SAN Sues Over Tall Construction Cranes

Fri Oct 23, 2015 1:33 am

Apparently there's two more cranes than there's supposed to be and they're taller than they're supposed to be. That seems like a huge oversight on the part of the contractors responsible. How much risk do these cranes pose, especially since the airport had smaller ones on their property (and much closer to the runway) recently for the new rental car center?

well the building will be 389 ft tall, so a 450-475 foot crane should do.. but using 650 ft cranes seems excessive especially without lights or other aircraft warning devices.

I noticed that SAN does not seem to have any NOTAM's out for cranes, am I missing something? I know any crane within vicinity of the airport requires the FAA to do aeronautical study and contractor submit a 7460, and if approved NOTAM should be issued.

The MDA for the GPS approach and all the circling approaches has been raised by 200 feet to 880MSL.

But the LOC27 straight in minimums still has an MDA of 680MSL

Realistically, there is no loss of capability at the San Diego airport, airplanes have the same approach capability they had prior to the cranes- they will just be limited on approach selection in marginal weather.
