What do you mean "only"? They have the same configuration on the A380, which is significantly wider.

Standard.

The -ULR is postulated to have 170 seats or less, in order to help make the distance.
This config has more than that in just Y.

That's surprisingly heavy on J class. I would expected a row less (38 J) with another 20 EY instead

Why? Were you expecting 7 across?

9 abreast will be the standard in economy, so the logical step up to premium Y would be 8. 7 across would be a little generous.

I would assume the word "only" implies he thought there would be more in a row, not less. Maybe he was expecting 9, just like in Y.

Only 253 seats due to a heavy premium configuration. This explains why SQ found the 787-9 too small.

I have flown regularly on Cathay Y+, EVA Y+ and China Airlines Y+
I have yet to fly on SQ Y+ but just looking at that design, it reminds me of similiar design as CI 777 Y+ seat, are they from the same manufacturer? BTW, the best seat so far is from CX, very roomy and comfortable. EVA being the few first to came out with Y+ was behind the curve with Y+seat till their new 777 plane. It was such a huge improvement on all aspect on BR Y+ that I suddenly feel attracted to fly them more!

Just to share some thoughts, sorry for being off the subject.

Probably yes, there are few manufacturers. Many airlines have minor cosmetic changes, the underlying structure that carries the passenger for crash-worthiness is often the same.

A believe the same seat, or very similar is actually sold as "first class" domestically in the USA.

Since 8 used to be Airbus' standard in Y in its previous wide-bodies (except the A380), now that the A350 cabin is a foot wider, 8 across in Y+ should be nice to experience, wherever the additional space is used.

Y+ is on the upper deck, which isn't significantly wider. It is 30cm or so, but due to the curvature, you can't really use all that width (hence why a lot of window seats have some storage space next to them.

Anyway, no one should be surprised at 8-abreast. Y+ is generally 1-seat less per row than standard economy.

There are airlines who have Economy 'comfort'with just increased seat pitch (like KL) but there are also real 'plus' concepts with wider, far more comfortable seats which are a bit like business class of the past. SQ belongs to the latter.

SQ's A380 have 8 abreast Y , 2 less compared to standard Y. Width is 19,5", like in the 77W, so I guess they would be able to fit it in the A350 as well.

Therefore ordered the 787-10

It's interesting the A359 is indeed this premium heavy. The latest 77E with new Business class has 26 Business and 245 Economy seats, but the A359 compares with the 4 class 77W, only without First (4x First, 48x Business, 28x Y , 184x Y).

SQ along with EY are supposed to have some of their A359s delivered in a regional version with lower MTOW. Will they have a less premium heavy cabin on these?? Any chance SQ will go the way CX has with a regional business class seat?

SQ already has a regional J seat ... it's just waaay more recline than what CX has. CX's regional J feels like international Y+, while SQ's regional J is comparable with many angled flats out there.

But the Asian carriers really should figure out how to deal with that big waste of space. A few times I've flown intra-Asia J, the cabins are rarely more than 50% full, and sometimes, painfully empty.

Goes to show the efficiency of the A359XWB over the B77E where they need to fill the B77E for it to have a decent ROI.

I think SQ will also eventually convert a number of their A359 options to the A350J.

"Only?" It's 9-abreast in Y, so W should have fewer abreast. I'm surprised it's not 2-3-2.

Understand that SQ does not have a Y+ product; they have a premium-Y product. In Y+ the product is the same with just more leg room. In Premium-Y, the seats are wider and the overall product including catering is different. Premium Y in 2015 is similar to what J was in 1985.

I don't think SQ has a "regional" versus "medium haul" business class- they are one and the same for SQ. Rather I think it is a case of "medium haul/regional" business class and "we don't want to spend the money to refurbish these aircraft that are leaving the fleet soon anyways" business class. According to wikipedia (I know...) there are only 2 772s with the old non lie-flats + 3 772s that still have the Spacebed.

The future is here and airlines like SQ, NZ and ANA are the trailblazers. The real battle in the next decade will be defining what exactly this middle class tier looks like and what kind of yield these carriers can obtain by tweaking it between Econ+ or a "downsized" J. The NZ 2-3-2 in the 787, or ANA's 2-4-2 standard, this new 2-4-2 in SQ...which config and hard product will be the ultimate winner? I personally love it because for business long haul I'll always be up front, but traveling for pleasure I'll never pay $4-6K per seat...but I'd pay $1500-$2000 per for 10+ hours in that middle class vs. steerage. And I bet there are a lot of us out there.

Polot is quite right.. They only have 3 old 772s with their old J product, the Ultimo seats as they're called. They all should be out of the fleet within the first half of next year-

Otherwise, their current regional J which they use for the 30-minute shuttles to KUL to medium haul routes to the likes of Nagoya or Brisbane on their 330s and refurbished 777s is the one below. It is angled-flat and in 2-2-2 config so comparable to long haul J on many airlines (EK still uses a 2-3-2 configuration on their 77Ws)

Polot is quite right.. They only have 3 old 772s with their old J product, the Ultimo seats as they're called. They all should be out of the fleet within the first half of next year-

None of that changes the fact the product is still in service.

except SQ classifies flights up to 8 hours as regional
CX only classifies flights up to 5 hours as regional
so even India gets a long haul cabin...

Sq does have a regional product......from their website

"Other Fleet
We have conventional recliner seats on some of our Boeing 777-200 aircraft serving the short and medium haul routes. The ample leg room and wide fabric cushion seats will provide you with a comfortable journey."

Zeke, I agreed with you that the older business class seat on regional CX is very roomy and comfortable. The sofa style even not flat was comfortable enough for many of my short nap on intra-Asia fight. Now, the new refurbished regional business class seat was a shame. I happen to be on several of the regional flight with those seats installed. Aside from a good tray table there is nothing I can say good about it. May be a personal opinion but there is little to none storage space, the seat does not recline enough, and overall, space is tight. I really dislike it.

CX does not classify flights up to 5 hours as being regional, it considers flights within the region (i.e. Asia) as being regional. Regional flights get a mixture of regional and long haul hard product.

I would love to see where SQ say that flights up to 8 hours are called regional.

Fair enough, if you were to get the old regional business class, and compare it with the current seat there is a lot of improvements. It is not as roomy as the flat bed, 4 across vs 6 across, and the pitch is not the same. The aircraft are used for different roles.

Therefore ordered the 787-10

SIA evaluated the 787-9 against the A350-900 and found the former too small for long-haul routes.

The 787-10 will play a different role and will fly regional routes with high density cabins.

I'm not totally sure this was the case when the 787-9 was ordered by SQ. It was evaluated against the non-XWB A350 at the time, and SQ chose the 787-9. I remember the SQ CEO complained publicly about the A350 having the same fuselage width as the A330/A340, something like "why doesn't Airbus do a new wider fuselage now that they are designing a new aircraft?". Airbus launched the A350XWB not that much later, and SQ consequently ordered it. I believe only after this A350XWB order, SQ decided to use the 787-9 for medium haul and later transferred them to Scoot.

The 787-10 will be SQ's A333 replacement I believe.
