Quoting DolphinAir747 (Reply 1): Isn't there a historical Canadian leader or cultural figure who is more popular though? |
Quoting SpaceshipDC10 (Thread starter): Some people would like to rename the airport in honor of outgoing PM Stephen Harper. |
Quoting VS4ever (Reply 2): PA Announcement on the inaugral flight: Ladies and Gentlemen, please let us welcome you to Celine Dion International Airport the local time is X. Thank you for flying Air Canada.. |

Quoting DolphinAir747 (Reply 1): Though I guess since Pearson and Trudeau got their airports, what can you do. |
Quoting beechnut (Reply 7): Quoting DolphinAir747 (Reply 1): Though I guess since Pearson and Trudeau got their airports, what can you do. Yes but they both died before having airports named for them. Harper shouldn't get an airport named for him before he passes on, and given his relatively young age and apparent good health that could be a very long time. By then we'll have a better idea of his legacy as well. Right now he comes across as too divisive a figure except maybe in, well, Calgary... though the riding YYC is located in went Liberal in the election. |
Quoting VS4ever (Reply 2): Celine Dion International Airport |
Quoting yowza (Reply 3): Major infrastructure should only be named after people posthumously |
Quoting bristolflyer (Reply 9): |
Quoting Viscount724 (Reply 8): I don't like naming airports for politicians. Only results in cumbersome names that are seldom used in practice (JFK a rare exception). |
Quoting afcjets (Reply 12): Can someone please tell me why all major airports in Canada have to start with the letter Y? |
Quoting ltbewr (Reply 20): I agree that no airport should be named for living politician unless a connection to aircraft like Houston Intercontinental to include former US President George HW Bush, a person who served as a pilot in WWII and survived bring shot down. Sometimes past politicians turn out years later to have been crooks, racist, and so on so better not to use their names in connections with airports or other public facilities. |

Quoting MrChips (Reply 22): Or maybe the new international terminal. |
Quoting YLWbased (Reply 25): How about Calgary Justin Bieber International Airport? Anyone with me? |
Quoting YYZFAN (Reply 5): I agree with people above saying this should occur posthumously if it were to occur. Not to turn this into a political discussion, but Stephen Harper has been a politician in Calgary since the 90's. He is a very popular man in Alberta, particularly Calgary. He has done nearly 20 years of public service too. |
Quoting AWACSooner (Reply 30): 5. Don Cherry |
Quoting Aquila3 (Reply 27): So what about Wayne Douglas Gretzky International? Ok, another Ontarian, associated with Alberta you may say, but, let me tell you, of another League. |
Quoting skymiler (Reply 28): I vote for Ralph Klein International! |
Quoting Vio (Reply 29): I'm pretty sure they have a pub named after him at YYC |
Quoting afcjets (Reply 33): Shania Twain Airport |
