You are forgiven :bouncy: And congrats on 3000 posts on Airliners.net!

Sad too see PH-BFS now sniffing the Qantas fleet in the desert. Must be a surreal sight for her, from her hometown of Amsterdam where everything is flat and green to the desert with sand and mountains.

All four engines of PH-BFS have already been removed by a KLM maintenance team from SFO and will be sent to the new owners.

That was quick! Are the "new owners" -- other planes in KLM team, or are these real new owners -- other companies, standing by to receive these engines and adopt them in their fleets/pools?

Are there any guesses or actual knowledge as to who bought PH-BHY?

A few years ago 3 Combis were still flying in the Middle East I recall. Kuwait Air's 9K-ADE and Dubai Air Wings's A6-COM and A6-DAW

Could PH-BHY fill a replacement need there?

PH-BFS was ‘bought’ and flown to MHV. After the flight, many commented it was her final landing. I actually connected through Instagram with someone who’s going to be working on scrapping her :( With these ‘sold to a customer’ announcements, if they fly to MHV (specifically), it’s unlikely they’ll come back. Places like VCV are a ‘transition point,’ where the aircraft switches from one operator to another. I would think that if someone such as a VIP bought the aircraft, it would be ferried to SBD or BSL for outfitting/paint, not to MHV. I could be wrong, but that’s my 2 cents. The only aircraft I’ve seen at MHV that fly again are tankers, military aircraft, and the aircraft based there. 99.99% of all else stays at MHV for good.

The still flying combi aircraft (PH-BFT, -BFV and -BFW) might have a little more life in them.
The original plan was to fly them for 6-8 weeks in coöperation with Philips and the Dutch Government; this would mean this would be the last week.
However; KLM CEO Pieter Elbers has said they might fly for a little longer; since there's not only demand for medical cargo but also other types of cargo.

Currently stored at AMS. According to this, PH-BFY will fly to MHV in June 2020. I'm betting for parts but you never know.

As the youngest Combi in KLM's fleet were the hours on the frame excessive for PH-BFY or is there lots left for a VIP operator to work with on re-use?

I think any 747 going for storage nowadays will be sold for spare parts. There just isn't any other use for 747's these days, especially with the 777-300ER becoming available for a passenger to freighter conversion soon. The days of the 747 cargo conversions are really over I'm afraid. Finding a new home as passenger role has been over for the 747 since the last few years already with many 777-300ER's coming available in the second hand market (like the many EK 77W's).

Sorry to re-ask but does anyone have the hours and cycles for PH-BFY? I am curious how the youngest Combi was used in the KLM fleet. Also do the cycle and hours figures allow one to conclude that parting out is only reason someone bought the plane? Also when did PH=BFY have its last big maintenance?

TIA to all the knowledgeables on this fine site.

PH-BFY was in her final years configured and utilized as full-pax with seats in the aft main deck. It would be more valuable for disassembly and sold for parts.

PH-BFY was indeed delivered as a combi but in her life at KLM was reconfigured once or twice. Together with -BFH she was one of the 'oddballs' of 747's at KLM since these 2 were slightly different in a way that they could be reconfigured between combi and full-pax. (think like difference in wiring etc.)
That was a deliberate decision from KLM when they ordered them.
I don't know how often they were reconfigured but I believe only a couple of times at most. PH-BFY's last conversion was in early 2012 when she went from combi to full-pax.

PH-BFY's last major maintenance was in late 2019 when she underwent a C-check in Jakarta. She had about 89.000 flying hours and 10.230 cycles at that time.

So sad to see these beauties grounded and headed for the junkyard. Sorry if this was already covered, I haven't made it through all the pages in this thread, but why does KLM management bother to paint out the KLM name and logos if it's just going to be scrapped? Is that considered bad luck or something? It's not like you can't tell whose plane it was, given the brilliant blue fuselage. I noticed that the boneyard in MHV has Thai, Lufthansa and others abandoned where they didn't go to the trouble to paint over the logos.

It's more of a legal issue. I believe Dutch law mandates all aircraft owners to have an identifcation mark to whom it belongs to. Removal often means the aircraft has already switched ownership. The new owner than finally chooses if the branding/sigining stays or goes

I visited MHV today (for the arrival of Northrop Grumman L1011 N140SC), and I saw that ex KLM 747-400M PH-BFS has been moved to the 'mass storage' area, and now is devoid of her registration. If you have visited MHV before, she is parked between the Southern Air 747 and the all white 747SP.

According to gabik001 on the Chicago Aviation Thread, there's a rumor that the next KLM 747-400 ferrying AMS-ORD before retirement will be on Monday, June 15. However, this Dutch forum states that PH-BFY will ferry AMS-ORD-MHV on Monday, June 22. Currently unknown if these are two different frames or the same frame with two different dates.

