Considering DL has cut SJC-MSP and SJC-ATL to once a day, maybe they should think about adding frequencies to MSP and ATL, resuming the old NW SJC-DTW, and adding SJC-JFK before they add an oddball non-hub route like SJC-LAS.

On the contrary, if you can make a P2P route work, why instead force flights through hubs?
Plus, how would SJC-MSP/ATL/DTW/JFK-LAS help out someone wanting to just do SJC-LAS?

Not that someone would want to but I bet DL would sell a SJC-LAS-MSP,ATL,JFK ticket if you really wanted one.
One mile of highway gets you one mile, one mile of runway gets you anywhere.

It's not a bad place to host a focus city / hub at all. In Sept 2015, out of all major airports in the US, LAS clocked in the 5th highest completion rate (or 5th lowest cancellation rate) plus the 8th highest on-time rate.

SJC-MSP has two flights most days except in the lowest points of the year. I agree an additional ATL rotation would be nice (not to mention the existing one is only 5x weekly), but SJC-LAS is really a separate issue.

I would imagine much of it is related to these being E175's. Probably not the right aircraft for those cities.

Maybe they're testing the waters to see if they should move their Transpac hub/Asian gateway from SEA to SJC to replicate UA's hub up north off the 101 . . .

First, SJC-MSP is served nonstop twice a day on most days, normally on MD-90 equipment.
Second, perhaps DL knows more about the revenue and profitability of routes in their network than anyone who posts in this forum.

That would be awesome (but wishful thinking). The thought of never having to connect in LAX or SEA going transpac out of LAS, would be a dream, if we could connect in SJC.

Always love when someone comes through with this comment. You mean the people responsible for profitability and planning of the airline know more than we do??? Nooooo. But at the same time, anything is worth questioning and talking about, that's why this is a forum. And it's not like DL has launched routes that haven't worked before because they're perfect, right?
In other news Boeing knows more about the 737 replacement than we do, Airbus knows more about the alleged A380NEO than we do, and FI knows more about hauling fish than we do.

Could this have been a preemptive strike by Delta, beating AS into the market? Seeing that AS has been adding more p2p service to/from California, perhaps the folks at Delta thought they'd get into SJC-LAS before Alaska did.

DL is bringing back a noon departure SJC-ATL, morning departure ATL-SJC. This is during the high peak summer months. Thus making it 2 n/s flights daily

I'm speaking purely from operational PoV. Of course the yields are bottom barrel for many markets, but SJC-LAS doesn't fare too poorly.
In all of 2014, WN had a median one-way fare of ~$161, which isn't bad at all for a flight less than 400mi.

It's a little bit of an interesting add. Delta did try sna-las and that didn't seem to work. I think it's similar situation secondary airport closer to a premium consumer from a Cali airport to Vegas. Iirc loads were just miserable on the wekdays. Any las to cali flight is pacler on thur, fri, sunday. Las is a very weekend oriented market from Cali. I guess we will see, maybe they also have a plane that would just be sitting around and this is a good chance to try something .

It does't appear to be on the schedule yet (I tried a few bookings in June and didn't see it). They've done it the past couple of years - add it to the schedule, but it never ended up operating.
On an unrelated note - DL is sending the Falcons to SJC on a 744 tonite.

DL has been known for throwing odd-ball routes since they exited CH11 and decided to grow. Remember LAX-TIJ? Granted, thats not a P2P route but still experimental. Also routes like PIT/PHL-CDG and all the TATL operation out of EWR, and all the other non-hub focus city routes they do from LHR/AMS/CDG. This one is just being experimented on a much smaller scale. None of their new routes suprise me anymore, they're totally unpredictable on what they're going to do next.

I can see the NIMBY's and the San Jose city council blowing a collective head gasket over that idea
IIRC, while the dot.com bust scaled back the original expansion plans for SJC (they originally wanted a $3 billion, 40 gate central terminal), the city council also weighed in in an effort to keep the airport from getting too big. I don't remember the exact details (I want to say that a gate limit was put in place by city ordinance, but my memory may be failing me), but the impression I've always had is that the city government has a love/hate relationship with the airport. A shame, really; SJC was my hometown airport growing up, and I always love to see it get bigger and add service, even though I'm far closer to SFO now...
