related crash into a mountaintop in which four souls perished. My flight remains the plane's last recorded IFR flight on Flightaware, very chilling still.

As for airliners, I have never tracked which ones I flew on.

I've flown on the DL MD88 that had the engine compressor issue in PNS that killed a child. That was a actually DL's last maineline fatality.

I flew on C9-EMC just before it crashed. Actually LAM kept on having in their magazine a photo of the wing with the aircraft reg no 6 months after it had crashed. They now removed the reg no.

I have had two such flights, way back in the 70"s I enjoyed my first trip on a UTA DC-10 but in my notes I was annoyed the aircraft carried a US registration rather than a French one, sadly this aircraft was the subject of a mid air bombing over Africa.
The second one was when I was bumped off an overbooked flight from KL to AMS which was to be on MH, I offered to fly with any carrier and ended up on all things a Yemenia A310 to Frankfurt and then a LH flight to AMS, The A310 was the one that went down near the Commores years later and as goulish as it sounds I knicked the Safety card and still have it today.
I remember when the DC-3 was new!

I'm not aware of having flown on any aircraft that later had notable incidents, though I can't say I've checked my log to see either.

Just to play along, the closest connection I have to this is a family friend who was flying DEN-ORD on UA232 and survived the crash landing of N1819U at SUX.

HEL-FRA for me, when she was still "Mannheim" with LH

Quoting L1011Lover (Reply 46):
I sat in every jump seat on that aircraft as I worked several trips on it! I fondly remember my D-AIPX flights as it was named after my hometown of Mannheim when it was still with Lufthansa.

One of the most vivid and nicest memories: flying with the "Mannheim" over Mannheim on a FRA-MXP flight.

I, too, lived in Mannheim when I flew on that bird, so seeing this:

http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c81/aloges/D-AIPX%20Mannheim.jpg

was quite a nice surprise. It was also the only time where a widely grinning F/A literally threw a bread roll to me - 'twas a pretty good pitch, too, to a window seat across two or three rows of seats.

There are at least four or five frames which I've flown on that have now crashed.

The SOL Saab in Argentina, a Merpati MA-60 in Indonesia, the Wind Rose An-24 in Ukraine, the Air Iceland Dash 8 and I'm sure there are another couple too.

A bunch of them were pretty soon after I'd flown on them - from a few months to a year.

I think this one's come up before, but frankly, I always find it fascinating.
I've so far been on one plane that had an accident later.
Was on VT-KAC (Kingfisher ATR72-500) on March 23rd, 2009. That frame experienced a runway excursion on November 10th the same year and was subsequently written off.
http://aviation-safety.net/database/record.php?id=20091110-0

To be honest, I'm glad this was an incident without fatalities; I'd probably find it odd (to say the least) to think that people died in an airplane I was on previously.

I used to visit my father regularly during the school holidays in Fort Lamy, Chad via Paris on UTA DC-8s and later DC-10s back in the late 1960s & early 1970s.

On one memorable trip, Fort Lamy to Paris on a UTA DC-8, we were diverted back to Bangui, CAR by weather. The aircraft was damaged by the manual stairs at the rear left door, which was lifted off it hinges and fell off!

We were overnighted at Bangui in a hotel.

On the direct flight back to Paris, I went to use the toilet and looked through a curtain, covering the rear left door. It appeared to be held in place by some wire and lengths of wood. We were at 35,000ft over the Sahara.

A UTA DC-10 was bombed on our regular route a few years later over Niger. There is an incredible monument visible from space in the desert to those who perished.

Odds are pretty good I flew on her in 1972. I did several inter island hops that December and their fleet wasn't that big. I was a TWA brat so odds are also good I flew on the plane that became flight 800 but I didn't start logging my flights until about 10 years ago. I don't recall flying a TWA 747 with the upper deck windows covered so only 3 showed though. That particular bird had the 10 window cutout design that became the new standard but had plugs on most of them to match the rest of the fleet. The crash knocked the window plugs out causing some to question whether the wreckage was the same plane. At any rate two planes I trained in had incidents. N10669 a Cessna 150 made an emergency landing in the desert that was believed to be the result of fuel exhaustion. Wind flipped the plane in such a way fuel leaked out of the overflow before it was recovered making it difficult to prove the tanks were below the usable level of fuel. I was told the renter was banned from renting from them ever again. It was repaired and put back into service and I trained in her. Another trainer I flew in later crashed. N19521 another 150 made an emergency landing on a busy street just after takeoff from FFZ when the engine lost power. It clipped a light pole damaging the plane beyond repair

I've bailed out of a pair of Skyvans (battery boiled over/leaked, and engine oil fire) and been in an Otter as part of a 9-ship formation over Eloy when a 'box has both its spinny things stop at about 15k. Nothing fatal though, fortunately, and all aircraft were back in service not too long afterwards.

Flying at the cruising altitude is (mostly) boring. I wish all flights were nothing but endless take offs and landings every 10 minutes or so.

In 1987, I flew on N516EA from ATL-LAS, operated by Eastern. In 1996, this 757 re registered as TC-GEN was operating Birgenair flight 301 which crashed shortly after taking off from Puerto Plata, DR.

In November 2008, I flew on Colgan Air's N200WQ from EWR-BWI. This DH8-400Q was the one which crashed on approach to BUF in February 2009.

I led a group travel event that included roundtrip airfare JFK - FRA on Pan American. I have a group shot of students standing in front of N739PA Clipper Maid of the Seas just before we boarded her for our return flight. IIRC I saw James Bond's Octopussy for the first time on that flight. I have to find that picture.....I want to say that it was in the spring of either 1987 or 1988.

Flew aboard all of Aero Virgin Island's DC-3's....they ended up getting destroyed during Hurricane Hugo.

Flew aboard N1819U in August of 1978 between DEN and ORD.

You are basically right! The grammar isn't 100% correct! But obviously EVERYBODY contributing to this thread - native English speakers, or those who use English as a foreign language - conceived what the thread opener was trying to say and what this thread is all about. So honestly - though you're right - I think it's splitting hairs! So I suggest we just let it go!

I flew LGW - PRG on Easyjet G-EZJU which was the aircraft later involved in the AIRES 8250 disaster.
In reverse, I have also been on BA 777 G-VIIK (LHR-ATL-LHR) which was repaired after the Denver fire in 2001.

Yes,I have flown on two planes (that I know of) that have subsequently crashed.

On 4th October 1996 I flew from Harbin to Beijing on a China Northern Airlines MD-82 (B-2138). On 7th May 2002 it crashed with an inflight fire near Dalian killing all 112 on board.

On 24th July 2006 I flew from Tashkent to Tehran on an Iran Air Boeing 727-200 (EP-IRP). On 9th January 2011 it crashed in bad weather near Urmieh (Iran) killing 77 of 105 on board.

That's two planes from a total of over 1,700 flights I have logged. I don't know if that is a lucky or an unlucky ratio.

I flew on N994Z with NW in 2003, which hit a snowplow at FSD in 1983 and received one of the wings from AC797 as a replacement. Also, I got a flight on N914DL in 2005 which hit approach lights at LGA in 1996 but was repaired. Lastly, I've had two flights on N909DL, which of course ran off the runway at LGA this past March.

Flown on the Bangkok Golf Cart (VH-OJH) several times. Pretty good repair job on it you wouldn't know it had been damaged.
