UAL System-Wide Data Outage?

Wed Oct 28, 2015 2:06 pm

Regarding UAL 647 operating GRR-DEN on Wednesday October 28th. I'm told that passengers are being informed by the Captain that the flight is delayed due to a "United Airlines System-Wide Data Outage." The aircraft has been pushed back and sitting in hardstand for over 30 minutes. Does anyone else have further information? Is this different then the system-wide computer outages experienced a few months ago?

UA647 was scheduled to depart 9:17am. It's in flight now.

I checked other flights scheduled to depart +/- 45 minutes of that flight. They're showing on time or early including UA589 which is also scheduled to depart at 9:17am.

If there were a systemwide anything happening, it should be showing up in other aircraft departing at about the same time.

There was, however, Air Force One activity at O'Hare this morning. GRR-ORD seems like a prime candidate of a route to hold at origin before ORD congestion and delays clear.

I wonder why the pilot didn't blame Obama? Maybe he votes Democratic! (one in a million)

I had originally planned to fly to SFO today, but decided to change my flight for next week. Looks like I made the right decision.

"I'm told that passengers are being informed by the Captain" is a couple hops in the game of telephone. Maybe he did blame presidential traffic.

Except this flight was not to ORD, it was to DEN.

They close down not just ground operations for specific times but sometimes certain sectors. This flight probably went through the same airspace as Air Force One and was delayed until after the President left.

Why weren't ORD flights delayed?

Are you saying there wasn't a ground stop for 30 minutes as the President departed? Looking at a scheduled departure time is not the same as when it actually departed. I see a block of aircraft that were scheduled to depart ORD around 8am leaving an hour later.

According to https://www.whitehouse.gov/blog

He was to leave about 935am (CT). UA does not appear to have taken any delays departing ORD at that time with most flights actually departing early.

All I'm saying is that if this flight was held on the ground for all that extra time (ended up being 1 hour 20 minutes delayed) just because of POTUS, there would be more apparent evidence across the system than just this.

It's possible the flight was in a direct path near where the President was flying, and was held at their destination until Obama got under way. If there was a system outage it would have made the news.

I think this has been debunked, no?

Why? There was no outage.

The decision to change flight dates(which I made last night)had nothing to do with the supposed outage(which of course didn't happen). But an interesting coincidence.

The Captain of 647 said, "the aircraft is fine, no problems and that the customer service computers are fine. It's the flight planning data system that is down system-wide."

So is that dispatch computers that he was referring to? I find it hard to believe now that there really was an outage since I can't find any delayed United flights around that time frame, outside of mechanical delays.

One last thing: The flight crew said they don't think it was affecting Express flights.

I was at work today and there was no system wide data outage or outage of any kind. Your specific flight experience issues receiving pertinent information the pilot needs to take off such as final weights, and takeoff data that comes from dispatch it was never system wide it was a computer issue with that specific aircraft and your specific flight.

Get the briefcase out again! You don't have this issue when the pilot carried paper.

Flew UA PHX-DEN-BOS starting around that time....both flights OT and no evidence of problems at DEN.

Not to give out any sensitive information but your post is completely inacurrate. A1 or any other VIP doesn't close down anything. Separation is adjusted very slightly and certain VIPs get a sterilized runway but that's it.

There might be a TFR (temporary flight restriction) during a VIP event on the ground but the VIP flights have almost no effect on other air operations.

Quoting RDH3E (Reply 9):
Why weren't ORD flights delayed?

Because VIP flights don't really effect the big airports. VIP haircuts are a different story.

ACARS was down for Mainline United - final weight and balance numbers were not being communicated from OPB/LP to the flights. Some flights had to have numbers read off by Dispatchers to the crews to get them going... I heard it was isolated, but no UAX flights were affected.

Since it was determined there was no 'system-wide Data Outage,' this thread is being archived.
