Petition To Rename YYC

Wed Oct 28, 2015 4:03 pm

Some people would like to rename the airport in honor of outgoing PM Stephen Harper. Me think it's too early as they should probably wait until his death and perhaps wait some time to have a better perspective on his legacy.

Meh. I never like naming airports for living people, or at least not for divisive politicians whose legacies are very unclear. Though I guess since Pearson and Trudeau got their airports, what can you do. Isn't there a historical Canadian leader or cultural figure who is more popular though?

PA Announcement on the inaugral flight: Ladies and Gentlemen, please let us welcome you to Celine Dion International Airport the local time is X. Thank you for flying Air Canada..

Or something like that...

This thread could be a long one with the different options. I would agree though, naming airports after living folks is not necessarily a good idea. What would have happened if Bill Cosby had gotten an airport named after him. An extreme example, i know, but...
That feeling when you sit at the end of a runway, brakes are released and the raw power takes over. Now that is a thing of beauty and it never gets old.

Major infrastructure should only be named after people posthumously. It's in poor taste otherwise. Needless to say this is going nowhere. I should point out that there are also petitions to name a prison and a garbage dump after him too...

I agree with people above saying this should occur posthumously if it were to occur. Not to turn this into a political discussion, but Stephen Harper has been a politician in Calgary since the 90's. He is a very popular man in Alberta, particularly Calgary. He has done nearly 20 years of public service too.

And just to add to those who are going to turn this into a Harper bashing....Trudeau and Harper both won their majorities with near identical portions of the popular vote (39.5%). So let's keep this discussion about naming airports, when it is appropriate, etc.

Yes but they both died before having airports named for them.

Harper shouldn't get an airport named for him before he passes on, and given his relatively young age and apparent good health that could be a very long time. By then we'll have a better idea of his legacy as well. Right now he comes across as too divisive a figure except maybe in, well, Calgary... though the riding YYC is located in went Liberal in the election.

I don't like naming airports for politicians. Only results in cumbersome names that are seldom used in practice (JFK a rare exception). But if it has to be done, at least wait until they're dead.

There was some talk of renaming YYC airport for longtime (1971-85) and very popular Alberta premier Peter Lougheed who died in 2010. If YYC has to be named for any Conservative politician, he deserves it much more than Harper. And Lougheed was born in Alberta unlike Harper who was born and raised in Toronto and didn't move to Alberta (and Edmonton initially, not Calgary) until after he'd finished high school.

I agree. One only has to look at James Armstrong Richardson International Airport (CYWG). I think it's more appropriate to name an airport after people who have contributed to the development and improvement of aviation (and aerospace). Bucharest Henri Coanda is a good example.

The airport codes are named after "weather codes". The Canadian "weather station" codes began with Y, hence

"YVR" = Y VancouveR
"YOW" = Y OttaWa

I think generally airports should just keep their city/town name. I liked YUL Dorval because its located in Dorval, and ironic that Trudeau was the new name considering how divisive he was in respect to Mirabel. Instead of JFK, Idlewild.. Politicians are by their nature divisive. Landing at Reagan National.. Or someday Obama Intl in Chicago... No thanks.

I live here and I would prefer Calgary International Airport. Naming a airport works when you have multiple airports in one city. Maybe, but only maybe after he passes, but not after a lost election.

I agree that no airport should be named for living politician unless a connection to aircraft like Houston Intercontinental to include former US President George HW Bush, a person who served as a pilot in WWII and survived bring shot down.
Sometimes past politicians turn out years later to have been crooks, racist, and so on so better not to use their names in connections with airports or other public facilities.

ANC airport, named for long-time Alaska senator Ted Stevens, was briefly named for a convicted felon when he was convicted of corruption charges in 2008. The indictment was later dismissed which wiped out the conviction after an investigation found evidence of misconduct by prosecutors.

He died in a DHC-3 Otter crash in Alaska in 2010.

Back in March 2014, when MAD was named after Adolfo Suárez, we had a very good and lively thread on the topic of renaming airports after people, especially when they have perfectly good place-names. Consensus was that the person should be dead.

YYC already has a name, before the Feds stripped the name it was called McCall Field in honour of WWI Air Ace Frederick McCall:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frederick_McCall

If YYC was to be renamed I would like to see the aviation connection kept and simply call it "Calgary McCall International".

I believe Nimoy was from the Boston area. The other Canadian Star Trek cast member was James Doohan, born in Vancouver, raised somewhere in Ontario. Unlike Shatner, Doohan actually flew for the Canadian military during WWII.

How about Christopher Plummer? Shatner first came to notice as an understudy to Plummer, when Plummer became ill.

Harper will get his name at YYC in 30 or forty years after his demise. Count on it.
