When Will Heathrow Terminal 1 Be Demolished?

Wed Nov 04, 2015 9:54 am

I was flying from the brilliant new Terminal 2 building at LHR last week on my way to work and visit friends and family in Norway. Standing in the impressive outdoor atrium I looked wistfully towards Terminal 1, still standing there but empty: no cars, no buses, no taxis and no people to be seen anywhere near.

The only reminences of Terminal 1 still used are two gates at the old Europier that connect to Terminal 2 via a walkway. Imagine this, like the rest of T1 will be demolished soon to make way for the further expansion of T2 so that it becomes as large as Terminal 5. However, for the time being, the building still stands there, fully intact but with not a single plane to be seen.

My question is, when will Terminal 1 be demolished? Does anyone know?

Will they renumber the terminals when they only have 2, 4 & 5 left?

Not soon enough - the Aer Lingus part of that is so old and depressing, it's the worst waiting area I've ever encountered

Had a guided tour of Terminal 2 in May, and the guide said that the demolishion had been postponed, but that it would be domlished to give room to the expansion of Terminal 2.

Sadly he did not have an exact date.

T2 uses the T1 baggage system (thus the 'arm' visible between the two, so that issue needs to be resolved before it can be demolished.

They need to put a baggage system in T2 first.... At present , all outbound bags head off to the original T1 baggage area, which is still in use.

Better question is when will Terminal 3 be demolished and integrated into Terminal 5 ?

Here in Berlin we have a working baggage system in some sort of building which looks like an airport, but is used as the worlds first money-eating machine. Perhaps they could move that system over to London... ^^

They are now in T2. T1 is completely empty, the last remaining occupants were British Airways I believe, who have just had a reshuffle of flights between terminals 3 & 5.

It seems a bit silly to design a terminal without its own baggage system. Was this a money saving ploy?

That's correct, though they stopped using T1 in June at which point it closed, and the "reshuffle" was actually moving a number of long-haul flights from T5 to T3

The plan was always that there would be one large terminal using the sites of T1 and old T2. The current T2 is just the first stage of that, so technically T2 does have its own baggage system....
Don't forget this airport is not funded from the public sector, so the terminal expansion project is dependant on money market conditions.

Never! I believe the plan is for T3 flights to be moved to an expanded T2

And LHR charge more than enough in fees to make up for these costs - and with the airport at capacity they can charge a hefty premium over other UK carriers.

I remember the T1 building well. It had a spectators gallery viewing area on the roof terrace outdoors. I went there many a Sunday afternoon as a student in the 90's to sit and watch the heavies come in, it had a direct view of 27L the BA hangers and T4 area. There was a small shop/cafe and a relatively small room with glass walls and a screen showing arrival and departure information. That room was always full of guys who had probably been there all day with binoculars, radio receivers to listen in on ATC transmissions, scribbling on notepads and, welll, a fog of stale cigarette smoke. Rain or shine, there were always a hardcore band of plane spotters there.
Sadly, after 9/11 the viewing area was closed due to security reasons and merely parked somewhere in the periphery of LHR watching planes land could get you suspicious looks from police.

You're thinking of the old T2 rooftop. The T1 viewing area closed in the 1980s.

T1 never had a viewing area, it was located on the Queens building and connected to the T2 roof

The T2 baggage system has the arrival system and links from T2 check-in to the T1 departure system. Sortation, make-up, transfer, storage, reflight and the link to T4 are all within the T1 building. T2A and T2B have safeguarded basement for a "full" future baggage system. But the required tunnel connection also require the removal of Europier and and extension of the T2A building (Phase 2 of T2A). It was not possible to build the deeper tunnel basements within the T2A footprint due tot he Piccadilly Line running below. This is also the reason why there is no people mover yet.
So to answer the question. I guess T1 will be removed when the second Phase of T2A comes and this point in time is subject to Heathrow having a 3rd runway (incl T6) or not. I am pretty sure 3rd runway and T6 would become priority.

Meanwhile The T1 building will be removed as much as possible without compromising the baggage system. Space will be used for improving (for A380 movements) or opening taxiways. I think I also read an advertising for a 4 start hotel within the Central Terminal Area ..... the only space I can see for that is the closed T1 short stay carpark.

You're correct, it was T2, foggy memory.

Luckily, not immediately after, which allowed me to visit it twice in 2002 (BTW, of what I remember, security was not even the official reason). I remember Concorde take off, silencing everything around...

One reason I heard was the lack of disabled access, thus being against disability rules

I doubt it. Would mean a lot of expense to change signs etc. for no benefits. And people identify with the terminal numbers. Would be confusing to renumber them.

YYZ only has T1 and T3 since T2 was closed and demolished some years ago and it seems to work fine..

Is it really necessary to still have the pedestrian crossing lights flashing? The place closed in June.

You mean the UK domestic and Ireland flights pier? That was actually one of youngest parts of T1.
