This sounds like the start of IAG using DUB as the TATL transfer point for routes they won't serve out of LHR for slot reasons! Exciting!

I think it's just LAX tmw (and BDL), but don't worry, MIA will appear at some stage in the future. Don't forget EI is still a relatively small player on t/a routes and getting sufficient capacity to mount a decent frequency next year would be difficult; they also want to increase SFO as well, which will require more capacity.

BDL is a great route for EI - first into a new city (though I know DL to AMS has happened previously), able to draw on pretty strong Irish cultural links in CT. Good luck to them; I think it has the potential to be a big success and let's hope the business community in CT supports it. DUB is an ideal hub to reach anywhere in Europe and (with the EY codeshare), to the ME and beyond.

Good thing about DUB is that there is customs preclearance there, so passengers can avoid the international arrivals building at BDL and simply arrive as domestic passengers, having already cleared customs in DUB. I think that was a big part of choosing Dublin, saves the state money from staffing the IAB at BDL.

Yep, exactly. All EI flights to the US use customs pre-clearance. It's an excellent facility to be able to use, saves all that waiting once you hit the US!

If I remember correctly, catering was an issue for the NW BDL-AMS and the meals were trucked in from BOS. I realize that there is less food these days but I'm curious as to how EI will handle this.

Congrats to BDL and LAX, from what I've heard they will add a third US destination on the east coast and from the article I read the two top choices where PHL and MIA, me being biased to the hometown airport, I hope PHL gets it.

It's a RETURN (3rd time?) to DUB-LAX, remember catching them at LAX in 2008. MIA has Oneworld written all over it, not so BDL......

Maybe if the flight is not RON at BDL they will bring the food with them on the DUB - BDL flight? Maybe there is a flight kitchen now.

To the poster above.....lots of insurance business, universities, and other companies requiring travel, all located between Hartford, Springfield, and New Haven. In addition, there is a large Irish population in Western Mass as well as chronic traffic issues on routes 90 and 95 leading to New York and Boston. Service should do well as long as the companies who have begged for transatlantic service actually use it.

Very cool! When I lived back in Hartford - the travel agencies I worked for did decent business on Aer Lingus out of Boston and NYC to Ireland. Nice to see them flying into Hartford!

Being roughly equidistant between Boston and NYC doesn't hurt. I recently was traveling to the Boston area and BDL was cheaper than both PVD and BOS.

Can someone confirm or debunk my understanding of the United-Aer Lingus Star Alliance relationship? If they hope to capture business travelers out of BDL, Aer Lingus will need to provide a decent mileage accrual on United. Based on my research, it doesn't seem you earn United PQM miles (Premier Qualifying Miles) at all on Aer Lingus. Further, it seems that for travel to Ireland, coach passengers earn at most 75% mileage credit, and for some fare classes, only 50% credit. I also can't find evidence of earning United miles beyond Ireland or the UK (and the UK earns 250 miles according to the chart I saw). Am I misunderstanding the relationship?

EDIT: Further checking reveals EI will join OneWorld with the IAG takeover. Probably too early to tell, but will the EI-AA relationship be as nicely integrated as AA-BA from an EQM and mileage perspective?

surely there has to be food service available? Some airports use local restaurants IIRC the skinny pancake an excellent restaurant does in the inflight catering for Deltas BTV-ATL first class. I would think they could find a restaurant or something to offer catering even at BDL. Cant see that being an impossible deal killer, the 757 doesnt have that many seats in first. Surely coach meal service there has to be someone to do catering easily to do sandwiches.

I also expect a summer seasonal to DFW will be in the cards for EI, or perhaps on an AA 763, or A332, once the JV is finalized.

Another B757 will operate BDL. LAX can be served with existing fleet if they scale back DUB-SFO to 5 weekly.
Anything after that will need another aircraft or cuts to current routes frequency

New England-Ireland in general is really easy to sell, especially in the Summer. With 752/A321 they could easily blanked all major NE airports besides BOS: BDL, PVD, BTV, MHT, PWM. The big question is whether they can maintain that in the off season.

It's also a shame that EI doesn't fly DUB-BLL. LEGO's US headquarters are in Enfield, CT, and I would but they'd get the lion's share of traffic if they could offer convenient access from Enfield to Billund for LEGO employees.

Great news!

I work for a college in the "Five Colleges" area north of Springfield, MA. Getting to Boston is misery on the roads these days, and BDL is the go-to airport for all of our domestic travel. There was a BDL-LHR rumor at one point, glad to see DUB happen. Having a TATL flight (ideally with decent connections on to London and German cities) is a great boon. EI seems the logical choice because of Dublin pre-clearance. The old terminal at BDL appears to be undergoing demolition.

I just hope the pricing isn't outrageous. The direct Asia flights from BOS are expensive enough that we still fly out of EWR or connect through YYZ when headed to the Far East.

According to the Press Conference, and Aer Lingus official said the prices will NOT be more than BOS. They specifically mentioned the knowledge corridor. The old terminal at BDL will be turned into a new rental car facility.

The IAB was opened in December 2002. Terminal B is the older terminal that has been closed for a few years and is currently being demolished.

Much is being made of the late-season start at BDL, but consider that the folks in Ireland love coming here to shop (Wrentham Outlets, et al). So while it might be the tail end of the summer-weather season, it's the start of the busy shopping season.

BDL is still a relatively low risk addition. I think they'll do ok there even in the off season. I suspect that there are a lot of people who will be very happy not to have to drive to either BOS or JFK.

It will have an impact, however the ET operation is a fuel/transit stop on ADD-DUB-LAX. They also operate 2 other fuel only stops at more or less the same time. Some mornings there can be 3x B787 in ET colours on the ramp at DUB (its usally a mix of B777 and B787)