If there was a sale of PH-BFY before going off to MHV would the new owner license the aircraft before ferrying? What parts would they be aiming at getting. Or do they buy with a plan to salvage everything and presumably recoup purchase price plus a margin? IOW does the purchaser save KLM the salvage headache?

The new owner is a scrapper so the airplane will be registered PH-BFY until it arrives at Mojave and then it will get de-registered for part out and scrap. Generally they plan to salvage everything and get as much money out of it as possible. Parts to other 747 operators, interiors to other airlines, movie studios, collectors etc.

Probably indeed the latter. It's still costing them money, the longer KL owns these birds. KL is probably doing first-come-first-serve on any third party buyer willing to ship them out of the country as soon as possible.

The Combi 747 was a marvelous airliner. I was told that in its prime (and perhaps as a 742 Combi) it had high margin ops for Air Canada. Not sure about AC's 744M which is still flying as part of Dubai Air Wing. Maybe there is a distant chance that down the road there will be an efficiency improvement large enough that the 747 will get a new Combi design again. Not as a 748 but maybe as a 749 or 74X? Something so comforting to see the hump and 4 holes.

I'm quite sure Air Canada only had 747-200 Combi's, but no 744M. And I'm more than sure that we won't see a new 748-based Combi. As mentioned before a lot of 777's are flooding the second hand market which isn't such an iconic aircarft as the 747 but much more efficient to operate.

AC had 3 744 Combis, the only 3 744s AC had until the CP merger when it took on the 4 CP 744s for a few years before the whole fleet was sold. Certainly we won't see anymore Combi aircraft, definatly not a 747.

The combi design was only convenient back in the 80s when airlines needed the 747 for its range, since it was one of the only aircraft with true long haul capabilities, and were unable to fill them up with passengers, thus allowing cargo to cover the lost revenue by flying such a huge aircraft half empty. Today the combi design is pointless in most cases, the huge belly capacity of standard passenger aircraft like the 777 or A350 can do the job just as well or better in most occasions (except for horses or other oversized special cargo).

Not to mention that the whole combi concept has been crippled and restricted by new regulations after the SAA295 accident, killing one of the main advantage of the combi: its flexibility. Heavy modifications needed, non movable bulkhead, as well as additional fire fighting equipment, high restrictions on what can be carried on the main deck... too much hassle, for little to no advantage (and safety wise still not the greatest in case of a fire).

Oh, and then, the pax 747 is dead, so this possibility is even more remote.

Airworthiness certfication expiry dates of the remaining KL 74E's.
Registry - Airw_expiry
PH-BFT - 28-Jul-20
PH-BFV - 06-Nov-20
PH-BFW - 12-Jan-21

(Source: https://english.ilent.nl/themes/a/aviation)

Should the current cargo-runs continue in the forseeable future, than PH-BFW will likely be the last man standing...

It's always possible to request an extension of the expiry date and issue an amended and/or temporally airworthiness certificate.

"The Netherlands may grant an exemption from the substantive requirements laid down in the Basic Regulation and its implementing rules in the event of urgent unforseeable circumstances or urgent operational needs, provided the level of safety is not adversely affected. An exemption article 71.1 Basic Regulation may only be granted to Aircraft registered in the Netherlands"

Do we know the hours/cycles on the KLM combis still in service? Have to wonder if someone else would pick them up should KLM let them go in this cargo bonanza period.

IF they have life left in them, they would actually be an easier and cheaper conversion to all cargo for IAI. Someone like Atlas or another operator could get three well maintained 747s that can be converted to all cargo for less than usual. This would follow the last conversions done for Asiana.

Today the combi design is pointless in most cases, the huge belly capacity of standard passenger aircraft like the 777 or A350 can do the job just as well or better in most occasions (except for horses or other oversized special cargo).

The B777 and A350 may have a huge belly capacity, but IIRC the 747Combi has about 1,4 times the volume compared to a 77W.

Looks like KLM 747-400M PH-BFY is still on track for retirement AMS-ORD-MHV on June 29. Does anyone know if this is the last KLM 747 that will head to the states, or if there are rumors/plans to bring PH-BFL/N and/or eventually PH-BFT/V/W when they end cargo ops?

Besides MHV, also TEV, GBA or EHTW might do some hardware shopping at KL.

That's what I was thinking. I was surprised when I saw that PH-BFS and BFY would be flying state-side, given that the more recent retirements stayed in Europe. Sad to see the KLM 747s that got me into aviation going away....

Not sure how those dismantler businesses exactly acquire them, my guess is they were probably the highest bidder

The KLM 744combi operation with destination PEK (via ICN) will stop and will be replaced with a 5 flights/week schedule to HKG. Preliminary planning is for 2 months.
Normal general cargo will be transported.
The AMS-PVG operation will be continued.

Will those HkG flights also use the passenger cabins for freight?

MHV will be the (final) destination, not VCV.
